What are you watching?

Revisited (in 3D), with friends; and they loved it! ...They never saw that flick before, and they liked the special effects, and the extra dimensional images.

My two guests wanted to see a 3D Blu-ray movie, but we didn't know which one till it was showtime.
So what I did is to simply enumerate some of my 3D titles till I said 'Prometheus'; then they asked me what it was because they never saw it. Bingo! ...I said, because it's Ridley Scott's prequel to 'Alien', a science-fiction flick.
Then the beautiful lady asked me if it was scary, I said no. They both enjoyed it.

I don't know much about the members here @ the Shark aquarium, but if you're into 3D and you did not see this flick yet, what are you waiting for. ...I'm pretty sure Barry saw it.

Pacific Rim was one of the worst and unoriginal movie I have ever seen. In 3D yet. Awful, awful awful!

Where's that kid in you Barry? :D

The movie itself, I agree; 'Nebraska' or 'Lawrence of Arabia' it ain't.
But the 3D picture and sound effects are quite technologically advanced, no? :)
And viewed on a big high def screen with a state-of-the-art surround sound system it has to rock!

Barry, are you a gamer?

I saw 'Prometheus'; in 3D

I thought it was terrible too! And Gory!!!!!!!

Prometheus, the opening scene was beautiful in 3D.
Then the entire movie nose dived into a bucket.
Uninspired, stupid and almost a comedy with traveling talking head.

Wow, tough crowd! :D

1. Gory? It's the prequel to 'Alien', the classic sci-fi from Sir Ridley Scott, with his gang.

2. Inside the alien ship there are some fantastic 3D special effects. ...In the main control/navigation room.

3. Did you guys ever tried to make your own movie? ;) ...I did myself once, @ school.
{Then we become better critics.}

________

Flicks are like chicks; some we like some we don't. :)

Bob, I am not a gamer. I do watch Baseball, which is more like a religion.

I agree with KING! But let me say this. I realize, more and more on this site, and the other that I am on, technology often rules. That is if the effects are great, if the LFE and bass are fantastic and the visuals are done right, people will like the movie (or the cd).

Not me. I have seen enough that I am no longer impressed by loudness, great visuals and such. I want a good story and a gpood plot with good writing and good actors.

So I will watch the original Wizard of Oz a zillion times and love it each time and forget about the new one in 3d. I love the Superman movie with Chris reeves, now with "dated" effects but with a great story and great acting and try to forget Man of Steel.

And I love American Hustle, where the only special effect is Christian Bale's hair.

But honest Bob, if you like those movies please watch them and let me know the good ones. But as for Pacific Rim and Prometheus:

a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage
And then is heard no more: it is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing.

We live in a different world than the one from the 20s and 30s. ...And cinema has lost its artistic etiquette (real genius actors replaced by Hollywood and Wall Street robots).

Frankly and personally, I've seen only one flick recently (made in this era; 2013-14) that grabbed my imagination from the heart, and it was 'Nebraska'.

I constantly readjust my film's critics in accordance to a balanced examination of all our senses.
I don't care about the Low Frequency Effect, and the amazing CGI effects. ...Except in animated flicks, like 'Despicable Me' or 'The Incredibles' or 'UP', where it supplements the great adventurous stories.

There is a myriad of viewers out there, from all ages and acquired taste. And even from the same gang, one film can one day be praised upon and the next sent to destructive oblivion.

Boredom is something we all want to escape. ...And that, is the true challenge. Because there isn't any absolute; but varied emotions from one day to the next. ...Consistency is now a prehistoric beast doomed to extinction.

Adapting to our inner-self is adapting to the outer-world. Is it good, or is it bad? None, it's a new technological experiment.

Today, we have to look deeper for films made for the human soul.
If I was going to post only the newer releases that fit that category, I would probably change my entire 'hobbit' (mojo, habit).
I can live by searching only the things that I consider of beneficial value, or I can live with all my surroundings.

