What are you watching?

Last night I watched this, but fell asleep ::

* I'll give it another shot tonight, before I can report (equitably comment) on it.

But two things that jumped at me right away: Picture uses high contrast, and Audio is at a high level (too much dynamic volume).
I can tell that they were boosting both audio and video to create a larger impact. ...Does it work? ...In my book no.
This is a classic case that when it comes to movies there is no standard (same as music recordings). Paramount Pictures studios; shame on you. You might attract young audiences by hiring your staff doing the coloring, picture enhancement and sound design, but you are off track with the more intelligent audiences. You might say that I'm being too critical, and I would say that you are right.
And that's why I generally don't rely on technical reviews, even less on film merit (true value) from another reviewer.

...More to come, stay tuned for the final deployment; technically and movie value wise. ...Acting as well.

I finished watching 'Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit' last night from where I left off (sleeping).

Overall: Boring! ...Read the books instead, or watch the first three ones.

___________

Then I watched another Blu-ray movie ::

Lol, talk about playing with overboard! I like Liam; he's tall, convincing actor, articulate, energetic, but smarter roles would go a long way towards establishing a higher level of genuine credibility. ...But hey, this is Hollywood after all, and the show must go on (entertainment).

* The film industry is a business; they're into it for the money, same as the music industry.
The true Art form in Cinema and Music; you don't hear much about, you have to make the effort of exploring and discovering.

But entertained we sure are, and in many many many flavors, all sort of colors and taste and you name it; money related, or pure love related, our choice.
Freedom is great; it is the recipe for fulfillment, self-expression, happiness, and peace. ...And freedom is our fundamental human privilege, our access to life, our true passport to the garden of Eden; Earth.

- If you like action, up high in the air aboard a plane, with CGI, give it a spin and see how you react to it.

Here's a small (by Hollywood's standard) flick (chick flick) with depressive tones, but heart. Natalie Portman is superb.

Don't read the critics; they all got it wrong, follow your own heart, trust yourself, and don't be afraid of your own emotions and to show them to anyone.
I got something good out of it; you might too. ...One straight from the heart, even with much sadness. ...Realistic.

In the movie theatre this week I saw the movie “Chef” starring Jon Favreau, with more or less, “cameos” by Dustin Hoffman, Robert Downey, Scarlett Johansen and a few others. I delightful, fun to watch movie that had no bad guys, no villains. The only problem is that you really want to get something to eat during the movie, the cook segments are fantastic.

Which brings be to another movie I saw, on TV, on cable in 720p: “Return to Me.” This was a pleasant, but simple movie, that you could figure out the end within 20 minutes of watching the movie. But the cast, including David Ducovney, Bonnie Hunt, Jim Balushi and Carroll O’Conner were so fun to watch

My wife and I saw "The Fault in our Stars". It was a wonderful movie, sad, happy, with a splash or romance....but an emotional, moving experience. The lead actress should win an academy award.

It great that we can write about these thing here and get great support from other posters and not worry about judgmental people who do post on other sites.

I also saw, again, The Shawshank Redemption, a great movie on Blu-Ray. This is a movie I can see time and time again.

I hate buying Blu-Rays at top price, when they first come out, and seeing them only once, often because they are not good movie. For me, Pacific Rim is one of those. It’s a terrible, thoughtless and silly movie that I will not see again.

I have a “row” of movies in my cabinet like that. And it really bothers me. I try to see a movie, either in the theatre on even on cable before I decide to buy. Granted, 1080i and Dolby 5.1 doesn’t match 1080p and DTS no loss, but for many movies it is not an issue for me. For example, I did just see Cosmos as a weekly series, but probably will not want to watch it again for at least ten years. At that times a blu ray of it will be really cheap! J

I love the fact that after a while you can get bargains on Blu-Ray, so I will wait a bit. I know that I spent a fortune on my system and I don’t mind spending money on discs I like, but, and this may be a throwback to the days I was broke, I hate, hate throwing out money on movies, music and, frankly, books that just sit on the shelf. And yes, I have given a lot away.

So I had originally seen Shawshank in the theatre, later bought the DVD and then the Blu-Ray. I got the 3D of Pacific Rim so that my brother and I could see it together when he visited, we love those sort of movies. But now, I’ll see a blu ray movie using Redbox or see it on cable before I decide.

A final word on cable movies: They are a big step up from 480i, ¾, monaural for 15 years ago. I love the variety of movies, many I have never, ever heard of. I get to check them out and if I don’t like it, I move on. Sometimes I have “dvred” a movie and flipped to the end to see how it came out.

Barry, nowadays many many movies on Blu-ray are on sale; for only five bucks.
And you can get 3D ones for fifteen bucks; 'Prometheus', 'The Wolverine', 'Life of Pi', etc., just as few examples. In the US those can be had for only $10!
-> How much are you paying for a 45rpm vinyl? ...200gr, 33rpm one? ...For a music hybrid SACD? ...For a new hi-res audio download? ...Even a brand new CD (44/16 PCM) is between $10 and $20!

Ok, I won't do too much maths here; everyone's free to choose wisely according to his/her own lifestyle and personal level of happiness.

Yup, on DVD! :)

I don't think that I would be able to handle that! :D

That's why I prefer Blu-rays @ home; then I can eat anything I want! :)

I regret that I wasn't clear, I wrote, "I love the fact that after a while you can get bargains on Blu-Ray," I know you can get inexpensive discs, I just HATE buying them AT ANY PRICE and never wanting to see them again. For example i saw a very good and creepy movie with Robin Williams, "One Hour Photo!" I'll never see it again. But I paid $10 for the four original Batman movies, but I'll never see the last two again.

Barry, nothing to regret about; you were perfectly clear and I also read you perfectly clear.
I simply added to it from my additional perspective.

Life is beautiful; Dads, children, Moms, flowers, summer comin', movies, music, and all that jazz. :)
... 'A Love Song for Bobby Long' - great flick.

Dads, children, Moms, flowers, summer comin', movies, music, and all that jazz. :) I'm afraid that's not yet right. "All that Jazz" will be released by Criterion later this summer. :)
