I am a happy owner of an Audio Research VS-110. A very surprising amp as it is very dynamic yet sweet in the mid's and highs and with tight bass. Much more powerful than its rated 100 watts per channel.

Put it this way, I have yet to run out of amp driving my Magnepan 2.5's. The detail is all there as is the soundstage and feel.

What about you?

I love ARC gear as well. After trying out a number a DACs I ended up with their DAC8. It gave me just what I was looking for with my system. I'm seeing more of their pieces in my house in the future...

Mike, The CD9 wasn't quite out yet when I first listened to the DAC8. I haven't owned a CD player in many, many years but I really like the idea of having a transport and DAC in one unit, which the CD9 has. (and it's more than just a transport I'm sure) I know many people would scoff at the idea saying how the digital side of things is being advanced so rapidly these days, but if you're good with redbook and Hi-res files I think something like this is perfect. You mentioned something in another thread about how you believe we are in the midst of an audio boom and I agree. In particular, I think ARC is putting out some great units these days that may be talked about for many years down the road.

Here is a review of the CD9:

I guess I am in the right place, even if I'm a lightweight compared to some here! I was a Marantz 9 owner and was worried that the VS-110 was a step backwards. While the Marantz's are legendary and for good reasons, the VS-110 is more revealing and a tad bit more dynamic without sacrificing the mid's and soundstage. I prefer the ARC over the Marantz as it pairs better with the Magnepan's. No wonder ARC & Magnepan had a long standing relationship.

Funny how things come together, must give some credit to the owner of Shelley's Stereo in Woodland Hill, CA., as sold me the ARC and is a long time Magnepan Dealer and told me that I was going to be happy with the pairing.

Hi Nelson:

I have a Bottlehead Foreplay II that has many tweaks.

It has pseudo dual mono power stage (PDMPS), each signal wire is shielded and has its own ground, done like they did on the Foreplay III , the volume controls are in shunt mode. It has a RRSF which is a filter to take any nasties out of the electricity coming from the wall. It uses Vishay-Dale resistors, which I think sound very good. It also has an IEC connector.

It does not have the attenuators or the constant current mod, but there is room for them, I don't feel the need for that mod as it is dead quiet. Oh yeah, it is set up for 6FQ7's instead of 12AU7's. The 6FQ7's are more linear and with a better soundstage.

Thanks,

Jim
