Reviewer Rooms

I think it's fair to ask that if you feel compelled to trash reviewers' rooms and systems that you should list the gear that makes up your system and post detailed pictures of your room if you haven't already done so. Otherwise, people can draw their own conclusions as to why you wouldn't be willing to do that. If you like to hold your nose up in the air as you throw stones, it's time to go open kimono.

I've been in this room 6 or 7 times in the last 15 years (and heard any number of different speakers and gear). visually it does appear handicapped.....even in person. it's a very fine and balanced sounding room and has high levels of resolution. the sweet spot is in the near field. it can be overdriven but even then imaging suffers but it does not get busy or hashy sounding.

it's not perfect but an effective listening/reviewing room for sure.

it's biggest challenge is it's on the second floor and getting heavy stuff up there can be tough (or expensive).

My assmption was that these three rooms were posted as examples of good rooms, not bad ones. Certainly what judgements one might make from simple photos suggest these three rooms are much better acoustically than most of those posted early in this thread.

agree those three are certainly in the 'good to pretty good' virtual quasi room review category.

since I had a reasonable amount of experience with the room, I figured it might be helpful to get actual listening feedback (from multiple occasions with multiple speakers and amps) as opposed to simply observations from pictures. I suppose it reads a little defensive so I get your comment.

Mike-What is a virtual quasi room?

Hmmm-- Aren't the BIG Wilsons too close to the rear wall?

What happened to the WASP doctrine and the "Zone of neutrality" procedure.

Just curious

Mike-What is a virtual quasi room?

you left out one word. not 'virtual quasi room'......'virtual quasi room review'

what I mean is all us 'experts' looking at pictures (virtually......no listening) and then guessing (quasi) pronouncing opinions about how they might sound (room review).

so I assigned those 3 room pictures to a category (good to pretty good) within the broader term.

got it?

yes, but no.

yes; those Wilson's have front vents, so they can be placed against a wall.

but no, it's still not ideal for a review. however; some rooms and lifestyles demand that a speaker be placed against a wall, so feedback about how that worked would be useful.

Now that you have explained it, it does make sense. Thanks Mike.

I'm on ya page with this Mike but not to nitpick further--- no corner Bass Trapping evident?

I'd vote some serious Mid/Low energy would be present in that existing setup.

Oops!--I may have stepped into the "virtual quasi" realm--- correct me if it is purpose built double walled no connecting Ribs /etc/etc----

Time to pipe down maybe!!

Gee, is it ok that I post pictures of reviewer's rooms without listing my system
or posting pictures of my listening room?

First, my username is jap.

My only motive is to share pictures of reviewers' rooms without any comments.

I made my point, and I'm not asking you to agree with it. AS belongs to Mike and he sets the rules. If people choose to become audiophile vampires and try and suck the life and fun out of this hobby by running other people's systems and rooms into the ground and rarely ever having anything positive to say and meanwhile keep their systems and rooms a dark secret, it sets a certain tone. If the majority of people on a forum love that tone, that's fine too.

We must also not forget the importance of the seating position as well. If you're sitting in a bad null, the whole sound goes to hell. Of course, we can't know for sure without measuring, but I can't imagine that sitting behind a desk against the back wall is a good seating position:

That isn't a desk, but a coffee table. And the chair is an expensive Herman Miller Eames type 2' from the wall. You can't see the room well from that perspective.

I agree with you that reviewers even who don't have dedicated rooms need to pay attention to treatment - there are ways to disguise it well into the environment.

Well their Poll confirms the obvious .....

Time for a poll:
Do you have a dedicated listening room?

  • No (82%, 283 Votes)
  • Yes (18%, 61 Votes)
Total Voters: 344Vote
