Reviewer Rooms

Perhaps so. I should have been more clear.

I keep thinking that I will run into such a system. Just because - out of maybe 1500 systems - I haven't heard one that comes close, that doesn't mean that there are not some well set-up systems out there. I simply have never encountered one.

I could say more, but there's no need to encourage the food fights already ongoing in this thread...

Well . you cant pull out now ... :)

Not trying to start a food fight, but it would be interesting for you to visit Mike Lavigne and Steve Williams, perhaps Philip O'Hanlon as well?

hummmmmm.

I don't know Jim, but I know many really consider him first rate with rooms and systems, and I have a huge amount of respect for him. and I have no doubt he has much, much, higher levels of these skills than I have (I have no skills). mostly I'm just relentless. I hear something I want my room to do, I figure out a way to make it happen. and my room and gear do have performance potential.....so the pieces are there.

my problem is I would not allow anyone to mess around with my room or speakers except my speaker designer.

I suppose Jim would have show me a room better sounding than mine that he did, before I would consider him messing with mine. understand I'm not saying that a number (maybe many) of those 'better' are not out there he has done. I'd just need to hear one....and that would motivate me.

btw; it's not that my room can't get better......I expect, over time, that I will make it better just by continuing to think about it and then working on it. so why wouldn't Jim be able to too.....quicker and even better.

I guess i should update my 3rd Edition to this one and send the old on to my favorite reviewer ...

Nope no Ban , you ...? ? :)

No.

A few decades back , before you became an audiophile, clipping expert and later , reviewer extraordinaire , they used to test phono cartridges, TT's , well practically everything before the dumbing down. Personally I would not be purchasing a 12K cartridge without measurements and if i wanted , i could measure it myself , as i currently do to my little stock pile ..

I resent your relentless attacks, I really do. You have no idea how long I have been into audio, I've never claimed to be a clipping expert or a "reviewer extraordinaire." You just like hanging labels on people. I was around in the days when audio magazines routinely tested everything they reviewed, but we both know this doesn't happen anymore with very few exceptions which is why I asked you where someone is supposed to obtain measurements of a cartridge they are going to buy.

BTW Manufacturers dont provide measurements they provide advertising data ... :)

No kidding. If you ever read my responses to people who claim they love measurements and wouldn't buy anything without having measurements, I tried to explain the difference between measurements and manufacture specifications and the vast majority of people have no true measurements of the gear they own.

Have you tested your past reference amp on the NOLA's yet, i bet that Phase Linear sounds good on them...

Regards...

Nope. I'm quite happy with the Ref 75 even if you think I shouldn't be. But then, you have never heard my system.

Ohhhh the Irony .....!

What attacks MEP ...?

You mean when you come swinging in Jabbing and then get hit with a counter punch ...?
C'mon, man up, take it like you give it and stop the whining, yet here you are demanding respect as a reviewer and giving none to others wanting to do their thing ..

Personally ..

I have no Beef with you apart from the brummy whining , Mostly , I wish we could actually have a proper dialogue , exchange ideas without the angst and not give Mike a fit, yet you prefer drive by jabs.

BTW, yep !

I can guarantee clipped dynamics off that Ref75, the more dynamic ( crest factor) the music and or the equipment being reviewed the worse it will sound to you on your system , well that's my supposition and I'm sticking to it ..

:)

A non specific, non dedicated room will have some warts ....

I think it hurts the credibility of a leading magazine's editor to have this as his main listening/review area. Atkinson's doesn't do him many favors either, but he writes fewer reviews and does far more actual magazine editing than Harley.

Not a Harley fan, but he used to have a dedicated and treated room and wrote about his move into a different house and why.

When I think about the rooms manufacturers have (Caelin at Shunyata, Alon at Magico, etc.), they are fine examples of how to do a room. Right now, Hans Ole Vitus is working on a new room, I've seen some preliminary pictures and it's going to be great. I think setting a good example is the way to go.

Mike

As I said on another thread concerning this subject, I still find it amazing that the Editors/Publishers of these publications allow these photo's of rooms of this type to be published on their websites. Whether or not the rooms "work" for the purpose intended is not the point. The impressions they give do not help the publications credibility and I also find it interesting who the members are that seem to want to accept it as allowable. "Insiders?"

Maybe the Russians stole it.

The pics got deleted Along with 65K of my emails ....

BTW, very excited, found a cure for my insomnia , reading an online review right now, Part 1 of 3 and Yaaaaaawn , wow what a panacea , i can barely finish writ , zzzzzzzz ...
