It's been in my amazon box for a while now...thanks for the recommendation! This is the latest and last in the series of Corelli's chamber works. It's hard to find enough superlatives to do justice to the playing and the sound.

I have 2 other versions...the Lipinksi Polski Radio live recording which is on Stereophile Records to die for List...and the siminov and Susan Gritton version with royal philharmonic. I much prefer both to the dawn ups haw which I also have from college and rarely play now. Ymmv. This evening's listening ...
Henryk Górecki: Symphony No. 3, Op. 36, "Symphony of Sorrowful Songs" ~ Dawn Upshaw (so); David Zinman / London Sinfonietta
This symphony has a vocal part in Polish in each of its three movements, song very will by Dawn Upshaw. The piece is critically acclaimed, I personally have to be in the mode. Tonight it seemed more like a baleful minimalist dirge than anything else, though I was coming around by the third movement. Sound quality on this Nonesuch recording was average.

It's hard to go wrong with BIS. On a rare occasion I think they place the mics a little too far away, but most of the time they produce very natural sounding recordings that are demonstration worthy.
A few other dependable labels include Pentatone, ARS Produktion, Challenge Classics, 2L, Linn, Arts Music, Caro Mitis, Oehms, Sono Luminus, Da Capo--all produce superb SACD recordings. This is a good source for new releases: One Bit Audio | Audiophile music releases SACD and beyond.
No, ARS Produktion, a German label:Good point and thanks for the link. I agree on Pentatone, 2L and Linn. I have some ARS as well...listening to some now I think...ARS Musica? Will look at the others as well.
This set arrived today-Wow! It doesn't seem to get much notice in the press, but it is superb. The Quartet plays with white-hot intensity or great beauty as the music requires, and with staggering precision. All that and superb sound...plus all six Quartets fit on two discs!
