Beautiful...

On CD, from the wonderful Decca box set. It's very likely has been issued on vinyl I suspect.

The originals were on vinyl 7 albums on the Decca owned L'Oiseau Lyre label, DSLO 9,11,28,29,30,31,32. Recorded from 1975 through 1977. My friend, Decca engineer John Dunkerley did the engineering for all 7 albums. Great recordings and performances. They were all recorded at All Saint's Petersham, a church outside of central London, now converted to a luxurious private residence. When John proofread my Decca book, he caught an error - I put a picture of the wrong church in Petersham in the article about the recording venue. He gave me a picture of the correct church which is in the book.

Robert Schumann Piano Concerto in A Minor, Wilhelm Kempff, Kubelik - DG2530-484:

I think Wilhelm Kempff is my favorite pianist. There are many greats, but the way Kempff strikes or encourages or finesses the keys is something to behold. He is/was always impressive and one with his music and this one is no different.

I have collected many different versions of the Beethoven Piano Concerti primarily for my wife. She feels that the Kempff - Leitner set on DG is the best. I have it in a box set - vinyl, of course.

She is a serious amateur player. Back in 1996 she learned all 5 of the concerti over a period of 7 years and played them all with local Bay Area orchestras. She even competed in one of the early Cliburn Amateur competitions in Fort Worth and won one of the prizes, to play the first movement of the Emperor Concerto with the Fort Worth Orchestra.

Haydn Sturm Und Drang Symphonies, Vol.1, No.44 & No.45 - Zagreb-Janigro - Vanguard Stereolab VSD 2145:

This disc has a few more ticks than I prefer but I'm encouraged to seek out more pristine examples of the Vanguard Stereolab label. This may be my only Vanguard Stereolab, I don't know, but when it's quiet it is spectacular! S2 is lush and quiet. Perhaps S1 just needs another cleaning?

The fact that it's Haydn is even more spectacular! If there are more of these Vanguard Haydn pressings I need to find them.

Mike, I believe this is part of a 3 record series with all the Haydn Sturm u. Drang symphonies 44-49. So there are two other records. I don't think Janigro did any other Haydn symphonies for Vanguard. He did some Vivaldi that I have with the chamber group he founded, I Solisti di Zagreb. There are other Haydn Symphonies on Vanguard that I also have, the 6 late London Symphonies 99-104 with Mogens Woldike and the Vienna State Opera Orchestra and Symphonies 59 and 70 with Blum and the Esterhazy Orchestra.

Symphony 45, the Farewell has an interesting back story. Haydn worked for Prince Esterhazy at his estate in rural Hungary, along with a resident orchestra. The orchestra's families did not live there and so there was long separation during the season working for the Prince. Haydn wrote this symphony as a protest to the Prince. In the last movement, the orchestra members slowly leave the stage as the movement progresses, hence the name "Farewell" until at the end only one or two members are left. The Prince got the message and let the orchestra members leave on a long break to go back to their families.

In general Vanguard's sonics were highly regarded. They were a small company started by the Solomon Brothers who also had Joan Baez as one of their artists.

Re: Rotating now | And very relaxing ::

Thanks Larry.

The sound quality of the Vanguard issues now rings a bell. One of the best sounding LP's that I own is Joan Baez Blessed Are...

I never thought I would be a Joan Baez fan (just due to preconceived notions about her politics) but I fell in love with her after my first listen to that LP. Tears came to my eyes the first time I heard, "Lincoln Freed Me Today (The Slave)".

Dvorak Piano Quintet Op.81 - String Quintet Op.97, Bishop, Berlin Phil. Octet - Philips Holland 6500-363:

Another great pressing and recording from Philips...

edit: when I first threw this LP on, I was surprised to hear the String Quintet Op.97 on side two. Though I've heard this piece of music many times over the years, I guess I never knew what it was called. If anything, this disc is worth owning for side two alone. Side one is no slouch, but this pressing is exceptionally quiet on side two with a very beautiful, fun and familiar performance.

Dvorak String Sextet in A Major Op.48, String Quintet in A Minor Op.1, Berlin Phil Octet - Philips 839-754 LY:

Wow this one is a beauty. The fact that the vinyl itself is exceptionally quiet just adds to the pleasure.

Wonderful recording. Not as full bodied as Living Stereo's, but a greater sense of space and hall. Love RR's recordings.

Yes, a very fine recording and good performance. Reference Recording's issueS are very good in general in all formats including HDCD CDs and hi-rez downloads.

The Living Stereo SACD reissues are a bit overrated, IMHO.

The Living Stereo has a bit more body or warmth vs RR, but that could just be slightly higher noise on the LS. But the LS is a bit forward for my taste. Like the presentation on the RR more.

Hi Allen,

Keep the RR recordings coming! Now that I have an Oppo BDP-95 as my spinner, playing the HDCD format is an option. How would you compare these RR HDCD's to the SACD format for sonic quality?

Thanks.

Hey Mike,

Sorry, can't really answer the question as I don't have a really good SACD playback to compare. I know when I had an HDCD capable DAC (Classe DAC1 from many years ago), I could barely hear the difference with and without HDCD. Now my room has changed a lot so maybe I could now, hard to say. Sorry.

I can send you a bunch to try if you'd like, Mike. Mine are all ripped already. Last few I've picked up from Princeton Record Exchange for 1/3 the price!
