Allen's Listening Room

Hey Guys,

Just a quick post before I run off to dinner.

The speakers are fully setup and music with a capital 'M' is playing! The first few notes the first thing I noticed was the lack of electronic artifacts, just pure music playing. Incredible. Out of the box, the Alexia/Dag combo is amazing and I don't even have it dialed in 100% perfect yet.

Will post more pics and feedback after dinner!

cheers!

Told you! :D

OK, I gotta ask…what did you do with that Stiga Table Tennis board? I hope you still have space for it. Stiga ia a quality brand!

Do you have bass trapping in your soffits?

I only have foundational bass traps for now. Will add acoustic treatments after I get my room analyzer. I believe I do have a resonance around the 50-75hz range, but measurements will confirm that and tell me exactly where, then I'll treat it.

Really ? U have a time for eat ? You nuts.

Haha, it was our Valentine's Day dinner. Weekdays are tough for me due to my schedule at work. :(

Told you! :D
You were so right, Mike! It's an imminently listenable and musical speaker! We are very lucky to have this speaker!

Haha, you remember that, Norman? Still have it, but we need to shuffle things around to make things comfortable again. The exercise gear (which we don't use) and the ping pong table take up a lot of space!

Dinner with family, dessert with Sinead!

+1, Doug! Sinead never sounded so good, or realistic! :exciting:

Wow, nice size room and an interesting read.

Do the soffits include additional bass trapping?

Would really like to see some acoustic measurements once the equipment is up and running

Indeed. As said above, just have some foundational traps for now. After I take measurements, figure out a game plan, treatments will go up. I will post on this thread (measurements and treatments), so keep an eye out for this thread.

But first, I need to optimize speaker and listening position to see if I can ameliorate that mild bass hump. I just plopped the speakers down where my previous speakers were, so that position may not be optimal for the Alexias. I need to read the manual and work from there.

Allen,

Glad you are pleased. The Alexias are tremendously flexible - a significant number of adjustments are possible. I would hope your dealer is helping you with that.

Also, I leave my D'Agostino on all the time. - except when I'm out of town. You can turn off the amp meter bulb via a switch in the back to preserve it when the amp is not in use.

Enjoy!

So how does the system sound? Out of the box, all I can say is WOW! Dan told my dealer that my stereo amp is specially tweaked by him (this is the same amp shown at CES, btw). I don't know what he did, but I can hear no electronic artifacts whatsoever! I thought the Rowland was brought to a new level with the Shunyata cables, but the Dag takes it even further. The smoothest, grain free, and noise free music I've ever heard.

The tweeters on the Alexias are really special. Non fatiguing yet fully transparent to the source. My son easily heard the difference while we listened to Stairway to Heaven togehter. He felt it just sounded more like real music.

The system obviously isn't broken in so I can only imagine the sound getting better. I need to work on speaker/listening position to optimize bass response, but that will take me a few weeks of reading, experimenting, and tweaking.

Here's a pic of the system all put together:

I am (used to be) a Table tennis buff, having seen the likes of World and European Champs play live! The Swedes, Germans, Brits and mighty Magyars, for example. So yeah, I spotted the great table in a great basement. Killer basement that can accommodate many passions at the same time. Great.

That's what I intend to do - leave the amp on with the light off.

It's about an hour from Princeton, maybe a little less. Jenkintown, PA to be exact.

Ha, then our table is wasted on us. My son and I used to play fairly regularly, but have moderated quite a bit lately. It's a fun indoor game where you can build up quite a bit of sweat.

Wow nice room Allen! Must sound incredible.

Thanks, Michael. I love it so far, and I'm sure she'll continue to break in and sound even better over time! How're the Magico's treating you?

Looks sweet Allen. I love the spotlight in the middle. When do the Ultra 5's arrive?

Allen, settle down with the audio-porn. I've got a big audio-boner now, and no speakers or gear to help with my little problem!

Your room looks great, I may want to chat with you a little about it all. I know I'll speak with Jeff too as things progress. Setting up in my new house will be an interesting journey as the room was built out as a "man cave" complete with wetbar, dishwasher, cabinets for libations, microwave, and a small wine cooler. I have no idea what it is going to sound like, there's a large window and two glass doors behind where the speakers will be, and no door to close to the upstairs. As I said... a journey awaits.

Very happy to see you have those Alexias making music. I can only envision a quick depletion of your wine collection as you cycle through your music, listening and hearing everything as new.

Enjoy!

:roflmao: Hopefully this episode will pass quickly and in the end you'll have a brand new pair of Alexia's, too! :woot:

The plans for your room sound great! I hope to get some kind of wine credenza for my room, to house a few bottles, glasses, decanter and what not. Feel free to ask me any q's, but definitely talk to Jeff. He gave me great tips and ideas that really have worked out wonderfully!

Good luck on your journey! I'll be posting mine on this thread as things progress and look forward to seeing/hearing about yours Bob.

To funny. No speaker port is safe with Bob all pent up and no aural release. So sad.

I'm contemplating a little run up to Seattle to lay eyes on Alexia. But going from audio porn to an audio lap-dance isn't going to help my problem. But I will be able to verify the tiny little blems are acceptable, and drill down on getting them delivered.
