On the 12th Day of Christmas my true love gave to me...

Great update Mark! You've already provided much better services than Ian's previous (Wilson) dealer. How did the Pass gear sound with the big M's?

He is . He's the BEST MAN in this business you could ask for. :)

The way he described the sound of M projects last night in person. I really like to hear them. Do I ever get a chance ? I doubt it ......

Hi Mike,
Are you thinking about how your XS components would sound with the M Projects? :exciting:

Ken

I sure do! I bet they would be off the charts good. But I won't be moving from my Strads any time soon. I've had a lot of speakers in my (problematic) room and none sound better than the Strads. In fact, I will go so far as to say that my Strads sound better in my problematic room than my two local friends who have Strads in ideal dedicated rooms. I can't explain it, but they do.

That being said, I would love to try those Big M's in my room.....or maybe I don't! :exciting:

LOL Mike. The Strads are perfect for your upstairs room, don't ever change them, they are an all-time classic loudspeaker. Of course, if you have some room downstairs....

Best,
Ken

I have my eye on something else for down there. :)

Thanks for the kind words Paul.

Ian,

I am so happy for you. They must be amazing speakers and a stunning system. Mark's wonderful service is worth every penny. Congratulations.

Are there any plans to change amps/preamp? Just curious because I love my XA60.5's but wonder what the .8 or higher Pass gear brings to the table.

There are no immediate plans, but I admit to being very curious about it. I had previously tried the XS pre but it was a tonal change that I wasn't prepared for - especially given that I knew I had the M Projects on the way and so I held off. I'd love to hear that again - perhaps even with the XS-150's but my current budget doesn't make that easy.

I'd also LOVE LOVE LOVE to hear the Soulution gear - or even Constellation. And of course Mark's Tenors.

But my first step is going to be bypassing my Equi=tech transformers that feed balanced power to my listening room (will require an electrician). While my sound is very clean, I feel there's a 'hardness' in the upper mids that I'd love to tame. This has been around for the last 4 pairs of speakers and various cabling so it's either something in my room, the Pass electronics or power related.

Ian, The Tenor sounds marvelous with Magico ( I heard several times with Q3 and S3 myself ) . If you can try them on yours I would highly recommended.

Ian, thinking about the "hardness in the upper mids", I think the issue could be your digital setup. I would suggest trying the Lumin A1 (of course) :) or the PS Audio DirectStream DAC with an Auralic Aries. I think Mark has the DS/Auralic combo. Both the Lumin and DS are buttery smooth in the upper mids IMO.

Before you disconnect the Equi=tech, try an Entreq Grounding box.

You also might want to try some SHAKTI products. I recommend the EMI cancelling " BRICKS" that need to be placed on top of components, near the power supply/transformer area. I would start with a minimum of three to see how they work out for you. Place one on each mono block, and one on top of the preamp . If your preamp is a two box affair, place the brick on the power supply unit. These units, at least in my system, seem to provide for "quieter, darker backgrounds" along with a smoothing effect. The resultant sound is just, for lack of a better word, more relaxed. They help to reduce the EMI fields that surround electrical devices. Not terribly expensive either. About 500.00 for three units. Music direct carries them, I believe.

CHEERS.............T

I disconnected all my power distribution products ran 3 20 amp dedicated circuits, 4 outlets for digital, 4 for amps, and 4 outlets for analog stuff. Best sound and the lowest noise I have ever had. Another plus is the main power panel is less than 15 feet away.

For digital, I would suggest either the Shunyata Hydra DPC-6 power conditioner, or add Sigma Digital (or Alpha Digital) powers cords to each digital component. The problem with digital gear is the power supply generates noise that is reflected back onto the power lines, and it negatively affects other gear. Actually, all power supplies do this, but digital seems a bit worse. When I added an Alpha Digital to my Bryston BDP-1 my jaw dropped at the lowered noise and increased clarity.

Shunyata Research - HYDRA DPC-6

I have an Alpha Digital and I'm working on getting a Sigma Digital. I have a love/hate relationship with Shunyata. I use their power cables but the Typhon hardens the sound in my system.

Incidentally the issue is not restricted to digital. I get it on a lot of vinyl too (including the latest Beatles mono LPs... ouch!). It could be source related - as in both my sources being subpar, it wouldn't be the biggest coincidence I've ever experienced. My XP-25 is definitely what I would consider noisy.

To be honest, when I added a Typhon to my Triton it wasn't an obvious improvement, but it certainly wasn't worse. On the other hand, when I stopped plugging my amps directly into the wall (dedicated 20 amp line for each), and added a Cyclops for each amp, it really cleaned up the sound, and opened it up. Of course, if you try the Cyclops you also need to get two 20 amp power cords, I am using Zitron Anacondas. I was thinking of upgrading to Sigma HC, but I am very happy with the system now, and feel like padding my savings account for a while. :)

Your results seem to run counter to others in many areas.

I have 3 Typhons and cannot for the life of me see where they "harden" anything. Quite the contrary. Second, I'm getting rid of my XP25. It has many shortcomings but I would never classify it as noisy. And finally, never, ever would I put the XP30 in the same league with the Xs Preamp in any facet of music reproduction. My opinion only but I can't see how anyone would prefer the XP30 over the Xs.

Hi Frank,

Some might prefer the warmth of the XP-30 compared to the neutrality of the XS-Pre, even though the XS-Pre is more transparent and detailed. Just a thought, I could be wrong.

Best,
Ken
