What are you watching?

Last night I watched this; BD @ 3D :::

--

* And what a stupid flick it was! ...Lame actors, lame dialog, lame plot, and lame CGI robots with nowhere to go but stuck in their own little bubble.
This is for kids, and gamers, and comic book readers and with nowhere else to go.

That's too bad because Guillermo del Toro ('Pan's Labyrinth') has potential as a director; but no way here with that fake (CGI) money machine from Hollywood.

If you're like me you'll feel similar.

Last night I revisited two flicks; the first one (2006), bad (but strictly for the 'pulsating' sound; good surround & strong LFE channel), and the other (1956) a great Classic (and what a ride; sound wise & imagination wise). :)

* Funny sometimes the mood we can be in and the decisions that ensued.

Forbidden Planet is a great movie and also is forerunner of Stereo, two channel in theatres.

A year or two ago I went to revival of the movie at a famous theater that only shows only OLD movies: The Loews in Jersey City.

In their introduction they explained that originally Forbidden Planet and others movies at that era were recorded on mono, they did not have stereo recording then. To get the stereo effect the left or right speaker actually had its volume raised, timed with the movie. This theatre had one of the last surviving prints with the original soundtrack and we saw, and heard, the movie as it was shown 60 years ago. The print was not in perfect shape, but it was fascinating to listen to the sound track. Of course Anne Francis looked good in any era.

We need more participation in this thread. I am sure that most members here are watching movies at home or at their local theater.
And no matter how big or small the screen, or the media; Streaming, Downloading, Cable, Satellite, YouTube, Facebook, Cinemax, HBO, Netflix, Vudu, Hulu Plus, Redbox, Blu-ray, DVD, VHS, Beta, Laser Disc, etc.

The Way Back? --- Did that star Mr. Peabody?

Barry, when I first read your post above (quote), I didn't know Mr. Peabody, so I could not make any link. ...
The Time Machine - The "Way Back Machine"

Now I just want to make sure that we're on the same page regarding the right flick. :)

Bob,

I have always liked getting into bed, especially on a cold night, and watching a good baseball from your side of the country, a “light” movie and a good TV show. So I put up, by our standards, a small Home theatre in my bedroom.

I have a 6.1 system in the bedroom: A Marantz 8002 receiver, a Pioneer Elite 50 inch TV, and Oppo 95, 3 in wall speakers in the front and three in ceiling ones in the back, along with an in ceiling sub-woofer. The TV is in specially built closet so the system takes up virtually no space in the room.

As I have gotten older, I sometimes tucker out earlier than I used to, so I went to the bedroom. Monday night there was NOT a decent TV show to be found. There used to be one or two shows on every night that I could watch, but boy, has that shipped sailed. Other than News and sports, gosh there is [precious little on Network TV.

I did see a movie called “Raising Helen.” This was a small movie with a decent cast that didn’t stop it from being a terrible picture. Helen, played by the beautiful Kate Hudson, a free spirit single woman, unexpectedly inherits three children when her sister passes. As bad as that was the sister was lucky that she didn’t have to suit through the whole movie. Everything, the dialogue, the plot, the ending was predictable and cliché and boring And just not funny. Garry Marshall, the director, has done a few decent movies, but he has such a sit com approach to everything. In fact this could have been a sit com pilot, coping Bachelor Father, Family Affair, and a few thousand others.

On thing. There must be a close up of Kate Hudson every 36 seconds. As with many beautiful women in the movies, she didn’t act, she posed throughout the entire movie.

Tonight I do get two TV shows: NCIS and SHIELD.

Barry, I know some people for who your small bedroom home theater setup is their main home theater rig.
And I know few kids (twenty-one and younger) who have a front projector in their bedroom, with that very large display.

Most importantly is the fidelity of the picture & sound. ...And the content for your personal contentment.

Life is great! :)
