Starting Point - Bob's new room and Alexia's new home

I often tell people that if I could go back to my 20's, with my 55 year old brain intact, I would be the biggest whore you have ever seen. Most people usually agree with me that that would be their priority too! :celebrate008_2:

Bob, now wouldn't that be a novelty. :woot:

Back to the topic at hand, I'm beginning to interview acoustic consultants, as I've decided while the system can sound pretty good, the room, as is, is never going to let things sound as good as is possible. My wife frowned when I started talking about adding treatments, and said "why don't you just go ahead with the remodel so it will look nice too." Bless her heart.

I expect to remove the two glass doors, possibly angling the wall a little in the corners to incorporate bass traps. The two side walls will be made to be a little more symetrical so I can get gear on one wall, vinyl storage on the other. Instead of built in album drawers I'll have a cabinet made (if we relocate again I want to take it with). I'll move the whole house audio stack to a place upstairs, and ditch the bar, fridge, microwave nonsense. Final design likely to have a home theater look rather than tweaked out audio room, again because we may someday move again. Goal will be 2-channel sound, but I'll wire for 7.1.

If you have done a custom room, I'd be happy to have referrals. And any horror stories too, so I'm not niave.

Bob,

Please check your PM folder. I sent you a PM on this topic earlier this month on March 10th. I did not get a room custom designed but did have Nyal Mellor (Acoustic Frontiers) voice my system recently and the results have been fabulous.

Bob,

A few years ago we constructed a dedicated audio room for a client that was designed by Rives Audio. The results were fantastic and it looked amazing. I believe they are no longer in business but paying an audio consultant is well worth it. Especially if you want a room that is aesthetically pleasing to more than just audio geeks. The room was very detailed with corner bass traps, soffitt traps and
custom ceiling panels. Even the record storage cabinets were built on an angle for acoustic reasons. The amount of detail that Rives designed in the treatments was incredible. Cost was quite high as all the wiring, detailed carpentry and cabinets were done to a high level of finish. Sound quality was incredible. Even just talking quietly in the room you could hear the difference.

Nyal is AMAZING. He gave a presentation to the Suncoast Audiophile society last yet. The guy really knows his stuff. That's who I would use too.

Hi Anshul

Did this include recommended room treatment recommendations and layout or by "voice" do you mean strictly speaker placement?

Keith Yates (Sacramento) and Paul Grimaldi (S.F.) are also widely respected acoustic consultants and designers, although Paul will probably try to sell you some of his proprietary products (MSC).

Good plan, Bob. Recommend ceiling soffitt bass traps if you are going to go through it all. Look very discrete. If I did it again, I'd forgo the diffusers on the front wall (that most former Rives designs had)- they were overpriced for the sonic value. Bass traps, first reflections, and diffusion in the rear- and something on the ceiling if its low. That's the lion share of the work.

You'll laugh at how insignificant things like cables are after you go through it :)

Hi Chris,

Yes, it did include detailed written room treatment recommendations, measurements for the room and the speakers and the speaker placement. I have not yet done any of the room treatments.

Very cool. That's the same service I had signed up for so was curious if the "voicing" was something different.

Damn Rives, when they went OOB they took my deposit.

I expect the design will include bass traps in front corners, like you said some soffitt traps, diffusion at first reflections, rear wall, and ceiling. Depending on products used, hide them behind fabric or make them integral to the design. Lots of great design ideas can be seen on the net, though it should also not be too dissimilar to the the gestalt of our home. The as-built of the house doesn't completely match the blue prints, so there will be some destruction just to see what's inside/behind a couple walls. The final space not likely to be too much smaller, possibly a foot wider. I have 9'7" ceilings currently, so that could drop a little with a big cloud diffusor and still be comfortable.

Exciting, but anxiety provoking as well!

Hi Chris,
I actually had Nyal come over to my place as I was not sure if I could get accurate room measurements for him to look at remotely. The extra expense was totally worth it.

Ah man, we could have split the cost for his airfare. Good thinking though. The costs to deal with the room is better spent than any component purchase so smart move.

I actually had contract Nyal to do remote services with me, but in the end bowed out (not because of anything he did or said, all logistics on my side). He graciously refunded my money in full after many, many months. He also offered to just give me some advice when I finally do start acoustic treatments for my room as well, which I do hope to capitalize on one day. Another nod for Nyal!

Sorry, I did not know you were still looking to have a 2-channel set up; otherwise I would have definitely reached out to you. Actually the air fare was really cheap -- $150 for a return flight from San Francisco.

Good morning everyone,

I was just told about this thread. I hope some of you will be at this coming AXPONA in Chicago. I've started a new business called Resolution Acoustics. I have two rooms as close to identical as possible. I'm using Sonus Faber Stradivari speakers, Pass Labs XA100.5 amps for both rooms. A Pass Labs XP30 will feed the signal to both rooms. Wireworld is kindly supplying all the cables and they will be identical for both rooms as well. The only difference is that one room will be treated and the other room will be left untreated. I have designed all components to work together as a system and some are patent pending. The rooms are adjoining, so with the same source playing the same piece being split at the preamp, you will be able to go between the rooms and clearly hear the huge difference a well done room can make. This is being done without the benefit of any measurements of the room beforehand. I sincerely hope some of you can make it & judge for yourself what you hear.

Bart
