New Magico speakers arriving 04/2015!

The May/June issue of The Absolute Sound arrived today, and on page 3 is a full page picture of the S7 in blue. Looks much better than seeing it on a tablet or computer.

Hi Ken,

Thanks for asking. As a matter of fact, I think I have found the culprit. The short story is that my amps were starved for power (under spec'd isolation transformer feeding my amp outlets).

I'm now using heavy duty 10 gauge extension cords so that I can plug my amps into different outlets until I get an electrician over and the difference is not subtle. Lots of bass/body/meat-on-the-bones with a more normal tonal balance now!

That's wonderful news, Ian! That could certainly cause the problem. The XA-160.8's require a lot of current, even at idle. I bet you can't wait to get a bigger transformer in there to solve the problem. The extension cord bypass was an excellent idea. Will you get a bigger Equitech transformer or will you go with one of the Torus units? Please let us know how things progress.

Best of luck,
Ken

Sorry gents about jumping off topic. Back to our regular scheduled programming. :)

Wow- I think we need to over-analyze every detail of the speaker nobody has heard even more :)

Not every detail Keith, just some of the ones noticeable in the photos and evident in the trickle down from the M Project, which happens to be the best speaker I have ever heard. Impossible to over-analyze something like this.

Now what I'm really wondering is why the demarkation between the tweet/mid unit and the three woofers. Is the top module removable? It looks to be cosmetic only and simply an indication that there are separate internal isolation chambers, but it is hard to tell from the photos.

Glad you are enjoying the thread. Do you have anything else to add?

I wonder if the demarcation can provide a grip when trying to handle it? The S5 at 200 pounds is hard enough to handle. At 300 pounds, I can't imagine easily moving it.

Don't think anyone has posted this yet (from TAS). Amazing price :(

April 9, 2015 - HAYWARD, CA – Magico, the leader in high performance loudspeaker design and manufacture, is pleased to announce a new addition to the award winning S-Series line – the S7.

The S7 is a full range, 3-way design, floor standing loudspeaker that incorporates new tweeter, midrange and bass driver designs which are derived from the engineering triumphs in the MProject loudspeaker.

Towering over other S-Series models, the acoustic suspension enclosure of the S7 features curved aluminum side panels that are machined in-house from half-inch thick aluminum extrusions which are sixteen-inches in diameter. Internal bracing is carefully positioned throughout the enclosure to minimize resonances and create an ideal operating environment.

The S7 houses three new 10-inch bass drivers that have extremely powerful magnets and ultrastiff aluminum cones which are capable of producing deep powerful bass frequencies with speed and accuracy. The excursion rate of the voice coil is measured at 15-mm linear movement and produces clean and undistorted sound pressure levels up to 120dB @ 50Hz / 1-meter.

The midrange driver (6-inch) in the S7 brings a new benchmark of measured performance to Magico. The cone material is formulated using Arkema Multi-Wall carbon nanotube and XG Sciences C-750 Nanographene which combined is 20% lighter and 300% stiffer than previous cone material designs. The underhung neodymium base motor system uses two extra-large magnets which provide an ultra-stabilized magnetic field for the pure titanium voice coil to operate within. The driver operates in a purpose built sub-enclosure made of a proprietary polymer material that was first introduced in the S3.

The S7 incorporates a new (1-inch) tweeter that features a diamond-coated beryllium diaphragm with optimized geometry, created using state-of-the-art Finite Element analysis modeling tools. This purpose built tweeter has extra-long excursion movement and uses a neodymium based motor system that is customized to match the sensitivity and power handling capabilities of the S7 while maintaining ultra-wide dispersion characteristics and ultra-low distortion measurements.

All five drivers in the S7 are acoustically integrated using Magico’s exclusive Elliptical Symmetry Crossover topology that includes state-of-the-art components from Mundorf of Germany.

Mike,

I wonder how close they are to the M-Project in performance?

I'd be surprised if they are there Mike since the Q7 Mk II are already confirmed to be at Axpona. I don't have any inside information though. I guess it's possible.

Somewhere I read the Q7 mkIIs were going to be there, through a dealer I think. I certainly hope so, would love to hear them.:audiophile:

Q7s will definitely be there with Aesthetix Atlas Signature Monos, Pass XS pre and Clearaudio Statement table.

The Q7's deserve better amps than that. I guess the Dealer couldn't get the XS mono's delivered in time..

Actually the Aesthetix are darn good amps. They have sounded wonderful on numerous speakers including the Focals and Vandy 5 and 7s. They actually might be a perfect match in fact.

Myles, I don't necessarily disagree with you. I just think the best dynamic speakers in the world deserve the best amps. In this case, Pass XS-150 monos would make more sense for synergy, or a full suite of Vitus Masterpiece series amps ;).