I agree; 'Pacific Rim' has no soul, no value. ...Neither 'Prometheus', but they are the direct reflection of the world these directors live in. ...A technological world of abominable imagination (fiction), mixed with a financial recipe. ...Not a personal artistic creation, but a business venture/participation with the studios and the general public.
{'Prometheus'; I still prefer though, over 'Pacific Rim'.}

But then, what's new! True Art is not something that tries to be made known, to be in the public fora.
True Art is not something financially motivated, looking for fame. ...And that's why we have to dig much deeper for the unobtainable.

_________

Of all the Martin Scorseses, Ridley Scotts, Peter Jacksons, ...all of today's big movie directors'; which ones speak directly to our soul, in ways that are truly imaginative/cinematique artistry/poetry?
...Woody Allen? ...Steve McQueen, Michael Bay, Alfonso Cuaron, Robert Redford, Guillermo del Toro, ...?

A 2014 Oscar nominee for Best Documentary Feature, this film explores the work and marriage of Ushio and Noriko Shinohara, who took America's art scene by storm after leaving Japan for New York.

Definitely not Hollywood, and not going to be many people's favorite, but a very insightful film.

Alright, a love story in the big apple by two unusual Japanese artists.
...I wonder, ...the beautiful Japanese landscapes, gardens, trees, ...against the New York's backdrop of mortar, bricks and metal and glass, noisy city streets, and bright neon night lights.... ...A radioactive nuclear revolution, mixed with tremors? ...A walk in the park?

I'll definitely check it out.

My brother is a big fan of the mummy movies. So we just saw the movie the scorpion King. My brother had seen this on regular DVD. What is interesting is that he liked it slightly less on the Blu-ray. The reason was that the special-effects were so detailed you could see what was phony. The flood of ants look very animated. Bob, you can tell when I write this on my iPad because I can't figure out a way to put up pictures.

Saw a bunch of movies over the last few weeks

American Hustle - B+ - hard to figure out who is double crossing who at times but the dresses Amy Adams wears are awesome.

Wolf of Wall Street
- B+ - really over the top at times but still holds your attention for the 3 hours. Jonah Hill cannot pull anything off besides the dumb stoner kid. Parts of this movie reminded me of Leonardo in The Basketball Diaries when he is rolling around on Ludes.

Dallas Buyers Club - B+ - This is a very good movie and subject matter which several people I talked to just did not get. The guy who plays Rayon was Clair Danes boyfriend in the old series "My So Called Life". Unbelievable transformation between Magic Mike and this poor guy.

Last Vegas - B+ - Good non vulgar movie with some great old timers and story. Some very funny scenes and Kevin Kline is good as always.

Rush - A - This is a Ron Howard movie based on the lives of 2 real race drivers and should have been nominated for awards. Good story and filming.

Gravity - C- - This was the worst movie I watched this year and should only have been nominated for Best Panty Shot of a Fake Astronaut. I listened to a Neil deGrasse Tyson interview a few days before watching this and he blew all the science out of the water. There was so many things done wrong. Do female astronauts usually just wear panties and a tank top under the space walking suits? Do any female astronauts who are about to die really care about Cloony's eyes?

Hunger Games 2 - C - This movie did nothing for me but I liked the first one. Hard to follow and not much happening.

12 Years a Slave - A - Chiwetel Ejiofor should have won an award for his part. The girl who won best supporting actress didn't do much at all to win that. Amy Adams in Hustle did a better part. Powerful movie but not much different than other slave movies except for the fact that he got his freedom in the end.

I know there are more I missed and will add when I remember them.

I believe that there are five Mummy movies (I got 3 on Blu) in the series (total), and four Scorpion King flicks (I got 2 on Blu) in total.
I bet that you're referring to the first original Scorpion King flick?

Yeah, the more blurry our visual life is the less flaws we see in it. ...It's the same with our wives or/and girlfriends. ;)

Bob - I think you watch more movies in a week than I do in a year. What's your favorite in the last year?

I respectfully disagree with this review. Of course, it is certainly OK to feel this way…But.
Neil deGrasse Tyson needs to get a life.
