What are you watching?

--

A very fine flick, with natural/raw (in the flesh - mind) actor's performances and film direction.
Technically it is different too from your your routinely standard Hollywood's flare.

'King Kong vs Aliens vs Godzilla' vs Bruce Willis' it ain't; it's 'Blue Valentine', and their story through the eyes of someone having a natural vision in a real world, somewhere.

If it was a Tuesday night then it has to be Justified. The same program I have watched in January, February and March for the past few years.

In going through my collection of DVDs I noticed an awful lot of great movies not on Blue Ray: The Black Stallion, All That Jazz, Time Machine, War of teh Worlds, My Bar Mitzvah and, a favorite of mone, Avalon, which I will see again tonight and report on tomorrow

Blu-rays (release date):

- 'The Black Stallion' (1979) -> March 18, 2014
- 'All That Jazz' (1979) -> No release date
- 'The Time Machine' (1960) -> No release date (Big favorite of mine, and I want it on Blu!)
- 'The War of the Worlds' (1953) -> No release date (I want that Blu too!)
- 'My Bar Mitzvah' -> Not in the system yet ... Do you mean: 'Bar Mitzvah Boy' (1976)?
- 'Avalon' (1990) -> No release date

My brother took 8mm movies at my bar mitzvah. We put it on DVDs ten years ago. I need to put it on blu ray:roflmao:

Wow, very interesting that you just mentioned that Barry because when I first searched for it (by putting my goggles on) that was exactly my first find! But I thought to myself; no way, that can't be it! ...So I simply discarded that idea. ...Very true.

Anyway, last night I watched this ::

* One of my very favorite Michael Mann's flicks ('Thief' - 1981). .,.And now for the first time ever on Criterion Blu-ray! :cool:
And it's another Criterion winner, all the way! ...And so much better than my older DVD version.

--

Why did I go there? Because I'm a completist; I got the first two ones, on Blu too.

How was it? It was fine for straight CGI entertainment sake; but no redeeming wisdom value (spiritual).
And technically is was fine too.

* The first original 'Pitch Black's still the best.

I don't know Thief.

Is it worth I watching?

Yes!

One of the great Michael Mann's flicks. Mann always aims for that 'realistic approach' in all his films; he's very meticulous in the most smallest realistic details - his trademark, with his own preferred choice of music - always excellent.
... And this one with Tangerine Dream's musical score. :cool: ...Completely immerses you right from beginning to end.
This is what great films are all about; grab your full attention, and transverse you into a magical musical dimensional dreamscape of the senses. ...Visuals and Sounds (music & spoken words & real sounds of life). ...Just like in the real world.
Your own emotions are the true free leader of your own directions into your own horizon's destiny.

* For me it's a classic. ...And James Caan is superb in it.

I am even amazed that you never saw that flick; but that's ok, better late than never Barry. Go for it, view it and share your overall thoughts afterwards. :)

And I'm going to gamble this with firmness Barry: Get the Criterion Blu-ray version of this flick and with your full blasting first-class Home Theater Krell system you'll be penetrating into a full hypnotic ride. The music here plays an important role, a very important one; and in hi rez multichannel (this one's great too, with very good recording sound quality to it) it's a beautiful ride.

Barry, do you like Tangerine Dream's music?

Anyone saw it here at the aquarium?

Anyway, here's my own renewed polished take:
-> The main actor does a great job to let you in. ...You know which one (on the left).
It's a flick about corruption. ...Corrupted people in power. Without corruption our world would probably cease to exist!
One thing: If you didn't see it (or even if you already did), give it another viewing, because that's truly the only way to be fully integrated in the immersing reality of the story.

No matter what I say is simply not sufficient for this one. It's good for a reality-check. ...Good for the intellect, the brain, the knowledge.
...Makes you appreciate more who you are, and who truly influences us all. ...After all, this is the true world in which we live in, and no matter if we are in agreement or not. ...Me I'm not of course; I can only do what I'm doing now - listen to some tunes by Neil Young, or some Classical music on the r.a.d.i.o., at home (not doing ... radical ... guns ... planet ... mankind ... extinction ...).

Happy viewing. :)

Anyone saw it here at the aquarium?

Bob, I saw this years ago. I remember after watching it that I wasn't sure if I liked it or not. One of those flicks that you had to think about for a couple of days... I'll have to watch it again to remember if I liked it or not.

Yes, it's a 2005 flick.

* Sometimes when I don't know what to watch on Blu-ray, I go through some titles (I take my time) and I pick few that I might enjoy re-watching. ...In the mood to.

'Syriana' was simply one of them. Well made movies are like well made and beautiful classical music recordings; the more you listen (in this case re-watch) the deeper you get into the essence that suits you best.

How many people here at the aquarium, and elsewhere, keep rediscovering the "soul" into their older jazz music collection?
...And so much so that they re-buy the album all over again (45rpm remastered and 200gr by the latest and best cutting facilities).

Well, I'm the same with movies: started with VHS tapes, Betamax, Laserdiscs, DVDs, HD DVDs, and Blu-rays.

Miles Davis - "Kind of Blue" and John Coltrane - "Blue Train"; how many copies (versions and of various sound quality) and from how many audio formats (tape - vinyl - CD - SACD - digital audio file - ...) do you have? See!

'Syriana' is not for everyone at all time; but for me last night it was. ...Nothing grandiose here, or emotionally fulfilling; just the right dose in the arm, at the time of revisiting. ...Try to do that with an ex-girlfriend!

With movies and music we can all go back to our past just like that! ...And in the present too, and even in the future (with psychedelic drugs if we wish to - to help perhaps, or not at all). ...No drugs for me; I quit a long time ago. ...Au naturel maintenant.

* It's been a while that I didn't revisit (or check a new flick) in 3D. ...I can smell that it's coming; February perhaps.

Question is this: How to be sure that we're going to like something or not? We don't, we just go by our best gut wrench (feel of the moment). ...Emotional present state of mind and soul. ...The more we practice the better we get at it. ...And with experience we can fulfill our life with just the right dose of comfort zone. Using all our senses (there are five of them), plus the six & seventh one; coordination and emancipation.

Anyway, it's a good flick and I enjoyed revisiting it. ...Even if it's from 2005 and George is in it with few well known others.
The young writer/director Stephan Gaghan ('Traffic') had a vision, did his homework, and I applaud him for his sharing of it.

Revisited ::

I enjoyed (a lot) revisiting that one too.
Again, great performance by George, and awesome performance from one of my favorite actors, Tom Wilkinson.
Some flicks are simply good to revisit. ...What can I say; it's like putting a John Coltrane's album on your turntable.

I re-watched this last night ::

* There are periods of time in our life when new things are happening every day. ...Good things, and sad things too.
Other periods of time are perfect for renewing older things, and in music as in movies as in other things it works.

That one worked for me last night. ...It's a very good flick (not for everyone, but for someone).
