Did you ride today?

I got 30 miles in today. It was a beautiful sunny day with some fog rolling in off the lake earlier in the morning. When I left it was almost 70º and as I headed east, away from the lake it was close to 85º! I had to peel off my knee warmers and the cap from under my helmet to try and stay cool. Once I headed back to the west and came to within a half mile of the lake again it got down to 64º (I had to put my cap back on and roll down my long sleeves), the fog was just hanging in the air. It was like some crazy Jurassic Park setting. I was riding along an apple orchard and all the trees have their blossoms on them now. There was a flatbed truck parked by the side of the road with about twenty bee crates on it. There must have been thousands of bees flying around that orchard today pollinating the trees. It was very cool to see.

Doug, great description of your ride, love it!

When I was young and much more volatile, I once followed a driver into a fast food drive up after some particularly offensive horn honking and swerving he'd done as I made a left hand turn at a light. I then ripped off his windshield wiper and beat his car with it. I threatened to pull him out of his car and...

Well, now I am much more calm and usually just let the assholes drive away, maybe with a salute if you know what I mean. At 6'3" 200lbs, if they ever come back they usually reconsider, 'cause inevitably its some punk. Fortunately, scenes like that are pretty rare. However, I can get seriously worked up if it happens when I'm riding with my wife. Endanger my wife on the road and a very different side of me will come out, with a strong intent to ensure it won't happen again. I've considered packing a small piece, but the weight-weenie side of me has always won that argument.

That's funny about the gun Bob. These days I usually take two water bottles with me but I leave my phone at home because I don't want the extra weight! :)

There was a time I didn't pack C02, tubing, flat kit, etc because of weight! Had a few flats in a row and got tired of calling roadside assistance (my wife), so now I carry all that and a hand pump!

Busy weekend, but was able to go for a nice ride today. Got a brand new seat that I think may work well, a Selle Max Gel Flow. My saddle is tender now, but still got in a 48 mile ride. My normal flat route of the about the same amount was closed due to flooding, so had some rolling hills to contend with, about 1800' of climbing altogether. A good ride for me on a super crisp day.

Nice riding Allen! 1800' of climbing is no small feat. Hope the saddle works out for you. I do have a saddle bag that I carry all the necessaries in. If I got stranded where I am now it would be a long walk home.

I went for a short 15 mile ride yesterday with my son on the Gateway trail through a wooded area and gentle rolling hills.

Socfan12, how do you like the Selle saddle? I ride a Selle SMP saddle similar to this-

Selle SMP Extra Saddle - Bike Saddles / Seats / Seatposts

It cradles your pelvis and I like the drop off of the front of the saddle.

I also carry an extra tube and 2 CO2 cartridges in my bag.

Hi Mechnutt,

I like the saddle, but I still get saddle pains. Friends have recommended the SMP to me before, but I don't think SI makes them anymore. I have to checkout the link you posted. Thanks for that!

I did ride today on a new Selle saddle: another Flite, but a more racer type (forget the name). It was actually fairly comfortable on my 37mile ride today. We'll see how my behind feels tomorrow.

Just placed an order. I'll let you guys know what I think when I get rid of this damn cold that's got it's claws in me. Hopefully I don't like them at all, but I fear that won't be the case. :)

Sorry about your cold Doug, as for the shorts I do hope you like them :eyebrow:

Socfan 12, check here for the SMP saddles-

Nashbar - Welcome!

and here-

Selle SMP Pro Saddle at BikeTiresDirect

I ride the SMP Extra for its extra padding. It is a little heavy but it is comfortable. There are lighter versions.

Thanks for the links, Mechnutt! I will check them out. Do these retailers have a good return policy?

Hey guys,

As a heads up Competitive Cyclist have the Assos F1 Mile shorts (long version) on sale at $202.96 each. I have both the Mile and the new Cento and I like the Mile better. I like it so much I just bought 2 pairs.

It's time for those who wanted to try Assos to do so at a bargain (of some sort :S)

Assos T FI.Mille_S5 longLeg Bib Shorts | Competitive Cyclist

Thanks for the heads up, Dan! I will try a pair given all the great things I've heard about them...

No problem Allen, hopefully it will resolve your saddle sore issues.

Nashbar has a good return policy. I have been buying from them and performance for years, since the 1980's but give them a call and check their policies.

I got my Assos bibs in the mail today. It sure is nice to see that there are still companies that care about how their product is presented. Usually when I buy an article of clothing it comes in a ziploc bag and that's it. Now I understand that many companies try to save money and cut down on packaging but not Assos. They came in a nicely designed box in which another box inside slides out to show your new gear. Not only did I get the bibs but I also got a trial size jar of chamois creme and washing detergent. There was also a bag in which to put your soiled bibs to help prevent any stretching and premature wear. They also sent a nice catalog of their product line.

I went with the sizing at the CC website and they fit perfect. The material is really nice. Not too tight but not loose at all. The straps are in a different place, close together and more to the middle of your chest, than other shorts I use. One nice little bonus is the tag is sewn on the outside so it doesn't scratch while your riding and drive you nuts until you get home and rip that damn thing out! The chamois is really soft and has different thicknesses throughout the panel, like many others brands. Of course I went for a ride to try them out. First thing I noticed was how nice the fabric is. Just the right tightness and you can just tell it's a quality material from the feel. The chamois is different. It's hard to explain but I seemed to feel the saddle more than usual. The chamois isn't as thick going out to the sides as others I have used which is a nice thing because other bibs can get bunched up right where your leg starts and can chafe the sensitive skin right there. Using these bibs made me realize that I need to turn my saddle every so slightly to the right. With my other shorts it's like a big thick pad that you sit on. With these it becomes part of your body.

So now I'm wondering what some of their other gear is like. This is gonna' be expensive I can just tell. Thanks for the heads up on these dan.

Sorry about the expensive foray into Assos brand territory:D, they are addictive. If ever you are interested in buying their new shorts, the Cento and Championssimo, do try them as they fit very different to the F1Mile. As I mentioned before I like their older shorts better than the new Cento model. I never tried their jersey so I don't know but two jersey brands I really like are Capo (like their shorts too) and Biemme. Biemme are relatively inexpensive, fit very well and vent nicely (after trying a number of brands Biemme was chosen by our cycling team).

All in all I'm happy you enjoy, keep us posted when you do a longer ride.

Went for a quick ride in my new Assos bibtights today. Wow, I really like them. The chamois is perfect for me now. I used to use Gore Xenon bibtights which a variable thickness chamois, too, but a lot thinner. Given my saddle issues, I've gone back to using some of my older PI shorts. The PIs have a much thicker chamois all around. I almost feel like I'm wearing a diaper when wearing these shorts. So the Gore's a too thin, the PIs are too thick, but the Assos is juuust right for me right now. Slightly thicker where I need it, thin where I don't.

I do think the Gore Xenon shorts material breathes a little better than the Assos, But I do like the 'hand' of the Assoss shorts and I can slide back and forth on the saddle a lot easier with the Assoss. Will definitely look to get some more in the future!

Thanks for the heads up, Dan, great recommendation!
