On the 12th Day of Christmas my true love gave to me...

Madfloyd, This is precisely the quote that caught my attention in the review. IMO, that would be a very good thing, as I have always found MIT lacking in those areas. The other thing is that in my experience, MIT cables play with phase and those different "poles of articulation" settings radically alter the sense of space, tonality and imaging. So as far as "recording space" goes, with the top MIT cables, it can be what ever you want it to be. Quite an effect, IMO. I preferred the lowest setting in all of my MIT speaker cable auditions.

"Body, tonal balance, soul, musicality," all of those things can be adjusted through careful speaker and seating positions, in my experience.

Sorry, back to the M Project topic....

Peter, them's fightin' words! I totally disagree with the notion that MIT 'plays with phase'. Unless I misunderstand the poles of articulation tech, all the switch is doing it connecting/disconnecting more poles that are articulated for high frequencies, allowing you to tune it to your taste. More high frequencies affect the perception of sound stage. It's no more an 'effect' than Transparent cables boosting the midrange at the expense of frequency extremes.

Ian,

I'd love to hear your M Project speakers with some nice Conrad Johnson gear. Could be amazing!

Perhaps they're fighting words, and I'm sure MIT's marketing arm describes something different. But when I demoed them at a dealership, the salesman said that rotating the switch would "wrap the sound" around the room. And guess what, that is what I heard. Same effect in my own room with the model that you currently own. The increased "resolution" setting expanded or bent the soundstage around the room. The lowest setting sounded the most natural and least manipulated to me.

I also don't happen to think that Transparent boosts the midrange, but this is a long and tried discussion between MIT and Transparent owners.

We all have our preferences and much of this is system dependent.

Michael, long time no see! I have S5s now, too, and am drooling over the gorgeous M Projects of Ian's!!

Allen:

Congratulations on the S5s!! I'm pretty happy with my pair. But these babies will test that fidelity. I've declined an in-home audition of them because I'm afraid to write that check. On looks alone they kill it.

Looking forward to more.

Ian,

Congrats on what certainly appears to be a great selection! I've voiced various Magicos, but have no experience with these, except for the discussions we've all read. Can't wait to hear more from you as time goes by!

Best,

Jim

Ian,

I see the speakers are now spiked, did you or your dealer do the positioning?

I so much prefer the feet on the M-series and S3 to what they did with the S5s! So much easier to level. I'm sure they were thinking the S5 looked cleaner with the feet hidden but....

Love the photo with the curious cat. It is clear from the pictures that your listening room is very comfortable and well used by the family and friends rather than an isolated chamber for solo listening. The speakers really look great. I look forward to hearing them again once they are fully broken in and in their final positions.

Thanks for posting those sweet pics Ian. Seriously drool worthy. As I looked at all the pictures of your M Projects, the word that kept coming to mind is, "flawless". THAT is what a SOTA speaker looks like. Can't wait to hear them.

One of the things I love about the design of the M Project is where they placed the midrange driver. This will help elevate vocals which is something I focus on when evaluating speakers. Are vocals at the proper height? Singers don't sing from their knees or sitting on the floor.

Well, that's the difference between Magico's brilliant designs and the wanna be's.

Never heard of them. Giant killers or just a boutique Giant? I already gave up a car to get these speakers, not much $ for cables. In fact, I'm now using Mogami (not kidding).

Bring them in February! :)

Could you make do with a 2 meter length? :(

Congratulation Ian, these are simply stunning. Please post more impressions, as you listen.

Hi Ian,

I was never a huge Magico fan but these speakers are one of the most beautifully designed that I've ever seen. And I bet they sound even better than they look. Magico has hit a home run with this design. I am rethinking my position. Please continue to post your impressions of the sound as they break in.

Best,
Ken

Ian, your system setup is the mirror opposite of mine. My left S5 is 3 feet from the wall, while the right S5 opens into the kitchen/dining room. At first I was a little concerned that this would give me unbalanced sound, but it turns out that isn't an issue. Sitting in the center the sound appears to be equal from each speaker. To be honest, this seems to be even better after getting the left cross-over fixed. Now both speakers appear seamless and equal. While I would love to have the M series, I need to stay with the S5s for another year or two. My thinking now is to replace the wimpy stock spikes with some Mapleshade brass spikes, which will elevate the mid-range a couple of inches. I suspect this will improve the sound, at least for me. I prefer the mid-range at ear level versus the tweeter.

+1. Very interested to get some feedback on this. Many thanks.
