Well respected speakers that you don't like

I can't believe this thread has 25 pages... ... Just saying...
I think because we are the Mythbusters in the audio world...

Guys,

This was a very interesting and informative discussion. Thanks for both your comments. You both raise some excellent points.

It would also be nice to see some reviews by measurement-taking publications to confirm the idiosyncrasies with this speaker.

I have a pair of Raidho C3.0 and no finance available for upgrade (sure hope Michael still stands on his promise to fix my tweeter for free). I fought with them for almost two years before finding the right ancillaries (Chord SPM 4000) and cables (stranded Siltech) but now I just stand still and enjoy the music! Those Raidhos are by far the best speakers I ever owned: they just make music, no analysis needed! Yes one must invest time and money to make them sing but hey, would you buy a Ferrari and expect it to run "as advertised" with low quality fuel and SH tires? Methink not!
Now I do understand that for some people with seemingly unlimited income (or fraternal relations with the AD's) trying something else is the easiest way out, but for us others owning a Raidho is the end-all of our quest for speakers.

Best regards and a happy New Year
Costin

Costin-Glad you are happy with your C3.0. Did you already replace the tweeter that needs to be fixed or do you currently have a blown tweeter?

mep, my tweeter is "visually impaired" but in no way blown (for music purposes). So the need to change it is more aesthetical than acoustical: let's just blame it on "integrity paranoia", if you wish!

Gotcha.

Costin, Do you happen to know the output impedance on the SPM 4000? I know it is .02 ohms on the SPM 5000 which gives it a decent damping capability. I am guessing the SPM 4000 is close to this figure which when combined with your low inductance/capacitance cables likely explains your success with the Raidhos. Congrats.

I am curious if you intentionally kept your speaker cables short to minimize reduction in amplifier damping?

The answer to your marginally-rhetorical question is "Yes" - I would expect my Ferrari to run at spec when I bought it. If however, it had low grade fuel and SH tires in it, I would have to resolve not to buy any more Ferraris from chop-shops....

Synergy is one thing - complete intolerance for everything except an exceptionally narrow range of gear is another altogether . Life is too short , no matter how great the end-result , to spend "fighting" our gear. I do that all day long in the Investing world, I don't need to continue the bout when I get home & plunk myself down to listen to my music.

Paul, the 4000 is a slightly less powerful version of the 5000 but have the same damping factor. The speaker cables are kept as short as practical (2.0m) but I found no significant difference with 4.0m (the demo cables I tried before purchase). Since my living room (doubling as a listening room) is 25sq.m and 2.7m high I have enough power to never go over 60/98 on my Chord Indigo DAC/preamp.

Bobolaclune, I'm not the gear-switching type of guy: I get my system to "click" then I just listen to music. After all, isn't our hobby about listening? Sorry to say but those switching gear as often as they change underwear do not get it: it's all about music, and "stuff" is only a mean, not a goal by itself. And yes, coming home from work and getting music is all I want, and I got this with my Raidhos. My system just plays music, with no apologies attached...

Still reading this thread. I'll bite.

I don't like the look of Vivid Audio's Giya loudspeakers. The look is a love or hate proposition. Somewhat of a Nautalis look, they remind me of the Blue Diva from The Fifth Element. I have briefly listened to the G3. They didn't captivate me, notwithstanding they were setup in less than ideal surroundings. Technical specifications look impressive.

We concur about the TAD R1. The honest truth is that they don't play YELLO as well as other loudspeakers. The Lady is my blind litmus test. If it can't do YELLO properly, it is not a versatile choice. You should always play YELLO when choosing a loudspeaker even if you do not like CLASSICAL ELECTRONICA POP/ROCK. Boris Blank and Dieter Meier are Motzarts of the 20th century. Oh Yeah...Bomp, Bomp.

My 3rd dislike is Sonus Faber Lilium. They were driven by MC601s. Sounded mechanical, lacked dynamics. Probably all of that metallic ribbing and the glass hat made it sound artificial.

Ok Mep, thats the second time in two days you had me laugh so loud I woke the dog.

Au contraire mon frere!

Oh they get it my friend, believe me they get it. Just cuz you constantly look for a higher mountain doesn't mean you don't like mountain climbing, in fact, IMO it means you lust for it.

+1 even if it did sound well, I just can't make my self like how it looks

Big +1 for hate camp here. I am scared of em.

+1 I especially like your mountain climbing analogy. :D
