Classical Music Only | What You're Listening to Now, Or Very Recently | Any Mediums :

Re: Classical Music Only | What You're Listening to Now, Or Very Recently | Any M...

Nice Mike. I just bought a collection of 50 new classical LP's for $250. I will try to take some pics and get them posted. Most are Deutsche Grammaphon.

That sounds like quite a find.

For my part I decided that deals on good, classical vinyl had become too far and few between. And since my own existing collection of LPs is very small, I gave up on vinyl altogether. My modest TT now resides on a basement shelf.

Fortunately digital sound is better than it used to be thanks to better recording methods and better playback equipment. Better still, the classical repertoire in digital format continues to expand despite the supposed demise of classical music in general.

I listened to a really wonderful piece this evening ...

Elliott Carter: Double Concerto for Harpsichord & Piano and Two Chamber Orchestras ~ P.Jacobs (h); G.Kalish (p); Contemporary Chamber Ensemble

This one's not as quiet as some but the playing is wonderful. Great dynamics on this mono.

Found Vol.3 in the stack so here goes. This one is starting out to be a very playful and enthusiastic ensemble while beautiful and gentle at the same time, just superb. A quiet groove too.

Just got this from Linn,

Mahler Symphony no 4. as chamber music, very well played,.
Sound is good, piano sound a little muffled, but good placement and dept.

It's a little hard to imagine Mahler's symphonies played by a chamber ensemble; I wonder if Mahler would have approved of the concept ... maybe not so much. Anyway, I'd like to hear it personally.

I have just a couple of Mahler's 4th performances: Abbado / Berlin Philharmonic and Solti / Chicago Symphony.

A Columbia six eye mono: Brahms Concerto in D Major Zino Francescatti Eugene Ormandy and PHO.

More beautiful music from the collection that keeps on giving....

Mike, have you had a chance to listen to any of these yet? Opinions? Gems?

Columbia Two Eye Mono: Gary Graffman Schumann Carnaval Symphonic Etudes

Anyone wanting to get into the mono records needs to listen to the Two Eye series from Columbia in general. They are silky smooth with a super quiet background. Some are more dynamic than others but that's no different than any other label.

This one is a little deep-set on the stage presence, but the solo piano playing by Graffman is outstanding. A good example of a mono record with a pinpoint deeper stage.

Re: Classical Music Only | What You're Listening to Now, Or Very Recently | Any M...

This is one of the first mono records that I cleaned, listened to and fell in love with and suddenly realized how good a mono recording could be.

On this dedicated mono cartridge it's breathtaking. The music is utterly fantastic with a very silent background.

Is it classical?

"Sometimes you find what you are not looking for and that is especially true for the music on this album. The music on After Silence crossed my path, by meeting people or visiting places, events taking place or just materializing in my mind, but the one unifying factor for all 11 compositions is that they appeared after a moment of silence. Silence is the most important part of my music making.
Silence is there, foregoing every first note I play.
Silence being the place for inspiration.
Silence which lets me start each piece of music as a child hearing it for the first time.
Silence keeping me from automatically following the beaten path."...... Andre Heuvelman

Blancanieves (2012)

Yes, it's a movie, yes it's on BD, yes it's a silent movie. Why I have I posted here?

Because the non-stop multi-ch classical soundtrack over the silent black & white movie is nothing short of spectacular!!!!!

You got the hybrid system. This movie will demonstrate how MUSICAL your mult-ch setup actually is. Must have reference.

The movie....A twist on the Snow White fairy tale that is set in 1920s Seville and centered on a female bullfighter.

The music....Pablo Berger & The Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra. There is a CD & digital soundtrack also. Go for the BluRay if you can do it nicely.
