JOB 225 2-channel Power Amplifier ... update ...

Mike

The wife still doesn't understand why I need 9 pairs of speakers sitting around. As a lifelong pianist she loves music and the hobby to a point especially vinyl, but doesn't get why we need "extras." If she was at Joe's her head would explode.

It's like when you were a kid....one toy is no fun!

Hi guys,

quick update and a question. The Job is still sounding fantastic, can't wait to try better power cords etc. As I stated the last time, the soundstage and air is really impressive, also particularly the vertical soundstage.

As for the question, since I'm now using my integrated as a pre-amp, do you know when the pre-amp from Job is planned? Are we talking beginning of 2014 or the end of 2014? I don't know if I can handle the late 2014

I don't think even they know for sure, but its definitely 2014 and my guess would be mid year…i.e. June.

Thanks Wisnon! That's gonna be a long wait :) Maybe I'll look to upgrade my metrum octave for a pre-amp/dac combo...

Newbie,

Antelope Platinum (with DSD256) and Lampizator L4 with Preamp function should fit your bill. they are both analog attenuators.

Thanks for the suggestions. I also saw the other thread here about pre-amps. The thing is that these dac's/pre-amps are out of my range price-wise. I'll search the web a bit but won't do anything before getting advice here :D

Jack,

That looks like a great buy for the money....(but is the Dac equal or better than the Metrum you have?)

Wisnon

I would think that if newbie79's outboard DAC is better than the Sabre he could just bypass it and use his own. I am not a "digital music guy" except on my Ipod for running/walking so I don't really know. All of Peachtree's gear seems to get "rave" reviews for what that is worth. Another option since some people have said that the gain on the JOB amp is high is to use a passive like the Bent, Tortuga or others. I won't get mine until tomorrow so I can't speak to the "high gain" issue yet.

Yes Jack,

I see what you are saying and can agree here. The Metrum is a good Dac and he likes it a lot. Perhaps if he can do without a remote control, the iFiAudio iTube (circa €300) may be a very cost effective option that could still be used when a more accomplished and capable preamp is acquired. See feedback here from another forum:

I bought the iFi iTube recently to try as I need more gain in my system as some of my tube amps have fairly low gain (a 6c33c se and a direct coupled 71a DHT amp) eventhough my speaker has 100db efficiency. I like to use TVC to control volume as I find many active tube pre either adding too much coloration or hightening treble too much. I like the organic and neutral sound of TVC (a Django transformer volume control). It has a +6db gain switch from the winding but I never like it, thought it makes the sound brighter and more mid forward at certain frequency. I was attracted by the iTube because of the price and also its other extra functions (3D holographic circuit and Digital Antidote) and that it can be configured by dip switch as 6db gain buffer only with the volume pot bypassed.

For people who are using Virtue ONe/Two which is too small to install a Dodd's buffer stage inside the case, the iFi iTube is a very cost effective addition. It comes from the same designers that make the rather expensive AMR brands of gear.

Hi guys, how long does it take for the Job to arrive after placing an order?

@wisnon have you received yours yet?

Mick, I have not ordered one yet! Not until next year at the earliest...
As I live 5mins drive from their offices, ddelivery is not an isue for me...I would just pick it up.

It takes 4-5 working days for Australia and less in other places.

Wisnon, I've never heard of the ifi tube. I'll definitely do some research on it. Thanks!

Well, my JOB showed up this morning shortly after 9am and is hooked up, turned on and waiting for a longer test run later this evening. For now decided to run it for a while without the Vandersteen subs and just the little Pioneer SP-BS41's on their own. Don't have the right fixed value crossover for this amp anyway until I can order them from John Rutan at Audio Connection. Will test with the variable supplied crossover box this weekend. Only had time this morning to listen to two sides of my "go to" test disc, Ray Brown's Soular Energy THE RAY BROWN TRIO SOULAR ENERGY #D LTD ED 180g 2LP (BLACK)-Elusive Disc and was impressed with both the amp and what the little Pioneer's could do. Was surprised to say the least at how low they could go and keep up with Brown's stand-up bass work. They only have about 30hrs on them so far and should only get better.
