D3's on snappers

Brian,

I'm a sucker for harp guitars:) Michael Hedges was really something with a hg. The guy now that is definitely one of the best and probably best harp guitarist in the world is Stephen Bennett Stephen Bennett - Official Website Check out Stephen playing on the YouTube channel off of his site....quite something.

Thanks for the pointer. I checked out the vids. All a bit slow for me but very nice music.

The pics and now listening to SB take me back to an old VHS tape I have of Michael Hedges and Shadowfax concert. MH plays the HG and also has the drummer from Shadowfax play along, then MH comes out and plays with Shadowfax. I'm going to have to dig that out and watch it again as it is great old footage.

Yes, MH was really something....one of my all time favorites.....Ariel Boundaries!

As originally discovered by David and then Bob, I put a slab of granite under the D3's tonight. 20 x 22 x 1 1/8 thick. This minimizes the energy which the speaker creates which goes into the room and then back into the speaker - repeating many times a second. Bass is certainly softer (but after 450 hours - bass was excellent). For those who have a bit too much bass - the granite trick really works.

Looks great Mike....all I can say is thank you to Dave for trying this and you Mike for taking the pic at RMAF. I just noticed it there and it has literally transformed my entire D3 experience. Additionally I found that the specification sheet on the D3 page on the Raidho site had the D3's listed at 3.9 ohms, which I found out yesterday with Lars that it was a typo. The D3's are around 6ohms. My D3's measure 6.6 ohms, not sure how accurate my meter is as now the specification sheet shows 5.8 on the Raidho site. Anyway, when it showed 3.9 ohms I was always using the 4 ohm taps on my Absolare amps. Now changing that AND the marble bases....all I can say, and a few people have heard it now as well and they had the same reaction....OMG, it's a totally different D3 experience.

I really think that the marble bases will be floor type dependent. For me it was a night and day experience.:audiophile::exciting:

Bob, my dealer David Baskin, was the first to do this. That's where Mike and I first saw it !!

Mark, please give David a BIG THANK YOU from me. It's funny I was using granite and marble slabs like this back in the 80's with my first pair of Watt/puppies and then I 've used platforms of some sort or another ie, Symposium platforms, over the years with different speakers, but it never dawned on me to try it on the D3's......DuH:audiophile: Again big thx to David and then for Mike's great camera work picking it up at RMAF. Another AS success story:woot:

It's interesting in that under my D1s I didn't like the granite as well as just the stand on the carpet. But with the D3s I put them under them almost immediately after getting them and never looked back. Definitely a must try.

BTW - Ceramic tile is 90% of using granite and a lot easier to get to try it out.

Jock, what are your thoughts on say 1/2 ceramic tile vs. 1/2" granite vs 1" + marble etc. I wonder if they all would sound a little different or if any type of hard surfaced tile would work? Thoughts?

I'm not totally sure. But I'm have a couple 3 centimeter granite slabs made, so once I get them I'll be able to test them out.

I tried a couple of 2" butcher blocks first. Then I had some ceramic tiles laying around so I tried them. Then I went with some granite tiles 5/16". I also have mass loaded the tile with some old Accoustic Balists that I had laying around.

Each was an inprovment.

Mike, where did you buy your marble slabs? Love the way they look!
