New Magico speakers arriving 04/2015!

These must be the older Krells (FPB series or older?) as the newer Krells (Evo line) are fairly neutral. Strong and dynamic as ever, but very neutral in tonality.

Hi

Yes, that should be correct. I am using the MRAs with 1 kilowatt at 8 ohm each. It might be wrong saying they are (much) on the warm side - they never get hard or cold, with excellent control :)

You rang? :hey:

This thread has gotten pretty hot lately. Don't know where to chime in but I've had little desire to even look at gear since discovering Pass/Magico. I've posted this in my S5 review but the ONLY thing about Pass/Magico that doesn't absolutely blow me away is its dynamic range (speed is excellent, it's the total range I'm talking about...I don't care for Raidho but those things had that little extra that was special). Perhaps the M-Projects or an upcoming Magico speaker(s) with the new tweeter can bridge this gap a bit so long as they don't alter voicing.

I have heard hair-raising dynamics on Madfloyd's M-Pro driven by Pass XA 160.8.

At Axpona I thought the M was the best Magico sound I have heard. I preferred it to the Q7's at that particular venue with those particular systems and rooms.

I bet the .8's are awesome but don't get David started on how much better it would sound with his Vitus over the Pass stuff.

Lol, no not at all. The Pass .8 and XS series are awesome Class A amps. Both fine choices with Magico! :).

I just remember back when you sure didn't feel that way about the Pass xa.5's. We had a pretty strong disagreement on this subject over on AA. :skeptical:

MRA's, niiice! Arguably Dan's best amps - ever.

Really? You didn't think the M-series were boring? God, they were limp and lifeless. And that's not the speakers fault.

I was specifically referring to the time I spent listening to the optical cartridge. I found it quite good. I heard some saying they felt the Goldfinger was not set up right (at least early in the show). I preferred both to the DCS.

At the same time, however, I am on the record in this thread saying the Magico sound from both the M's and Q's was not for me. My comment above was a relative one.

That's true...however with the advent of the Pass .8 & especially XS series (& MadFloyd & Mike's enthusiastic feedback), I've had pause to re-consider my view. I've since taken time out to read the reviews and formed a positive view of that gear. Mind you, I haven't heard the Pass gear in my system, so bare in mind my thoughts are only anecdotal, however they clearly have excellent synergy with Magico.

Well David I greatly respect your open mindedness and efforts to take another angle on Nelson's work. (Some even prefer the xa.5's on Magicos.) Glad to have you over here.:hi:

Ok thanks for clarifying!

Hi David,

Now that you've had your Vitus SCD-025 for a few months and it's had the opportunity to fully break in, how are you liking its sound? Do you have any other additions to your system planned for this year?

Best,
Ken

Hi Ken,

Well the first part of your comment is true!...I've had the Vitus for about 3 months, however due to some system changes (cables/isolation) and a bit of juggling to tee up a time with my Tech to come over to help with setup, my SCD-025 has been sitting idle on the top of my rack :(. The good news is I have an time locked in next weekend for Russell to come over to help out. The feedback on VA's room at the Munich show has been fantastic, so I can't wait to post my first impressions :yahoo1:.

Good question re: my system plans as i've been quietly researching options behind the scenes for the next step in my system development. Basically I've been trying to decide where I could get the biggest gains in my system. After discussing options with Hans Ole Vitus & others, I've decided to trade up my SIA-025 at the end of the year & order the new SS-025 power amp & an SL-102 pre. Hans said the SS-025 is designed like the SM-011 mono's & would give me 80% of the sound of the 011's, whilst the SL-102 would obviously kill the SIA's linestage.

The SS-025 also has a lot more power and control compared to the SIA (doing 15 w in kl A and 320W kl A/B) which the S5's need. My friend who bought the SM-011 mono's said they actually sound a little warmer than his old SIA-025 & the mid bass and lower midrange were more fleshed out, so I think I'm ok .

I've also got a spare pair of Jorma Prime xlr's & set of (4) Stillpoints Ultra 6's + Ultra bases set aside for the new SL-102 pre. I figure there is no point buying a great preamp if you don't throw the best cables & isolation at it! These plans are all in harmony with my goal to reduce my box count, keep my system balanced & achieve excellent synergy, whilst having no weak links .

Wow, nice David. Some how I bet some new S7's would find good company with the SS-025. ;)

Cheers Paul. The S7's would be too big for my room, though if Magico release an S5 Mk II in 1.5-2yrs I will very likely upgrade. Given Magico are continuously developing their products, any negatives from the S7 should be ironed out by that stage. But yes, I could see that being a great match :audiophile:.

Hi David,

This sounds like a terrific plan. I couldn't find any information on the SS-025 power amp on the Vitus website, so maybe you could describe it. Your setup has come together beautifully. Nice to see you adding some high end cabling and Stillpoints as icing on the cake.

Best,
Ken

Thanks for your kind words Ken :).The SS-025 was only debuted at the recent Munich show & I know the VA team are still busy setting up their new factory, so it could be a while before they update their website. Fyi, I posted some photos and comments here.

The Stillpoints were recommended to me by Hans Vitus, whilst I just love the natural/organic and sophisticated sound of Jorma wire. Actually it's funny you mentioned cake, because all this is making me salivate! :hungry:

Hi David,

Thanks for the link. The SS-025 looks absolutely beautiful. That's terrific that it is using some of the technology from the Masterpiece Series. I bet you can't wait to get your hands on that baby! Plus a new preamp, man, you'll be in heaven! :D

Best,
Ken

Thanks Ken,

Yeah I was debating at one stage whether to invest in a Vitus MP series transport & dac, but after getting great f/back from a friend who has a Vitus RCD-101, I realized the SCD-025 is good enough thank you ;). Then along came the SS-025 and it was like one of those "ah hah" moments :cryforjoy:. A few enquiries later and it was clear that was the way forward for my system. I'm also fortunate enough to have some good transducers to hear the improvement...can't wait!

Cheers,
David.

From the photos of the prototype S7 at Munich it appears as though Magico are using inverted dust caps as opposed to the more conventional type used in the S5? Can anyone who was at visited this room confirm this? Also i'd be interested to know if the S7 has two modules, or if the separation in the extruded aluminium panels is purely cosmetic? My guess is they have a quasi-separated top module given there are no jumpers joining the low & mid/high section.
