JOB 225 2-channel Power Amplifier ... update ...

I just have the standard version. Hard to imagine what the options would bring to the table. It is a great match with the Job.

I'm glad you are happy with the Wyred 4 Sound preamp. I'm still thinking about one but I have a friend building a custom passive. I will get more details and let the Job 225 lovers know about it. It's probably still a few weeks away from reality but from what I understand it should be nice. The STP-SE is always on my mind.

I self-debated the audiophile mantra, "in for a penny, in for a pound" but, in the end stuck to my original thesis, "simple and lower cost" then, I bought the Wyred 4 Sound Standard STP-SE without the mods. The mods look like major enhancements but the extra $2K was over my planned budget. Listen to me, holding the line on practicality. After 25 years in this hobby, I may have finally graduated from the extravagant buying stage! The impulse buying stage is still firmly in place :D

The biggest challenge was not buying the mPre with DAC. The volume control is based on the STP design and its about half price but I like the external DAC option as well as the Oppo 105 that I have uses the same ESS 9018 chip. Also, I didn't want to double-down on a chip that I like but don't love.

I thought about their trial program but, in the end, I expect it to work out. Thanks for your inputs. I think this is going to be a great system. I'll comment on the assembled system when they arrive. Everything is in bound (except cables and Oppo).

Congratulations on the STP-SE! Can't wait for your opinion. I think you will be amazed at the sound quality when it all comes together.

I've heard the Oppo, STP-SE and Job 225 pairing - they sound great together. The only thing is at low volumes, despite what the reviews state, there is a lack of drive - but this is likely highly dependent on the source output levels and impedance.

Hello all, just finished the thread from the beginning. Whew! My Job should be here next week, Hi to Tom, Norman, and all of the other AC members I recognized here.

Welcome the the forum playntheblues!

Thank you for joining.

Welcome MG8.

I own the CJ ET3SE and just ordered a Job 225 last Saturday. I will let you know how the combination turns out, but I would be a bit wary of noise as the CJ is a high gain design to begin with. Paired with the CJ Classic 60 SE (0.7V required for full power), it can be a struggle to find tubes that are quiet enough. My speakers are 90db sensitivity, and you may be able to get away with it using a lower sensitivity speaker.

I am not in favour of using the 32 bit volume control on the Sabre. My main DAC, the Calyx Femto offers the same feature, and yes, you will not lose any bits (provided your attenuation is not too aggressive), but I found the sound to be a bit dry and clinical. When the Job arrives, I will also try them with an old passive pre (based on an Alps Black Beauty pot) I have lying around, as well as driven directly by a BMC Pure Audio DAC or Antelope Zodiac Gold, both of which have good volume control sections.

Hi Watchdog

I'm afraid the CJ ET3SE is too much gain (25db), I have the same problem with my MOTIF (By CJ 25 db gain too) I can entering volume up to 10 hours after it's too loud. The best it's no more than 6db...

I listen to the first 30% of the volume control normally so I hope your comment does not ring true for my system. In other systems, I have noted the speaker configuration has a lot to do with the "come alive" threshold. This is an interesting system and I am outside of my typical "box" but it "feels" right based on what I have read and discussed with others. I am risk seeker :-)

Thanks Yami, I thought so too and went with the W4S STP-SE passive/active preamp. I tried to work some tube magic into the mix but thought the tube noise and the high output may be difficult to manage. I will have a tube project next. I have had some ARC gear but no CJ so I am trying to develop a CJ phono system.

The speakers I heard them on were 91dB sensitive... actually the same speakers I have.

Anyhow, only one way to find out is to try - and that's the fun part!

North Star a belated but sincere Thank you . Dallas Texas and name is Guy. :) This question is for anyone but I think Joe was the one switching out fuse's in his Job. What was the consensus as far as best fuse to use? Norman was recommending the Quantum fuses.
Thanks,
Guy

Hi Guy,

Either Audio Magic the super fuse (my choice) or the Quantum synergistic fuse.
