Lumin Network Audiophile Music Player

Thanks for the compliment, but my head hurts just as much. I started a thread over at Computer Audiophile, and also here, on best bets for a one box solution (pre packaged, software/hardware optimized, ripper, storage and playback in one box) and continue to read everything I can, but nothing is conclusive. I'm just so tired of researching and will pull the trigger soon on either a Musica Pristina, Baetis, or Music Vault. I may also try to get a used BADA USB to spdif converter as well to see for myself if this makes a significant difference.

Jeff, I am waiting to see what I see out at CES next week, but the Baetis looks pretty spiffy to me. It would be interesting to hear their non usb SPDIF Bnc dig connection that comes right off the motherboard with no sound card. I like the look of their stuff. I have been emailing with Baetis and they have some interesting things going on.

Hans, the Devialet is also a class A/D POWER amp as well as a Dac/streamer/preamp (truly 1 box). It does not do DSD though. The Wadia Intuition is the same but its Class D+.

Bob, yes, the Baetis looks spiffy, as does the Music Vault and the Memory Player. Not too sure where the Aurenders fit in.

This post is for those, LIKE ME, that have been holding out at jumping completely into the ca stuff.....not for those who already are enjoying ca.

It all makes my head spin. At last year's NY Audio show in the Vivid room we had Philip O'hanlon's pc using dsd64 and dsd128 files and they sounded really good, but for some reason it did not stick with me at that moment. I sort of "ignored" the ca and did stream the Linn radio stations but I never really heard the dsd stuff in my room.....UNTIL the other day when Norman visited and brought the dsd stuff with him. It has really changed my perception on really everything. I am now in the "gathering info" mode and with CES it could not have happened at a better time.

I would say to anyone that doesn't want to mess with ca, like me for instance, somehow get someone to bring over a pc with a dsd dac if at all possible and listen to some DSD64 and especially dsd128 files on your own system that you are familiar with.....imho, this is a "game changer". And I know it's been doing this for several years now, but until I heard it in my room, it all seemed too daunting of a task. But once you hear what is possible, then the task of getting a ca set up, loses that "daunting perspective". Heck just get an inexpensive dac that will pass dsd files, dowload Foobar for free, connect your pc to the Dac and enjoy!

I know that many (Trinity, Total Dac and many others) don't even feel the need for dsd and I know those non dsd dac's are probably incredible, BUT you have to spend big $$$ to get their sound.....not so many $$$ with the Total Dac as the Trinity...... but there are a ton of inexpensive dsd cabpable dac's out there. Here is a review of several of them Three New DSD-Capable DACs | The Absolute Sound Just get one of these dac's, several have 30 day returns, connect it up with your pc and a good USB cable and take a listen to some dsd128 stuff.

To punch with the big Boys of DSD for MUCH less $$$, I recommend the Lampi DSD-Only Dac with Deulund signal caps. Its basically a tubed DSD filter box with no DSP processing, so pure tube circuit. I use mine with Tungsram ECC40 tubes and TungSol 6x5 rectifier tube abd Synergistic Research Quantum fuse. Swiss cables Power cord.

Delightful music machine.

I got word today that Cary is coming out with a DSD compatible streamer at CES. Will check it out next week.

Did you see that the Auralic guys are coming out with the Aries for $1000? It basically turns your legacy Dac to a DSD128/DXD capable WIFI streamer!!!! Yes, if the legacy Dac has DoP over USB, you are golden. If only SPDif available, then it will do up to 24/192.

Very exciting development, as you can keep you favourite Dac in the chain. It works over Ethernet too.

Johnny Darko broke the news on his site.

Anybody know why no DSD x2 or 128? Is it a hardware or software issue which can be updated at a future date? Thx for any info.

For what? The Lumin? If Lumin, I'm unsure. There are so few titles (like 6!) on DSD128 right now, that it isn't a big issue. I will talk to the folks at Lumin next week at CES.

Interesting and informative read. I like the style too. Thanks.
Would it be possible that you use a (small) usb stick loaded with a few dsf files for playing/evaluating DSD performance?

Norman,
I think you are replying to another post in another thread right? Anyhow I think the difference outside the DSP is that the Devialet is a fully integrated amp and not 'just' a pre-amp. I am not sure if you can use the device as a pre-amp only. The specs mention only a subwoofer out with cut-off frequency. If you can cancel the cut-off it woud work as a pre-out as well of course.

That is a valid point Mike. But quite frankly that is my point for DSD generally. How many native DSD recordings are available totally? And how many do fit my musical taste? I might be wrong but I don't think it is a big number. As I understand most of the SACD's are converted PCM files. This could change over time as recording/mastering studios start working with DSD128.

THnX. When we tested Lumin the firmware was in early stadium, so even USB port were inactive. :-(

OK...I'm strongly considering a Lumin. But first I need to get a handle on the whole NAS/Minimserver/Control Point issue.

I've got a Synology NAS that's been feeding my dedicated MacMini. I recently managed to get Minimserver and Java installed on it (without even getting my IT guy's help!) and I've been playing around with a Sonore Rendu streamer (ethernet-->SPDIF) using the PlugPay iPad app as the control point.

Only about a third of my album artwork shows up in PlugPlayer. I downloaded the Lumin app just to see how it looks--much better than PulgPlayer. Scanned my library and same thing--lots of artwork missing.

From what I gather these programs first look for artwork in JPEG format embedded within the audio file. Then it's kind of murky to me as to what the program does next to try to find artwork.

Part of what's keeping me with iTunes and away from a server/renderer is this whole issue with music files and album art. I'm basically lazy when it comes to managing my files/metadata and don't want to have to spend time messing around with them.

So the question is...how can I (EASILY!) get things in order on my NAS with MinimServer so everything shows up as it should using these control point programs? What needs to be done when ripping/downloading new music?

I used a program called Image Fetch to get the artwork from iTunes and put it in a folder.jpg file in the directory with the album. It worked pretty easily. Then the UPNP server (miniserver) will find the artwork.

That looks pretty good for missing art etc.

Just to be clear - Image Fetch does not research the net or anything. It only takes the album art in iTunes and puts it in a jpeg.

Jock - is this from the iTunes online directory or just from your own personal iTunes? Missing artwork is become a problem for a lot of people.

Personal iTunes. It doesn't go out to the internet at all.

Here is the author's description ----

Image Fetch will scan the iTunes Library fetching all artwork (via iTunes) and create a folder.jpg automatically for you. This is useful for users of Twonky Media Server. This can also be used to “Refresh” (overwrite) your current Artwork files when using the in-built ChorusDS Server. The server does not overwrite any current artwork files. Image fetch creates jpeg artwork files 512x512 pixels.

Thanks for the suggestion Jock!

Sounds like just what I need, as I've got all the artwork in my iTunes library and know what to do on iTunes do get missing artwork into iTunes. It's just getting MinimServer to find/display it.
