Don't have hear it to know this setup will be seriously lacking in Dynamics, Presence & Tone, and thus - musical involvement.

Jim
You know more about set-up than most all of us but I have to disagree with your last point. The lack of dynamics, presence and tone have little impact on musical involvement of the average listener. Maybe a bit more of us crazies in this hobby.

Sorry Jim!

We could not disagree more on this topic. Enhancing musical involvement through addressing Dynamics, Presence & Tone has been my focus for well over twenty years. It's ALWAYS what I aim for whenever voicing.

But I have no interest whatsoever in an argument. Glad we are on a board where we can disagree without going off the rails!

Also, for me it has relatively little to do with the brand or model of components (but all too often, their location), and everything to do with proper placement - first - of the listening seat, and second - of the speakers), including separation and toe - both major contributors to Presence & Tone when done right.

IMO, of course...

I turned the volume all the way up on my computer and I still can't hear any sound coming out of those pictures! :D

My point, individuals who listen in their automobiles or via their iPhone with earbuds are just as involved in their music as any of us with good systems. They may not be getting much in the way of great SQ, but that doesn't take away from their love of music. I'll give you another example. Assuming one subscribes to the notion that vinyl and tape produce better SQ than digital, then based on your position they should be more involved in the music. If all I had was vinyl or tape I would exit this hobby rather quickly as there is no way I can put up with the BS that goes with those mediums full time.

Like you I have no desire to debate the issue and respect what you are able to accomplish with your techniques. I was fortunate to spend some time with Mike last Tuesday after you had set up his main room and surely enjoyed what I heard.

Agree 100%!

Awesome!

For what it's worth, I have written many thousands of words re the topic of achieving musical involvement with "audiophile systems".

It's what my Through the Sound Barrier project is all aboit.

I think that there is a setup that will typically be better. 98% of the time. But depending on the room, and not seeing the rest of the room, how can you tell if that isn't the best that the room will allow?

Hi Jim,

Would it be possible for you to show a picture of a setup that you have done properly? I'm just curious to see what one of your tweaked systems looks like as far as setup. I have played around moving my equipment a lot and picked the places that it sounds best to me but have not made measurements and such. Thanks!

I'd second this! It would be awesome to see what a properly tweaked room looks like.

Jim,

Since your expertise enables you to say without listening when a room would not sound its best, what type of room would you be able to say, without listening, potentially sounds good? We'd love to see what such a room looks like.

Thanks!

Take a look at the photos of Mike's center room at his new Suncoast Audio store. There is a thread where Mike's discuss's Jim recent visit to set up the room.
