Reviewer Rooms

Btw, my fellow gear reviewer has not started writing yet. He is the one doing in-house demos. And as for as finding it strange that I don't have reference system, that is precisely the point - you are joining a gear search journey that is ending up in-house. The blog right now is just a start of that journey, and was encouraged by those who knew about the search process. Fwiw, my system before of Martin Logan Summits, AR ref gear, Verity leonore, Jadis, and NAT top of the line did not help. Your progress will start after you sell your gear.

And yes I did take the concert potshot at you because you are making incorrect innuendos

I still have vivid memories/observations of calling on Harry Pearson & Gordon Holt for the first time in the '70s - when I worked for ARC. Since they have passed, there's no need to put it all out there. Let's just say that each was an appalling experience for me, as I had followed both of them closely for years... :disbelief:

Yes, those were the days. Are there any reviewer rooms that you would consider to be decent?

Just saw Ken Kessler's room and, even if I take his reviews and OTT prose with much salt, his side and listening side rooms are a study in absorbtion diffusion...

I don't see a single thing wrong with any of the rooms pictured, in the context of any person giving their personal, anecdotal opinion, based on their preferences, on some piece of equipment.
Nobody mentioned writes for any type of scientific, verifiable, objective facts type journal. Many of the "reviews" are of electronics. Aside from loudspeakers, the "room" is largely a red herring.
If the loudspeakers can't be used in such rooms, that's an excuse for lousy design. IMHO, the manufacturers should all make clear how "ideal" a room must be for their amp, cable, dac, loudspeaker, etc to be, for "proper" evaluation. That would prevent buyers from wasting their money on designs inappropriate or hamstrung by their rooms.

cheers,

AJ

Awww C'mon,

Next we will be discussing RT60 time, 2nd reflections , room noise floor , 75 watt under powered reference systems , cable RLC , et al and then , the subjective reviewer's nightmare,

level matching... !!!

Imagine comparing TT , cartridges and phono stages and no level matching :)

Subjective reviews are just that , enjoyable reading with a grain of salt unless one is familiar with the reviewer Biases and experiences , then again , we have audiophiles purchasing 12K phono Cartridges without knowing if the cartridge meets advertised specs or not , no measurements what so ever ....

Then go beserzk if they dont see a diffuser insight .. :)

A local audiophile got his first diffusor last year , one Pr , 6 months later His listening space looks like Diffusor Depot , about 3/4 of all wall space were covered with these diffusors , he told me you cant have enuff , now if he goes anywhere to listen and see no room treatments everything sounds automatically bad ..

You cant make this stuff up ... :roflmao:

They already are on WBF. Go join in the fun if you haven't been banned there. There is a competition for who has the lowest noise floor in their room and the best RT60 time. I'm waiting for someone to beat the lowest current ambient noise level. We need to find someone who has a minus dBa noise level to win.

Please explain how you would "know" if a cartridge meets it's advertised specs. What are the chances of finding someone outside of the manufacturer who actually provided measurements of a cartridge? Oh, and did I miss it, or have you published photos of your listening room and your gear?

Nope no Ban , you ...? ? :)

A few decades back , before you became an audiophile, clipping expert and later , reviewer extraordinaire , they used to test phono cartridges, TT's , well practically everything before the dumbing down. Personally I would not be purchasing a 12K cartridge without measurements and if i wanted , i could measure it myself , as i currently do to my little stock pile ..

BTW Manufacturers dont provide measurements they provide advertising data ... :)

Have you tested your past reference amp on the NOLA's yet, i bet that Phase Linear sounds good on them...

Regards...

Mark, are you and Myles sneaking peaks at WBF these days ;)

World Boxing Federation is a total train wreck. There must be some sort of legal clause in the sales contract that prevents the former part owner from being banned so he's like herpes and won't go away. The new part owner came on the scene years after World Boxing Federation came on line and through a bit of revisionist history, he is now listed as a "founding member." Threads are constantly being locked, reopened, and locked. So yeah, I saw where people are now vying for who has the lowest ambient noise floor in their rooms.

I'm running triple stacked Bose 901's powered by a Crest 10001 , kinda like the NOLA's before the NOLA's, but with enuff power so no clipped dynamics, the crest is 10000 watts ...

I face them with reflecting drivers forward and at 45 deg inside to listening position , very live sounding , musicians love them ...

Hope this qualifies me to post my opinion ... :)

For me, it's not so much about the reviewers rooms (although set-ups like Kesslers are "special"). It's about what they do with the room.

I've yet to hear any reviewer's system that couldn't be dramatically improved with a bit of effort (if they knew what to do).

To be fair, I have never heard any system, anywhere - no matter the claims for it - that couldn't be improved similarly.

How do you take measurements on a phono cartridge? Don't the turntable, arm and pre-amp all significantly affect the (eventual) electrical signal? And is anyone still making a "reference" test LP?

So modest,

Cant believe you are not taking credit for the carnage left behind from you and the other musketeers ...

Not trying to start a food fight, but it would be interesting for you to visit Mike Lavigne and Steve Williams, perhaps Philip O'Hanlon as well?

Perhaps so. I should have been more clear.

I keep thinking that I will run into such a system. Just because - out of maybe 1500 systems - I haven't heard one that comes close, that doesn't mean that there are not some well set-up systems out there. I simply have never encountered one.

I could say more, but there's no need to encourage the food fights already ongoing in this thread...

Yes, yes and yes ......

I use an oscilloscope and i have test records , you can still purchase these today , the last one i bought about a yr ago for by Brother was warped , so i had to flatten it .

You can use the Ultimate Analogue Test LP and RTA software and this is a good read ....
