Lumin Network Audiophile Music Player

Nick, if you can find a DAC with a BNC connection (like the EAR DACute 4), you can run BNC out of the Lumin and into the DAC of your choice. BNC or HDMI are the two digital out connections.

I am jotting down some notes now for my review. Setup is a major PITA - but aside from that, once it is setup, you are laughing on easy street. Once setup, it takes less maintenance than a DAC/PC.

I'm playing with (and testing) the CD 16/44.1 rip upscaling to DSD functionality right now. Impressive (and preferred) on about 80% of the songs I've tried so far. A feature of the Lumin not mentioned often.

I believe Bryston (and should be others) that have Coax to BNC (either way I believe) adaptors, so that might offer some flexibility in choosing the DAC. FWIW, I believe the Rowland Aeries Dac is an BNC capable Dac (their preferred input).

I agree -- BNC to RCA adapters are easy to get.

Nick....you may find that you like the on-board DAC of the Lumin obviating the need for a separate DAC if you decide to try it out. Mike seems to like what he's hearing as compared to his CAPS 3.0/Meitner MA-1 combo.

I think Sanjay nailed it. If you are a resolution freak, go with a DAC like the Meitner or DAC2X. If you want something that sounds more analog, more liquid, then the Lumin is the ticket.

I listened for over 10 hours today. Can't remember the last time I listened to 10 hours of digital. I listened a lot yesterday too. More tomorrow.

Given your love for vinyl, this is very telling! Thanks for sharing, Mike!

I hope to post my review later today or tomorrow. Still listening and comparing.

HELP : no WIRED access to my network from my listening place !

Well, Since I have no WIRED access to my network from my listening place (in other words, my wife will not allow for an Ethernet cable across the living-room :-), I was very happy to hear that the LUMIN now allow for playing directly from a USB Drive/stick. Finally... I don't need ethernet access to a NAS !

But ...

- If the LUMIN cannot be connected to my Network, how can I use an Ipad to control the Server and select the files to be played ? Does Lumin support Wifi ?
- Is the playback from USB Drive/stick as good as when streaming the NAS through Ethernet ?

Aside question: will I have the same problem (no possibility to select music with the iPAD) with ALL Music server if I can't connect the Music Server to an Ethernet Cable ?

then... what is the solution for me ?

Thanks in advance

Bertrand

I also don't have wired access near my equipment racks. As a temporary (I hope) measure I used a powerline Ethernet solution. I have an Ethernet switch connected to an Ethernet powerline plug and both my Synology NAS and the Lumin are connected to this switch. The iPad is connected via Wifi to the router. Logically, the switch (and hence the Lumin and the NAS) and the iPad are connected to the router. I have also tried playing from a usb stick plugged to one of the usb ports of the Lumin and it worked fine.

Welcome to the forum CharlesL!

Thank you for joining and happy new year!

You can do the same as Charles with a powerline adapter, use a wireless gaming adapter, or old wireless router flashed with custom firmware and use it as an access point.
