Tube amps for Alexia's

I will wait until after CES, but I'm looking for a Classic tube sound. ARC, VTL and others represent the new tube sound.

I may try to hunt down and old VAC 100/100. I did see a pair of VAC PA150 monos floating around. I will call Kevin or Brent and pick their brains on those old amps.

I might take you up on that.

If anyone is in the Florida area this winter, you really must swing by "The Salon" and see John and all his goodies. You will be amazed with the location and his selection of SOTA products like Magico, Raidho, Constellation, Nordost and more.

This might break the budget. The 150w ayon Titan monos

Steve - I heard these at RMAF. Noisy as heck. No thanks.

I'm going to let my friends VAC amps break in a little more - then I'm going back for another audition. I guess I want to like the VAC in the worst way!

Haha I got a buddy who swares by the ayon integrated. I've never heard any of their stuff.
I agree with you. VAC is my favorite among tube amps, if I had the money I'd have a pair.
Never heard the 200's but I'd love to check em out.

I will make a point of it. Thanks.

Mike here is what I know and I hope it helps. I care less for new digital sound, lean, super transparent, electric, etc. I love that old analog sound. So far I have 1100 hours on my preamp, 750 hours on my amp, I have no idea why but they should be the same, and 500 on the REF2S. What I hear now is close to perfect analog sound, really sounds like tube, with that great thing of new sound, tighter bass but analog, mid-range is tube, warm, real, and highs are transparent and lively but with that tube silk sound that mimics the real life sound. I can’t agree that ARC is new sound, perfect tube tonal sound yes.

The new tube sound is striving for neutrality. It was confirmed today when I spoke with Brent from VAC. He said they are aiming for "absolute neutrality". Fair enough. But I'm looking for a stark contrast to solid state. I'm looking for more of a Classic tube sound.

Now, if I was going for one pair of amps to do it all, ARC or VAC might be it (I personally think the D'Agostino amps are the ultimate for the Alexia's.....but I digress).

I'm thinking more like a pair of Mc 275 mk6 or Aesthetix Sig monos. Even the new Zesto amp sounds glorious.

ARC gear is wonderful. No arguments here.

Really...my search is just for a fun little pair of tube amps. Nothing that major like the big boys - ARC or VAC or VTL. Just something fun. If the Carver 180's had XLR connections, I would be done. :)

Tube amps might be out. Many tube amp manufacturers have told me that tube amps won't sound their best with a tough impedance load. Of course you can use them - but they won't sound ideal.

That's a bummer. Time for new speakers I guess! :snicker:
