MSB Launches Two New DAC’s

"...Tidal has grown modestly, with sources telling Billboard that the service has approximately 1 million subscribers around the world (380,000 to 480,000 in the U.S.), of which 30,000 or so are signed up for its $19.99/month hi-fidelity audio tier."

Lets see:
Monthly:
970,000 @ $10 = $9,700,000
30,000 @ $20 = $600,000
Total = $10,300,000 per month

Yearly:
$10.3M x 12 = $123.6m

How about those on the family plan (like me)?

I don't understand the tidal naysayers. Since the day it's launched I've been a monthly subscriber and love it. With Roon its amazing. Why are folks seeming to want it to fail? The business model seems reasonable. Noted there has been some recent controversy. It could do with some more main stream or other music (less rap) music featuring in the featured artist list... though I don't mind some of the classic rap tunes from GMF and others. The MQA selection is great and sounds great through the Rossini.... wouldn't mind hearing an MSB DAC one day soon (segway to back on topic)....

Brilliant post. I agree 100%.

I was a Tidal beta tester.

Am I correct in thinking that you are running HQPlayer in your SGM computer and upconverting all your digital to DSD512?

no, the MSB Select II works best 'bit perfect' from the SGM, meaning no re-sampling or changes to the format, HQ Player is 'passive'. MSB Select II has it's own 'dsd-optimization' process for all dsd files I can turn on or off.....much better on. according to SGM, the Select II is the only dac which is best 'bit-perfect' they have found (as of 6 months ago).

Nobody argues the product isn't nice for hifi. But honestly, all of us would move to Spotify if it had full 16/44.1 streaming - that says a lot about Tidal.

Tidal's business model has been a complete failure since Jay-Z took over and consequently is losing a lot of money. The company hasn't convinced folks that supporting its more artist (and video) centric model is worthwhile. So concerns for Tidal's viability going forward are justified imo.

I understand that Tidal was in financial straits BEFORE Jay-Z took over. What is very nice about Tidal is its integration with Roon and the fact that it provides CD quality. Its GUI is awful and I don’t care for the music recommendations. For those two purposes I use Roon.
If Spotify were to offer CD quality but no Roon integration, I would stay with Tidal. And btw, I do not listen to Rap.

Based on everyone’s feedback, I have decided to stick with the ethernet renderer input module for my MSB Premier, which rules out the Lumin U1.

So my decision now is whether to go for the Roon Nucleus + or the Innuos Zenith. From what I can gather, the biggest advantage the Nucleus (both models) has over the Zenith is its superior processor - but I understand that this is relevant only if I wanted to do DSD upsampling, otherwise with Roon installed on the Zenith I am told that it will be more than capable of running Roon (the Zenith is a Roon-certified hardware partner). If anyone thinks that the Nucleus + has additional advantages I would be grateful to hear from you.

The key advantages of the Zenith over the Nucleus appear to be (ignoring the built-in CD ripper, which is not a priority for me but would be a cherry on top):

* Flexibility - Can use it as a Roon Core OR can run off its own software and stream Tidal, Qobuz, Spotify and access my NAS (which, if I buy the Zenith with a 1 TB SSD drive, I would end up using primarily as a back up).

* Power supply - Appears to have superior power supply over the Nucleus.

* Includes an SSD drive - Adding a 1 TB SSD drive to the Nucleus + (probably all I would need) would mean the pricing of the two units would be about the same.

* Can connect via ethernet cable directly to the MSB Premier; signals from the Nucleus + would need to be sent to my MSB Premier via my router. Not sure how much of an advantage this direct path is - hopefully others can chime in here.

Are there any Roon users who use the DSD upsampling function?

I think I agree with your premise but Rap/Hip Hop became the most popular genre last year with over ~24.5% of the market. Rock was next at just under 21%.

Can u give us your exact HQPlayer setting?

TIA

here is an HQ Player 'setting' screen shot I took from my phone. i'm not the most knowledgeable person on these settings. they were dialed in remotely by Emile last fall when we did a number of listening tests on various settings.

Roon could very easily integrate with Spotify. But Roon is effectively "fixing" Tidals lousy app in several ways.

Not going to happen because Roon Labs explained in Roon forum that Spotify forbid it.

because it makes no sense for Spotify to do so at this juncture with Tidal taking Roon's entire market because of hifi. that could change.

unfortunately audiophiles aren't a real market for the big guys - 30k US hifi subs at Tidal pretty much suggests that.

bump.

Sorry for being selfish. I need to decide by the end of the weekend to buy the Nucleus + or the Innuos (because my MSB Premier is being delivered mid-late July and it will be a 2-3 week delivery time for the Innuos). I am leaning quite heavily towards Innuos (the first time I have deviated from Mike’s recommendation - so I am nervous 😁). Does anyone think I am making a mistake or am I dancing in the margins?
