Psvane HiFi 300B in my Lampizator Big 7 balanced.....

I used Elrog 300B on my Lampizator Big 7 before and one tube failed on it. The replacement tube also failed on Big 7 as well. I ended up returning both pairs. That said, the sound was way better than Psvane 101D replica. I didnot even need to A/B to know the huge difference. It has the HF/LF extension as 101D yet with fuller and clearer sound. I think Elrog is like a bigger 101D, with the extention, clarity and fluence of later and reproduce more details.

My system:

Auralic Aries -> Big 7 -> First Watt J2 / Coincident Frankenstein 300B amp -> Voxativ Fullrange.

Voxativ drivers are very revealing and I am sure that tubes easily demonstrate their characteristics through the system.

I therefore purchased a pair of Takatsuki 300B and one single Takatsuki 274B. The rectifiers goes with Big 7 (with 101D replica) and the 300B power tubes go with Frankenstein amps (with Mullar GZ37 rectifier). This combo produce the best treble I've ever heard. The flute sounds so good that I feel it is un-real! I cannot judge everthing else right now since my Voxativ drivers have developed a voice coil rubbing problem and there are noises when playing low strings of guitars and I am sending them in for service.

I haven't tried Takatsuki 300B on Big 7 yet. I need to purchase and put a pair of cheap 300B on Big 7 first to make sure that the Elrog failure is Elrog's problem (which is now reported at forums). But I do believe that they will sound great on Big 7.

I feel that the best 300Bs extend to both HF and LF, and meanwhile provide more and more information in mid range. I think that is the right direction towards a great system. 2 cents.

Sorry about your problem with the Elrogs. That's what has me afraid to buy them, the hassle of if and when they fail.

Joe, thanks. The dealer stood by the tubes he sells so it has not been an issue. It does get me worried about trying other 300B's though. That said, Elrog is really not a typical 300B and deviates from WE standard.

I would have no trouble or worry about trying other tubes. I bought inexpensive Psvane HiFi tubes and love them. I did buy the Psvane replica tubes and sold them to a friend before I got my balanced dac. I should have held on to them because HE loves them. Oh well. :D

Yes, you are the 2nd or third Big7 person to report Elrog failures. I thought they had overcome this issue, but apparently not yet! Weird too, as the Dac does not stress out the tubes like power amps do, so I can just imagine how fast they fail in power amps!

Mike and Shawn have put all kinds of expensive tubes in their Lampi (like original WEs). Lukasz said their is little to no risk. I dont think he ever had a report of tube failure due to the circuit...just old tubes dying a natural deaths. I have all kinds of old tubes going back to 1919 and not a failure yet.

Which output tubes have you tried so far, Joe?

Norman, Thanks. I took your and Al's advice and jumped on Big 7 and 101D WE replica and have been a happy camper ever. :)

I will try Taka when my drivers are back.

Hi, I have heard the WE 1995 issue, and compared it to the AVVT 300bs in a 300B amp on the WE mono speaker. I preferred the AVVT. Another audiophile buddy prefers the AVVT to his Westrex on his Audionote. The UK Lampi distributor preferred AVVT and EML 300b to WE 90s issue.

If you read this article with Peter Qvotrup of Audionote, you will realize what market pricing already tells you...that one needs to go back to 70s at least for NOS WEs to sound like what they are reputed to be. Personally, I wouldn't buy a Westrex.

Psvane WE 1:1 Replica 300B Review - Page 2 of 2 - Dagogo | A Unique Audiophile Experience

Psvane WE replica used might be a good price. At the lowest price, the best are JJ. I am getting myself a set of KR Audio 300b set of Quads

Tak is out of my current budget. As for Elrog, there are a lot of complaints on WBF of their tubes failing, so I will stay clear http://www.whatsbestforum.com/showt...-plain-unlucky&p=307652&viewfull=1#post307652

Hi Norman,

Only the Psvane 300B HiFi and 101D stock tubes in my Big 7 balanced and GG. I have heard the Elrog, Takatsuki, Psvane replica 300B, and 101D's in the SE Lampi's. I love them all for different reasons. The Elrogs were probably the best sounding, sadly :D

I've been going crazy changing Rectifiers and realize how big a change they make alone.

It's reported that the filament resistance in the Elrog may be off the standard for 300Bs and causing failures. Just buy Taks.

Hard to argue with that. Would love to try some Takasuki's. I sell them, but never ordered any for myself yet.

Mike,

It sounds like now is the time to order some. Folks are going to need a new top of the line tube for their Lampi GG's now that Elrog is out of the picture.

I have been using Psvane tubes with good success in my 2A3 SET amps. Got the fancy ones from Rachel at Grant Fidelity. I had used the Shuguang Treasures until their reliablilty problems (resulting in the creation of Psvane) a few years back - apparently solved now, and KR tubes (which were standard with my Cary 2A3 Signatures) until they got too expensive.

Dan Schmalle told me that the odd name Psvane has an interesting origin. The owners when they started, liked the Pavane (probably Ravel, maybe Faure). So they handwrote some copy to their printer in China. He had never heard of the word Pavane and misread the "a" for an "s", hence Psvane!

I use both the Psvane WE 845s and WE 300B in my Chalice Audio 'Grail' SET amps..They are superb.Best tubes i have tried..

Don't suppose any of you guys tried the gold lions 300b? Tempted to try them.

I compared these to KR 300b on a 300b amp. Both amp owner and I thought it was no competition on complex music - the back choral or Gnomus. Same with JJ. Both JJ and EH are sweeter on vocals.
