Bashing...

I just remember the meaning of bashing:

To criticize (another) harshly, accusatorially, and threateningly

To engage in harsh, accusatory, threatening criticism.

A person that seems to enjoy bashing in my book as always been arrogant and insensitive, begging for attention, wants to prove their superiority and just plain old rude.

Reasons to bash someone:

Bullying
Boredom
Mistaken Identity
Misinformation
Existing Rivalry
Baiting
Mob Mentality
Moral Differences
Ageism

Intolerance
Revenge
Vigilantiism
Righting a Wrong
Need for Attention
Need for a Boost of Self Confidence
Deflecting Attention/Creating a Diversion
Hysteria
Misguided Enthusiasm
Hurt Feelings
Immaturity
Two Wrongs...
Bad Day
Ease of Doing So Behind These Anonymous Masks
Joking
Harrassment

Debate
Randomness
Crap & Giggles

Isn't your intro statement a tube/analog bash? You blew your argument right there.

If you point out bashing, then you are bashing and therefore you have no point? Yep, makes good sense. Are you in congress by any chance?

People bash out of knowledge or ignorance. For instance, if you had a neighbor with a 1950s TV set with rabbit ears and he tried to tell you that his picture was better than your SOTA HD set, you might find yourself wanting to bash his beliefs. Some people gave up on analog in the 1980s and got rid of their cheap table and $15 Grado cartridge and stuck all of their warped LPs that they never knew how to keep clean in a closet in their basement so the mold could attack them. Some of these people come on audio sites and proclaim how superior digital sounds to the recollections of their old, crappy LP rig and then wonder why people bash them. Some people have never owned an LP rig and yet they come on audio forums and bash analog based on looking at their digital spec sheets.

Some people own both digital and analog rigs and try and stay current with both technologies so they can understand where each is at and enjoy both for what they do. This allows you to formulate opinions on how the two sound different one from another and talk about that based on current experience and not based on memories from the 1980s.

Why do Tube lovers consistenly bash solid state and why do vinyl lovers consistenly bash digital?

Its common and almost entirely in one direction.

Could it it be simply due to insecurity since science and measurements are overwhelmingly on the side of solid state and digital? Or are there other motivations?

Wait, let me get this straight. You are criticizing tube people for doing EXACTLY what you are doing in this thread you started. The sad part is you don't even see it.

This is bashing: "Could it it be simply due to insecurity since science and measurements are overwhelmingly on the side of solid state and digital? Or are there other motivations?"

To me you're just dithering.

To be honest, it's almost totally the other way around. Go to any other website and it's always the digital people who jump down turntable owner's throats calling their gear obsolete and don't believe your ears, just stare into my laser and recite after me I am perfect. Interestingly not so much for solid-state gear owners. in reality, the tube and analog guys are quite happy with their rigs.

That's certainly not been my experience at all. And I don't even have a dog in this race. I LIKE tubes. I've used tubed gear in my system many times. But I don't see solid state guys posting stuff like "Solid State RULES!" and "Nothing sounds like Digital!!!!". But I see this ALL THE TIME from tube and vinyl guys. So what are they saying when they say "TUBES RULE!!!". They are saying it's way better than the alternative. What's the alternative???? Oh yeah, solid state.

And here's a real world example from this site. The following is in a regular poster's sig: “Most solid-state amps are like frozen food—the texture is destroyed. ” - Stereophile.

Would you call that bashing? What is the point of this quote? I don't feel the need to put this in my sig: "Whatever vacuum tubes can do in a piece of audio equipment, solid-state devices can do better, at lower cost, with greater reliability." - The Audio Critic

As to the point about whether or not I was bashing in the original post, I was not intentionally bashing. I THOUGHT it was common knowledge that solid state measures better than tubes and that digital measures better than vinyl. Every article I've read on that subject seems to be in agreement on that point. Therefore, stating a fact isn't bashing.

What you're saying is that one doesn't have to win for the other to lose?

There was a very nice member who visited me today. We went from the Kronos to the Lumin and back and forth and back and forth. I think its fair to say he loved both equally....as do I.

And let's face it - the "bashing" isn't limited to just tube vs SS and vinyl vs digital....you can throw in the DSP vs no DSP, subs vs no subs, copper vs silver and so much.

As I said....it all depends.

It is common knowledge that SS measures better than tubes in many areas that are commonly measured. However, are you saying that if something measures better it therefore sounds better? That is the rub and the cause of many food fights.

I think the OP needs to get out more, visit more audio sites. There is plenty of bashing on many, most of them. I think birds of a feather ... , so a particular site is populated by people who have the same perspectives and they will be bashing opposing perspectives.

I thought AS was going to be different - that is why many of us moved here from other sites. Until this post, I thought AS members have been quite polite and accepting, or at least tolerant, of views that differ from theirs. I hope it is not too late to head back in that direction.

True.

I also think people bash out of insecurity over their gear, and hear bashing when it really isn't there because of that same insecurity...:dunno:

OMG, really? How delicate are your sensibilities? There is a difference between a spirited discussion and rudeness or personal attacks. I was just trying to understand the need for vinyl and tube people to champion there preference so vocally including deriding the alternatives.

My First post could be misinterpreted as insulting to tube and vinyl lovers, I get that, but it was really meant as an honest theory to explain the behavior I've witnessed. i can see how a person who has settled on tubes or vinyl might truly feel threatened and defensive given the solid state and digital people typically have the scientific community confirming the superiority of their chosen technology. Again, not meant as a bashing of vinyl or tubes, just stating what appears to me to be accepted facts.

I think this site is different, with many of the positive attributes you mentioned. I don't think this thread (more the topic, actually) is particularly representative of the generally supportive vibe associated with the majority of the users and directors.

i am absolutely NOT saying that. I don't think a linear correlation between measurements and musical enjoyment can be made. I do think that gear that measures better is more likely to sound better than one that does not but I have no doubt that there are many exceptions. Additionally "sounds better" cannot be measured and is wildly different depending on the listener.

But, with that said, I will say DIGITAL RULES!!!!!!!!!!

Perhaps that is your insecurity speaking.
