We heard two of greatest performers last week. (The Medium was LIVE!) On Thursday we heard Gil Shaham playing the complete solo Bach Sonatas and Partitas, to a backdrop of inventive videos. Hearing a complete concert of Bach on the solo violin is almost a mystical experience, especially in the hands and fingers of someone like Shaham.

Then on Sunday we heard Murray Perahia. The second half of the program was the great Hammerklavier Sonata by Beethoven. We were lucky to hear him last year also (in London). IMHO, one of the world's great pianists. He is currently editing a complete score of the Beethoven Piano Sonatas. Hopefully it will lead to his first complete recording. He appears to be completely recovered from thumb injury which has caused major problems since 1990.

Last night I listened for while to a multichannel SACD on my home theater system. Despite the components in my HT are much inferior to my main stereo system, the experience was well worthwhile. The atmospheric character of theses pieces, I suppose, contributes to a positive multichannel experience.

Performances are by Yannick Nézet-Séguin with L'Orchestre Métropolitain du Grand Montréal on the Atma Classique label.

= Debussy: La mer

= Britten: Four Sea Interludes, Op. 33a (from Peter Grimes)

= Pierre Mercure: Kaléidoscope

= Debussy: Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune

I listened, (as I do once in a long while), to John Adam's Violin Concerto last night.

Maybe I'm a philistine but it really isn't among my favorite violin concertos, and I'm not just saying this because of Adams' contemporary style, (e.g. I like Elliott Carter's Violin Concerto better).

You aren't alone, as most of his music leaves me cold, and also like you, it isn't the modernity, as I thoroughly enjoy violin concertos by Penderecki, Schnittke, Gubaidulina. I just think that his music doesn't have a lot to say.

You aren't alone {not caring for John Adam's Violin Concerto}, as most of his music leaves me cold, and also like you, it isn't the modernity, as I thoroughly enjoy violin concertos by Penderecki, Schnittke, Gubaidulina. I just think that his music doesn't have a lot to say.

Thanks for the tips! I have only one of Penderecki's violin concertos and none of Schnittke's, (though I have his viola concerto). I have nothing of Gubaidulina's so will have to seek out some of her works.
