My New Lumin

The time from order to aquisition is about 3 weeks.the build quality is 5-star.Ken also provides an upgraded umbilical cord that is silver and said to be much better then the stock cord..i purposely did not install that last night but will tonight. as some members obviously don't like to read how i think the new PSU sounds i will limit my descriptions. does it sound better..?..yes it does..hope the building is not too high....

Please discuss the sonic differences with the new power supply, don't let Jim bother you !!

I see from the Lumin picture there are two digital outputs. Has anybody tried using the Lumin with an external DAC?

I ask for two reasons. One, I do not like being locked into a vendors DAC. This is why I will not buy the new Sony High-Res file players. Having the ability to upgrade components is the whole point of seperates. Second, I am looking at the Lumin because Bryston is delaying adding the ability to play DSD files to their BDP-1/2 file players. I just replaced my Bryston BDA-2 DAC with an Auralic Vega, and the Vega's ability to decode DSD was one reason.

To be honest, I suspect the Bryston BDP file player is better than the Lumin because it only plays files, and does not have a DAC, but, even so, if they do not add DSD then it will have to go.

I've been a bit lazy as I don't want to screw with what's working at the moment, Lumin A1, as my sole source (it sounded better, to my ears, than my Aurender S10 and emm DAC2X), but I will try the Lumin into my DAC2X just to satisfy my curiosity - is it the DAC, the steaming, or a necessary combination of the two. Nothing has really answered that question to my satisfaction.

I'm sure it will work, but you never know how much engineering they put into that circuitry. I wish manufacturers would also offer a product that just plays files, and let's the customer deal with the DAC.

Hi psme,

I have a problem after I upgraded to release 5.0.
After installation everything works fine for a while, till I decide to reload music library( I'm using minimserver latest version) Lumin app start crashing.
App works if I choosing Twonky, but if I want to select Minim, the app start to loading music library and crashing.
I'm using Ipad 4 with latest iOS.

I'm not sure if this problem was touched only me, but I suggest for everyone not to reload music library if Minimserver is in use at least till psme will not confirm or not this issue.

You mean such as Aurender, SOtM or Antipodes music servers? Or the SOtM SMs-100 that just streams from your network to your DAC and is quite affordable?

Since I have a Bryston file player, that is my example of how this should be done. There is nothing wrong with offering an integrated file player and DAC for those who want convenience, but there should also be a single purpose file player optimized for just playing files offered for those who want the best.

Edit: Disregard this, and I apologize for the side-track.

Thanks Mike,

In general it is related not to the firmware 5.0 of Lumin A1, but with the Lumin software app. ver.2.0.4.
I read about the same problem on other forums I think it was something missed in general during upgrade.
Hope they will solve this quickly as always.

Interesting. Thanks for sharing. I'm sure they will get it fixed soon.

If you want a file player that does DSD, take a look at the Auraliti PK90.

That is what you get with MDMS (Sooloos). You have three choices: 1) use the DAC in the unit 2) output to the DAC of your choice 3) output to a MDMS endpoint with a ID40 or ID41 card.

Thanks Mike...The Lumin specs look slick!! I must consider this against my current WIP. I already have a commissioned Synology 1513+ fully loaded with 4TB Seagate Constellations, a structured network with smart switching that I pulled from a data centre. CAT6 in wall & Molex 6a patch leads ready to go for this sort of thing. WiFi & iPads too. :D

Been working on a CAPS quiet PC (better than Zuma spec & with EM shielding). It just needs an SSD to get going & I was thinking of hanging this off the McIntosh MCD1100 USB port. But I've been dragging my feet on this project & not sure if I want to make it a permanent addition to the system.

Thought about Aurender for awhile but some of the feedback was disconcerting. A good CAPs build apparently gives Aurender a run for its money.

Now a black Lumin & those Wolfson DACs that do DSD have my attention.....

Steve - I had a CAPS 3.0 and various DACS including Emm Labs DAC2X and Meitner MA-1. The Lumin is head and shoulders above them all. So much more musical and organic sounding, plus no computer BS - except for the initial CD rip or high res download.

Darius - I played with it this morning and DSD files are giving me the same issue as you. They won't play with this new update. I've taken a video of the problem (the app just skips over DSD files) and sent it to Lumin. I'm sure they are aware of it and already working on a solution. I'll keep everyone posted if I hear anything. For now, enjoying red book and PCM! :)

Darius - here is what Li said:

"Looks like the usual "IP address changed problem". When a song is added to the playlist, the server IP address (at that moment) of that song is included. Later, if the server IP address is changed (maybe due to NAS off/on, server restarted etc), the item in the playlist becomes invalid and won't play anymore.

Solution:

- remove the old item on the playlist, and add the song from the library to the playlist again (which will use the current correct server IP address)

- configure your server with a static IP address"

Darius - I stopped and started MiniMServer, reloaded the library, cleared my playlist, added DSD files and it worked perfectly.

Hi Mike,

What version of the app you have?

I think Li described your problem with skipped DSD files cased by different IP address.

Mine is different, because app is crashing when trying to read/load the library from the Minimserver, with twonky it works fine.
