Listening to . . . . Beethoven -Symphony No. 7

Berlin Philharmonic - Herbert von Karajan, Conductot

A Deutsche Grammophon LP - Recorded in March 1966 and a winner of the Grand Prix Du Disque - Paris in that same year.

Way back in the olden days, Deutsche Grammophon really produced some amazingly good recordings and this is definitely one of the better members of that crop. Extremely well played and the original DG pressing (big tulips) is very quiet and extremely dynamic.

And, since, in my very occluded, and often shot-down, opinion, the very oldest stereo recordings often sound "the best", I am playing a really, really old Vangard Stereo LP (their number SRV -13, which I'll bet is their 13th stereo recording . . . or at least the cover looks like it should be). . .

Recorded in 1959 as a demonstration record.

Listening to . . . Khachaturian - Suite from Gayne
Kabalevsky - Suite - The Comedians

The Vienna State Opera Orchestra - Vladimir Golschmann, Conductor

Amazing sound, imaging and soundstage. Very good pressing by Vangard.

Actually the Karajan Beethoven set was released in 1962 (I bought the box my freshman year in college in the fall of 1963). It is a fine set. Many think it is better than the 1978 set he did, again with the BPO. It may be that individual records from the set were issued later (like 1966). DGG Big tulip labels were usually better than their small tulip reissues.

This is a great album. The Vanguard Stereolab series was especially released as sonic spectaculars. When Barclay-Crocker started their releases of reel to reel tapes back in the late 70's, they picked albums which were sonically excellent to superb. They had quite a few Vanguard releases, including this one. The catalogue number for the Barclay Crocker release is 207, not 113. I checked my record collection and I have both a Vanguard 207SD and the SRV-113SD for this issue. Looks like the 113SD is the first release and the 207SD came out in 1966 as part of their lower priced Everyman series.

The Ansermet Falla is a great album. It was one of the 17 Decca albums that Winston Ma chose to remaster from the original tapes and release in the mid 2000's with Paul Stubblebine doing the remastering. I've included my three versions of this. I have a London issue, but it is not an early pressing. The Decca reissue is by Esoteric (Teac), so has the Japanese obi like sleeve. And the third is Winston's FIM CD release.

Winston also included a large 14 minute excerpt from the album in the 4 CD's included in my Decca book. The great Spanish mezzo soprano Teresa Berganza sings the solo.

An excerpt from my book "Decca: Supreme Stereophonic Legacy." (p.63 of the second book containing the 4 CD's and liner notes)
"Ansermet conducted the Ballets Russe from 1915 to 1923, during the time Falla's Three Cornered Hat premiered in London. Falla had begun rehearsals for the ballet, but the music was so complex that he handed the baton to Ansermet after the first rehearsal. Ansermet went on to conduct the premiere performance in 1919."

I was considering purchasing the 45rpm ORG reissue, as claims of the sonics were phenomenal . Can anyone confirm?

Larry, love the little anecdotes sprinkled throughout the book. A great read!

I've seen the Esoteric go for $1,000 on ebay. Crazy!

Hi groovy,

I don't have any other recording to compare this too, but to my ears, great sense of dynamics and soundstage. It's not as warm sounding as some of my other LPs (Dean Martin, Shelby Lynn, etc), but a great sense of space. Quiet pressing. I'm happy with it.

Maybe others will chime in as well.

Allen, thanks. It was fun researching the book. Many were even stories from the engineers who were there - obviously not Ansermet in 1919! Didn't realize the Esoteric had gotten into the stratosphere. I paid retail when it first came out, maybe $50, $60 or so, don't remember exactly. The London pressing I think I paid around $10-15 used. Some of the early Decca SXL, EMI ASD and EMI SAX are really insane - $1000 or $2000 for the rarest. I have a few of them. My biggest find was a nice copy of EMI ASD493 (Bruckner 9 with Schuricht) which I bought used for $15. It now sells for around 100 times that price.

First time spinning this.

Allen, the original release was a long time resident of HP's TAS SuperDisc list on vinyl. 2 record set at 45RPM. Very spectacular sonics. I pulled out my copy of the vinyl. It says this was a coproduction with Varese-Sarabande and was recorded simultaneously on Keith Johnson's special focused gap tape recorder in analogue and in the Soundstream Digital system (shown on your CD cover). Varese-Sarabande released the album on a one disc 33RPM album using the digital master. while the RR vinyl release was from the analogue. The Symphonie Fantastique is most famous to audiophiles for the spectacular last two movements - the March to the Scaffold and Dream of a Witches' Sabbath. Reference's vinyl release duplicates those two movements on both sides 3 and 4 of the album - in case you wear out one of the sides playing for your audiophile buddies and your neighbors next door! They also warn not to start playing those movements too loud until you find out how loud your system plays the peak sound levels. They "cannot be held responsible for any damage caused by overdriven amplifiers or speaker elements."

Larry

PS. Generally agreed that the sonics win over the performance.
