Allen's Listening Room

TheSaint, first, welcome to AS!:hey: And thanks for looking at my thread.;)

Sorry I missed your post, Doug! But my system is sort of going through a metamorphosis right now, mostly due to accommodate an analog rig within current budget. Once the dust settles, I'll post the changes in my thread. And like you, Kev, I'm discovering the allure of tubes, a la Allnic.;)

I had to look up metamorphosis such a big word :scholar: I've been playing with a couple of inexpensive tube integrates (love the KT120 tube). But every time I put my SS amp back in I like that too. I think I need both

Go for it :woot:

Hey jt, have just landed the PrimaLuna Dialogue HP Integrated, came with KT-88's, also ordered a full set of EL-34's too but only half of them showed up so am waiting. Having a shiteload of fun with this thing & am going to the 150's after the 34's & 88's, reason is was so impressed with the 120's, "hell", gotta get me some 150's, bigger better stuff.

It's been some time since I've updated this thread. Given a short breather from work I took a few days off and spent some needed time on my room.

First up are some acoustic treatments. Easily the best thing I could have done for the room! I've had the tube traps for a while and they have certainly helped, but the sound and space really opened up with the addition of Vicoustics acoustic treatments. Up front and center are the Multifuser Wood 64. These are made of solid wood and must be hard mounted to the wall (no glue like most of their other products). It was kind of a pain to install, and I've might've installed them a few inches too high. I think Vicoustics' Multifuser DC2 (made of styrofoam) would make a nice alternative that's easier to install (and less expensive, too!). But the Multifuser Wood 64 really helped deepen the soundstage and made the vocals feel less congested. Definitely a great addition to the room.

The acoustic panels on either side of the Multifusers are Cinema Round absorbers. I haven't glued them in place yet as I want to try what it sounds like with the Wave Wood there instead. Once I figure out which I prefer, I'll glue them in place.

I also finally got some record shelves, Ikea Kallax (formerly Expedite). Good, inexpensive shelving thats fairly easy to put together. I wall mounted the large unit as I hear they are prone to collapsing if jiggled.:bonkers: But I'm going to buy another rack for the rear of the room, a new larger unit by Ikea, which I hope acts like a diffuser as well.

With the treatments and shelves up, the room is finally coming together.:D

Super room Allen! Love the Billy Bags rack too. Dang, I wish someone would build racks like that again...to that exacting (and rigid) standard and not just a kit of parts to assemble.

I'm envious that you have that much room to position your loudspeakers that far out in the room if need be. That's something that I wish I had the luxury of doing. Where my speakers are placed they do fine, but I always wonder what if they were out six feet in the room? Sadly, in my case they'd then be two feet from my seating position.

Looks like you're having fun and the record collection is growing too.

Looking good Allen, how do you have your tube traps set up diffuser facing you or the Wall? I have mine facing me in the room corners.

Hi Mike,

The speaker and listening position is really a function of trying to find the smoothest bass response. With the speakers this far out from the front wall, the listening position is about 5' from the rear wall, maybe less. But surprisingly this gives me the smoothest bass response in the room.

Yes, the record collection is small, but growing.:audiophile:

Hey John,

Yes, the diffuser sides of the Tube Traps are facing me. I should experiment a little and see if turned the other way, but I've kept it diffuser side towards me forever and never had a problem.

Nice room Allen!

I'm a fan of Vicoustics as I find they work and are "relatively" affordable. You must have a nice DEEP sounding stage. Love it!

Thanks guys. After almost 2 years it's finally coming together and looking like a listening room, not a storage closet with speakers.

Haha Paul, they look good there, don't they? :)

Allen, nice. Can you pm me about the diff from Ztrons & unity, cheers, kev.

Allen,

YOU are a lucky man. That's a pretty big space to fill with sound. Awesome!
+ 1. What a great journey with your room build Allen! Nice choice going for the Magico S5's & CH Precision gear  The CH D1 is for sure one of the best single box cd players & from my auditions sounds very smooth and sophisticated. With the CH D1, adding the A1 power amp is a no brainer. And the CH line gives you plenty of flexibility to further upgrade in future which is good. Awesome room
