System Restore and ...?

Eric, your post was edited right in the middle of my response so I lost the quoted text.

Lets just assume Activation is a hypothetical issue and has been resolved.

Next, just because XP is out of support does not mean that you cannot Install, Activate, Service Pack, install All existing Updates

It means they are not going to write any more code fixes for it.

As per Laptop keyboards and touch pads, get a small scale wireless keyboard and mouse, or hook an existing one up to it.

Thanks Brian. I was kind of thinking that, but wasn't sure about the whole activation thing.
I know when I had to re-do my mum's Win 7 PC I went through hell trying to "re-activate" the OS even though it was the same HDD and everything. It finally led me to break down and call Microsoft who surprisingly did not charge me and helped me reactivate it. Turned out to be simple, but I was going down all kinds of complicated roads before that.
I think I forgot to write down what I did though.:(

Yes, Win 7 is the same - requiring a re-do about once a year of your lucky. I've done mine once so far. Seems to be ok still. I do have to clean up the DLLs though, but I'm not sure exactly which ones I can get rid of and which ones I need to keep.

When I am unsure about a specific exe running in processes or listed in startup settings, I google them, same for DLLs. The hit will tell you what software they belong to.

Thanks Brian, I never thought of that for some reason. I may have 100 DLLs or more or less and may take some time, but well worth doing.:)

Bob,

Unfortunately all the old sticks of ram I have will not be compatible with your IBM. I do have old drives and all Operating systems (pre-activated)

Contact me privately from here if you want anything that I can provide.

And install Classic Shell on that new laptop.

Brian

Brian - A pre-activated hard drive will only boot up if the hardware is the same or extremely close (may need additional drivers).

512mb memory is hardly enough to boot XP. 1gb will work much better for what you use the computer for. I have 2gb in mine and it hardly ever peaks past 1gb. I don't use my computer for much either.

Bob - I just saw your post this morning and to me it sounds as if you have some serious malware and or a root kit. They can be fairly tricky to remove and if you follow instructions for someone else s removal you can do even more damage. I'm a hardware guy and have been removing malware/viruses and root-kits for a few years now. I'm a moderator on another forum Tweaks.com (Xti16) but more for hardware. RichieUK is certified in virus and malware removal. He is very clear in his instructions and very patient (unlike me). I would suggest joining and post your problem in the Virus & Malware Removal section.
Virus & Malware Removal
and make sure you follow the read first
READ AND FOLLOW THESE STEPS BEFORE POSTING .
If you look at some of the posts there you'll see RichieUK will have you run many scans and post the results. It can be time consuming so be patient (some scans can run for hours especially on a slow pc that lacks memory and hard drive space).

If you would consider a new pc or laptop HP still offers win7 boxes.

Good luck

George, Thanks, I know what you mean. If you load the i386 directory and download and add the IBM Drivers to the drive, and run a few scripts, you can take an xp drive from one to another. It was a trick I learned in school.

But there is a misunderstanding. I did not intend to load the OS, but I also prefer that anything more be taken private if Bob needs any more help. I'd rather not discuss anymore on Mike's site.

PM or email me for anything further.

Thanks,

Brian

Thx Brian, but that wasn't necessary; most important priority for me is to learn. ...And that, you and Eric provided a lot of it (info we can learn from).

Classic Shell; yeah, thx too.

George, you touched the right button!

And you are right; scans take a very long time on my PC; and I always give up before the end (I stop scanning).

Also, half gig of RAM is sufficient; I know for a fact as I ran my PC for three years with all the speed needed, and even multitasking, and without issues from hi-res pictures and youtube videos. It's only in the last two years that things started slowing down and are now pretty bad.

My patience is usually very good in life; except for exceptional situations. :)

By the way George, I do have a laptop (Intel i5, third generation processor, and with Windows 8.1).

I should have named this thread "System Restore for inexpensive Computers". ...This is not about what's the best PC or Mac in the world.
Remember; I paid $300 for a used PC running Windows XP, just over five years ago. ...And it came with the screen too.
It was very very good for my own limited use, but times have catched with it, and all the baggage that came with it, including all that jazz. :)

I am certain that it is something very simple; I just need the patience to learn all the operations needed to resuscitate a normal life into it, that's all.

I very much appreciate your contribution and info provided with links. :peace:

Why Brian; this thread is in the "Computer/Digital Audio" section of the forums. ...It's not about politics or religions.
And my problems with AUDIO are for real; because the sound keeps breaking down (music tunes, music videos, etc.).

When your computer is running very slow it affects everything; pictures, videos, and AUDIO (sound, music).

Bob, it sounds like it could be serious malware and/or virus issues then based on what you just said. (It's still a fact that your RAM is bottlenecking. Sorry, but it is a fact that XP needs a minimum of 1GB RAM to run well. However, if your ok with the 512MB RAM then fine). The important thing is to run deep scans with the malware and antivirus programs. Let it take all the time it needs even if it's all day! In that way if there is something there the programs will find it and might be able to get rid of it. Stopping them short doesn't do the job because the virus or malware might be in a spot that has not been scanned yet because you stopped it.

I talked with my neighbor earlier; he said to me to run the scanning overnight. ...Great idea; I'll do.

Yes Eric, I am pretty sure too that I got some malware, and perhaps other programs running simultaneously.

And half gig or RAM is enough Eric; no need for 16 Gig. ...I read about it, and for my use it is ok (it was just fine for three years, as I said few times already).
And many smartphones have half gig of RAM and that's just fine. ...Even with Windows (any flavor).

Windows XP doesn't have a minimum requirement for RAM Eric, unless it is something new now. ...For simple people like me 512 MB is enough Eric; I don't do anything strenuous with my PC; mainly one on one communication and few pics here and there and some youtube videos, and emails.

I visit many sites, and I read stuff from many sources. And once in a while you hit some bad apples out there in the cyber world. Even google has some viruses, Yahoo, eBay, Amazon, etc.; ... This is the world we live in. ...Adapt or crack!

And by the way, from my 40 GB hard drive I used half of it; according to the latest stats from my last defrag (couple weeks ago). So no problemo with storage memory. Like I said several times in the past, there is not a single movie in my PC, and there is no music either, and I've never played games (PS3, Nintendo, etc.) of my entire life; I'm just not a gamer, ...I'm a RESEARCHER, a REVELATOR. :)

Oh another thing; my sister (Sophie), about two years ago or so told me to not check my email from my niece as that email was virus infected. And she was categorical about it as other friends got that virus and it screwed their PCs.

I'm not sure that there was an issue on mine from that though; just mentioning. ...Kids nowadays... :)
...Well, she's 35 (my niece Mari-Pier).

Bob, nobody said anything about 16gb of RAM. Look up XP minimum system requirements on the internet. XP just like any other software has minimum and recommended hardware requirements. Did you stop to think why your WIN 8 machine has 2GB? It's just a fact Bob, no need to argue. If your fine with 512MB, then don't worry about it, I already told you.
This is not about games and movies and such. I'm not a gamer either and I don't store movies or music on my PCs. This is about making your system not overtaxed and running the way it should. Minimum requirements only. That's all, no more, no less.
However, that can all be addressed later. First order of business is cleaning that machine of yours.

Yes, that is a very common way viruses are spread. They come from people you know, but not really. It's a rous. Yes, it's really their email that you know and all, but it's not from them. There's usually a link involved and when you click on it, it's good night nurse for your PC.

It sounds like you have a lot of TSR progs running as well and yes, some viruses are TSRs and some are not.
