John, I never say things like that but I envy your SACD Hybrid Multichannel Classical music collection.
I would be proud to be your son ... :)

Yesterday evening: a high resolution, 24 bit, 96 kbps download of this recording; a fine performance. Sound quality is very transparent and airy though slightly bright.

Gustav Mahler: Symphony No. 5 in C sharp minor ~ Michael Tilson Thomas / San Francisco Symphony

This evening's listening ...

Henryk Górecki: Symphony No. 3, Op. 36, "Symphony of Sorrowful Songs" ~ Dawn Upshaw (so); David Zinman / London Sinfonietta

This symphony has a vocal part in Polish in each of its three movements, song very will by Dawn Upshaw. The piece is critically acclaimed, I personally have to be in the mode. Tonight it seemed more like a baleful minimalist dirge than anything else, though I was coming around by the third movement. Sound quality on this Nonesuch recording was average.

Leos Janáček: String Quartet No. "Kreutzer Sonata" ~ Skampa Sting Quartet

The Janáček are considered among the great quartets of that repertoire, and among my (admittedly many) favorite quartets. The performance is great and the SQ of this Supraphon recording is a bit above average.

Franz Joseph Haydn: String Quartet Op. 76, No. 4, "Sunrise" ~ Orlando Quartet

Another famous quartet of the repertoire -- Haydn is credited with the invention of the string quartet form. The performance is fine on this Philips recording; the SQ is average or a bit better.

This is the latest and last in the series of Corelli's chamber works. It's hard to find enough superlatives to do justice to the playing and the sound.

Beautiful London FFRR throughout with an exceptionally low noise floor:

I have 2 other versions...the Lipinksi Polski Radio live recording which is on Stereophile Records to die for List...and the siminov and Susan Gritton version with royal philharmonic. I much prefer both to the dawn ups haw which I also have from college and rarely play now. Ymmv.

It's hard to go wrong with BIS. On a rare occasion I think they place the mics a little too far away, but most of the time they produce very natural sounding recordings that are demonstration worthy.

Agree. Generally, I have had good experiences with Hyperion, BIS, Alia Vox, Channel Classics...no doubt a few others I have missed for the moment.

A few other dependable labels include Pentatone, ARS Produktion, Challenge Classics, 2L, Linn, Arts Music, Caro Mitis, Oehms, Sono Luminus, Da Capo--all produce superb SACD recordings. This is a good source for new releases: http://onebitaudio.com/

Good point and thanks for the link. I agree on Pentatone, 2L and Linn. I have some ARS as well...listening to some now I think...ARS Musica? Will look at the others as well.

This set arrived today-Wow! It doesn't seem to get much notice in the press, but it is superb. The Quartet plays with white-hot intensity or great beauty as the music requires, and with staggering precision. All that and superb sound...plus all six Quartets fit on two discs!

This is good to know! The Bartok quartets are among my favorites. I have versions by Juilliard, Emerson, and Takacs.
