What are you watching?

I loved that movie, a great story and great imagination. Sadly when they remake these great features, Time Machine, Willie Wonka, Planet of the Apes, and so on, they have much better special effects, but the stories sag and there is a lack of imagination.

For example, why remake Planet of the Apes if you can't come up with another hocking ending? Well, you can't so don't do it.

Let me take a moment to write a totally unfair review of the 1989 movie, Batman, which I just saw again over the weekend. It is totally unfair because I am writing it from today’s perspective, where special effects have taken over superhero movies and where they have evolved into their own special category.

Batman was done at a time when comic book heroes existed in a very campy, unreal world. While today’s world is still unreal it’s just not campy. The Marvel influence places unreal characters in a more real environment than Batman did. The first thing I noticed is that while Gotham City existed in a dreary color drained world, the characters themselves were incredibly colorful and actually reminded me of the Dick Tracy movie. Of course Batman just came up, almost magically, with toys, devices, airplanes out of nowhere. While the movie at first seem fun to me to watch I slowly became a bit bored and the movie became a bit painful at the end as I got to campy to be real and yet not abstract enough for me to consider it funny. It was always controversial that Michael Keaton would be Batman and now he just does not seem to be the person I would have chosen for the part. At the end he has to show superstrength and he just doesn’t seem to have it. I did enjoy this movie much more back then, but compared to Batman Begins, (and even Spider-Man) it just didn;t cut it for me anymore.

I would give the video, by today’s standards, on Blu-ray, a four because the picture is not as sharp as I would have preferred, however it could be the way it was shot. I would also give the sound of four out of five stars.

Twenty-five years ago ultra high-end audio wasn't where it is today either!

Looking at man's evolution through history one can truly see that he is not following the right path of the righteous.

Like I said; money is the leader, not great ideas as it should.

* Batman is a caricature on a t-shirt.

Enough Said was the last picture that James Gandofini (Tony Soprono) starred in. I saw it last night. It was a fine movie, but nothing special. it's one of those movies where you have to accept that people will do dumb things. Although it is billed as a comedy, I certainly didn't laugh much, but enjoyed the ride

Bob, please smile when you read this :)

I am so backed up with my writing a book with tremendous deadlines, watching movies (Many that you suggested); following the Yankees and watch the Star Trek Next Gen Blu Rays (new season out next week) that i am so wonderfully behind on everything. I got the Criterion The Thief on you suggestion, my brother got "Her" after you discussed it, but I am far behind it's amazing.

So I need you to hold the world in abeyance and have nothing new released until the end of the summer.

I'm already smiling even before I start reading your post. :)

* A good friend of mine is dying (cancer), and he's writing a movie/documentary script before he passes away (anytime now). ...Very hard to predict the end of a looking zombie (sad but true). ...And we're all gong to die too. ...And others are coming to this world brand new (newborns).

I totally understand on how one's life can take a turn one way or another, Barry.

Today is now, and where we all are @ this time in space is no accident; it's destiny. ...Life's pushing/pulling circumstances.

Last night ::

* Crazy, one more sad (depressive) side (poverty) of America, one very gut wrenching and useless/senseless killing, no love, no brain, no nothing but simple survival from a bunch of lower characters. ...Some of them with heart though; and that makes them with better/stronger values than many well educated and well financially calibrated ones from our higher echelon of our society.

Please don't watch this one with your better half (spouse, girlfriend, mistress, or daughter). ...It's tough, very tough, in particular that senseless killing scene. ...Violent. ...And ends in much more sadness than it first started with.

Nicolas (Cage) is a good actor, but as you all well know he is often bordering on the over-bordering, and he is no different here, particularly in that last scene; walking on that small bridge, and bleeding, in and out. ...His body language reflects his true character, in real life as well. ...Like Mel (Gibson)? ...No, and yes too.

That kid, Tye (Sheridan), was in that movie, 'Mud', with Matthew (McConaughey).
- I liked him more in 'Mud', and same for that film.

Anyway, I like watching Nick; not in all his flicks but a fair bunch of them.

I don't know Barry; I'll have to check but I don't believe so.

EDIT: 'Joe' (1970), starring Peter Boyle. ...No, not based on it.

* I almost never read any film reviews (perhaps 10% on the technical aspects); something I learned over the years.
...It helps me develop my own vision, my own critic. That goes back way back to my Art school years, and even before at elementary school when drawing and writing.
- I just had a quick look at the plot (review), and saw no reference on another movie or book that it was based on.
But a very quick look as I said.

The only reason that all my film picture covers contain a review (film and video and audio rating) is for you guys/gals. ...You are free to click on them; I don't expect of everyone to be like everyone.
What I say/said on my posts about films and music is my own opinion, and nobody else.
...Film value, emotional impact, stance of the moment, cinematography attributes, audio quality (composer music score). ...Plus few related life's facts that make me think and soul/heart/mind touching.
/// The Power of Cinema, and Music.

But you guys/gals already knew that; so I'm just reaffirming my collaboration here. ...Which is totally/freely open to all discussions, opinions, thoughts, etc.

And the gear? ...Good enough to transmit and receive the messages in my soul. ...As they were intended for our entertainment.
Because it is entertainment after all.

Bob, I take your comments seriously, I think you know that. I have seen, or plan to see, many of the movies you have discussed. Next week, I will get Season six of Star Trek the Next Generation. That's about thirty hours of viewing, but I have Her, the thief, Laura, and the incur edibles to catch up on. I love Laura and just got the blu ray. It is such a good film that I didn't care who did it at the end. I just love that we can see these films in our homes

Yes Barry, you told me couple times before and I thank you for that as it is a positive encouragement. ...I take my job seriously with fun. :)

And sorry that I'm in a period of movies watching; always was always will.
- Not everyone has couple hours every day to dedicate on movies (Blu-rays with hi-def vid. and hi-res multichannel aud.).
And not everyone is listening to music on average twelve hours every day, like I usually do.
There are few exceptions of course.

We do what we do, and what we like to do is the right thing to do.

* 'Laura' (1944); right on! ...Directed by Otto Preminger.
