i figure eventually he"ll have to put me to work. especially when i start getting my mail sent there

I guess you had a good audition at Bob's today?!:P
just me and Bob today, what a great time too!!! hey congrats on 1000 posts Allen!!!!

we started the day with absolare SET amps on soundkaos wave 40's. what a perfect match!! it was likethe speakers and amps were made for each other. it gave me the opportunity to hear the amps being use the way they were meant to be and not being pushed too hard. they are outstanding and it almost takes the emotion of tubes to another level!!! anyone interested in perfect sound must go see Bob.lol.

but i hate to say it(not really i love it) the star of the day in a room full of $100k gear, was my little snappers.lmao!!!!!!! see pic below as the size difference in amps.
the d3's sung the way they were supposed to, and had plenty of power left. i rang my iphone decibel meter to 103db!! no popping no graininess, just sweet sweet music. anything above that volume level we were testing at today would be uncomfortable to listen to and not fair for speakers to try to go that loud.
buuuut on the d1's they really made me see how good these raidhos can be. they were flawless together, again like the d1 and snappers were made for each other.
from louie armstrong, to ella, to joni mitchell, maria muldaur. and especially the eric clapton unplugged 180g. holy cow was that good, we played it with all 3 pairs of raidhos.
the c1.1 were right there as well, anything the d1's can do the c1.1 can do . but with a hair less low end . seems when the d1's need to go down and get some bass they always find it.
i frickin love those things!!!!!! anyone wanna lend me some $$$ hehehehe!!!
oh btw Bob was nice enough to lend me an awesome froggy bottom guitar. if anyone knows anything about them and their value, it was very trusting of him, and i appreciate it!!!!

oh just out of curiosity does anyone like my new $100k ampstands?
see pic below.lmao!!!

on that note, time to go check out mikes million pic rmaf thread

Steve,

Thanks for the write-up. Well done! I'd love to hear the Wave 40's. I am sure they are wonderful.

Sounds like you guys had a great day and were able to put some things together that work better.
So tell us more about the Wave 40's. How did they look in person? Do you think they worked good in the room or needed bigger/smaller size? What about bass extension, decent? I can't wait to hear them in person!!!

Oh god Doug. They had the biggest woofer in the room. Well that we heard at least .
It was great tight bass but nice and deep . The whole sound kinda grabs you.
The snappers on the waves were very nice too, and if you told me I'd be stuck with snappers and wave40's for the rest of my life, I'd be ok with it. But it didn't have the depth and intimacy of SET amps. They are real nicely crafted too, a lot less like a canoe in person. And they probably don't even float :) And you can tell the shape and the waves perfectly sanded into the wood are all there for a reason.
The soundstage was big and deep and separation was awesome. Now finding SETs that I can afford that come close to the absolare is gonna be a tough chore.

Steve,

I commend you for having great taste. You got me thinking.

Me too Joe me too  I noticed bobs raidho collection has grown. There was an extra pair of black d1's there. I was guessing it was because he missed my birthday but no such luck hahaha!!! I like the black ones better :)

Thanks Steve. Nice critique of the Waves. I finally got your 100k amp stand remark! ;) haha!!! Actually I think those amp stands were $100k each new.lmao!!!

Help, help, Steve locked me in my closet and he stayed all night long at my studio. I hear him playing all of the guitars, sometimes two at once and he has all of the Raidhos (C1.1's, D1's and D3's) and Wave speakers and I think the Goldmund speakers as well connected in parallel driven by his snappers.....help, help, let me out of the closet

Ha! Too funny Bob. Thank you for hosting Steve. He wants me to hear the Wave 40's. I want to hear them too. If you really are locked in the closet, I'll be right there. :) after I load my car for the trip home.

Wow that's tough Mark. All 3 raidhos performed well with the 100 tube watts.
But I still find it hard to fathom that the best amp for a $70k speaker is a pair of amps I bought used for $4k. Lmao!!! I still think the d1's are the best speakers of the bunch!!! And not as finicky and hard to figure out like the d3.

Thanks again Bob. ;)

You are welcome Steve....really had a great time all day yesterday. You won't believe the difference per my other posts over in Mike's RMAF thread, about the granite slabs that I saw in Mike's pics. I put slabs underneath the D3's this morning and they are like a different speaker. I have them running with the Telos 280 to the same levels that we were listening to yesterday (peaks of 102-103db) and they sound great at that level with not only no issues, but the bass is clear, clean and textured and seems to go a little lower as well.

The interaction of my floor and the D3's was my issue, it's so clear after listening to the D3's now. You can tell in an instant.....different speaker.:exciting:

Steve.....good reason to come back;)

I have made a personally startling discovery with my D3's. I had been struggling with getting both the bass like I wanted it as well as a totally open and relaxed sound. I had been trying to do all this with Goldmund amps, Merrill Class D amps and the Absolare amps. I was using the Absolare amps on the D3's with the 4 ohm taps With the Absolare amps I was not getting the "air" around the instruments and voices and as I have stated in several places I was struggling to get the bass to my liking in my room.

I have made TWO changes in my system that literally have shocked me. The first change was that I put a granite slab underneath the D3's. For some reason the D3's definitely do NOT like my flooring, which is in a commercial NYC building. The floors are a porous slurry mix, not really that solid like actual cement. Anyway putting the granite slabs under the D3's transformed the bass. Where I was getting "too much bass" vs. the rest of the frequency spectrum now has turned into just the right amount of bass and does not stick out at all. Even after 1000 hours I was getting too much bass....not anymore, the bass is great.

Second change is what really surprised me. Just for the heck of it, I connected the D3's to the 8 ohm taps of the Absolare SETs. I still can't believe what has happened. The entire frequency spectrum just opened up with gobs of "air" around the voices and instruments. AND the best part is the bass is totally seamless now, never calling attention to itself other than to hit all bass notes appropriately with texture and authority as well.

I never would have thought of trying the 8 ohm taps from the Absolare amps as the D3's are listed as 3.9 ohms. I just would not have ever thought of it although for 40 years now with tube amps I have always tried both the 4 ohm and 8 ohm taps if they were available on a tube amp just to make sure I was getting optimum performance from both the amp and the speakers. Again, this one mystifies me, BUT I can tell you that if you could hear the D3' s with the Absolare amps now running off the 8 ohm taps you would be amazed at the sound. Like they say "Ya never know".

Hi Bob,

That's great. It's true, things that I dismiss because I think it will not work or I don't even think to try it usually end up being better in the long run. I am so glad and I need to hear them again!
