About to pull the trigger on Tannoy

Paul, what a great thread! You should get this thread moved to under Member's Systems. This is a great journey and thanks for taking us along!

So I may have lost track: is the amplification looking like Allnic Pre -> Tenor amp -> Westies?

Not quite Allen, but that's okay. Tomorrow it will change anyway! :)

Chris . I think with your Quicksilver's with Tannoy Kensington can sing also I think the DC series more for the HT use and Prestige lines are more for the Musical system.
Thank you Paul. The Quicksilvers and the Kensington is the combination I was looking at and the wife thinks the Kensingtons are " pretty" . You know what they say about a happy wife :woot:

Hi Chris. More I think It will be really great combination with your amps.

However why SE ? If you can swing it go with the "Gold Reference" with Alnico magnet driver. :woot:

Do you think the LM218a would work well with the Westminister's? There is one on AK for $2800 in NJ that has been for sale for a while.

Hi Mark,

What other Tannoy speakers are "Gold Reference" with Alnico magnet driver in a more manageable size? I'm curious. :)

The Kensington is the smallest with the Alnico magnet and Pepperpot tweeter. However, the Turnberry is a very nice speaker at half the cost, not half the size though.

Thank you. Time for some research. :)

That's a great price for that amp, especially when you don't see too many on the used market. In my opinion I think you would want more power for the Westminsters. 15" woofers in that huge cabinet might stress the 218ia, depending on the type of music of course. If you had said the Canterburys or the Kensingtons I would say to go for it, but I have my reservations with the Westminsters.

Maybe then a single MC275 is the answer for a while or another amp in that vein that allows more tube type rolling.

Absolutely. I would want at least 50 watts to power the Westminster's. I think Paul's finding out that more power helps them produce their great sound. I don't think you need to go overboard with a mega watt amp though.

If I remember correctly Tannoy recommends a minimum of 50 watts on the Westminsters. The sensitivity rating of 99 is rather deceptive on these speakers based on their complicated crossovers and the construction parts.
One MC275 is certainly enough though.

Currently with 10 watts of power is more than I need right now BUT I really loved the sounds of Tenor amp.

Only amp that makes me "WOW" factor so far. ;)

So far my finding is it's matter of quality not quantity. I can't wait to try some more set amps. :)
