Playing one of my favorites again: Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli - Haydn Piano Concertos in D & G

This time with the new Phoenix Engineering PSU and Tach. I'm really enjoying how important speed accuracy of a turntable is with playback of piano. Appears that timbre and realism of the piano is better with these controllers in place.

decca - supreme stereophonic legacy 4-cd box set, with Larry's book :), arriving tomorrow.
excited!

Chris, hope you enjoy it. Michael Bishop and Robert Friedrich did a great job in remastering the music, under the watchful eyes and ears of Winston Ma. And I had lots of fun interviewing the Decca engineers. Larry

Chris, Larry's book a a lot of fun to read, and very informative. Enjoy it like I do!

Box set arrived today. Just cracked the book and am immediately impressed. This will be a decca classical education for me.
Will have a listen to the first of the four discs tomorrow.

Brahms Piano Cto No.2 , Haitink, Arrau, Concertgebouw Orchestra - Philips 6882 005 :

(need to run this thru another cleaning cycle to see if some of the light clicks can be remedied....though it could be the 15% humidity in my room tonight)

Mozart Violin Concertos No.1 in B flat major K.207 and No.4 in D major K.218 - Grumiaux, Davis and LSO - Philips 835 136 AY:

This LP is so incredibly beautiful. The playing and the sonic quality (and composition) are all spectacular IMO.

I picked this up just for fun, not knowing what's on here or how well recorded. Holy cow, great LP with great sonics! A little brighter compared to other SDs I own, but damn, pretty good for 12 bucks! And a 1s/1s to boot! :audiophile:

Allen,
Love the cover! Great artwork for an audiophile's wall :)

It is nice, Chris. Would be nice if it was shiny and newer like the pic, but it's a fun cover. One of the things that drew me to the LP. Good music and sonics to boot!

Mike, you've been spinning Philips a bit lately. Good vinyl/pressing in general?

Hi Allen,

I find the 70's and 80's Philips, Decca and London ffrr in particular to be a good balance of great sound (dynamics + silent backgrounds) and decent price. Sure, there are better sounding modern pressings from other labels but the price of many of these generally prohibits me from buying all but the most attractive or popular audiophile ones. Buying into used (NM) Philips, Decca and London pressings @ $7-$10ea allows me to take a chance on music I'm unfamiliar with or otherwise wouldn't dare spend big money to acquire and try.

Finally a break from work. Audiophile soundtrack night tonight. Just finished playing Glory (amazing!) and now spinning this (well, maybe not the soundtrack..., but music inspired by)

Re: Rotating now | And very relaxing ::

I listen to Shostakovitch's Violin Concerto No. 1, Op. 99 tonight; certainly one of the great works of that repertoire. In particular the extended violin part in the 3rd movement is very beautiful.

was it the 180g LP? I have the RBCD and its been one of my reference discs since its release, the music and SQ are just about flawless.

I heard a ripped version playing through a Pacific Microsonics DAC on the Magico S7s. I rarely get involved into the music at shows (it's a more cerebral event), but this one stopped me in my tracks. I'm spinning an original issue above. Beautiful music, beautiful vocals, beautiful sonics.

Been using this since around 2000 or so for voicing. It was recorded back when CD recordings were supposedly unlistenable... :)
