Everything has changed in the last 50 years.
Our lives have changed. See how technology has invaded our kitchens with microwaves, our cars are computerized with GPS devices, beeps and bells. Even my laundry has automatic sensors. And my glasses are unbreakable.
Our morality has changed. How we fight wars have changed. Even how we work has changed.
So why does the Twilight Zone seasons 1-5 not just hold up but still bring shivers down your spine?
Wow, is this blu ray set terrific. First, you get the first “real” twilight zone episode with William Bendix that was an hour long feature introduced not by Rod Serling but Desi Arnez. And it is complete with a “live” commercial with Lucy. There are two “pilot” episodes of “Where is Everybody” with different announcers. A few Twilight Zones were adapted from other TV shows and those original shows are here too….As well as commentaries from stars including Martin Landau. Of course great stars just starting out, Robert Redford, Billy Mumy and Jack Klugman are here too.
Yet I still identify with Burgess Meredith in an episode that doesn’t really make too much sense, yet it is unforgettable. I see our new “machines” and technology like they see their older technology and feel the same distrust. Dennis Hopper shows us that evil still lurks around the corner in 1950 and still today. And you might see some inspirations form movies including Poltergeist.
But, I must say, if we gave awards for the best TV shows ever this would be in my top ten. Few special effects, no reoccurring stars, but great writing, acting, mood and music. The video quality is top notch and so in the audio for the black and white era of it’s origination.
If you have not seen these shows, settle down and watch a couple a night. And when traveling to these unfamiliar parts, it is best to bring your family dog. And least that’s the way it happened, once, in the Twilight Zone.
