My New Lumin

This was while I was using Magnepan 20.7 speakers & Sanders Magtech mono amps. I think we forget at times that sometimes things are very system specific & would sound totally different "even, just" in another room! Another thought too is that with that system we were splitting hairs really, as all was revealed. Quite the "neutral" system with Wire World Platinum cables.

Agree, bzr. Any insight on the sonic characters of Lumin in that system?

I very distinctly remember thinking out of the 3 it was the most laid back in terms of delivery. It wasn't in your face front row instant "pow", also the tone was more to the warm side as in the opposite of neutral & uber revealing, but, with the detail still there. Maybe that is what the difference in preference was on the day as at the time I was chasing the holy grail of the 3D's, detail, definition & delivery. Now I have come to my senses & strive for the 3M's, much more musicality.... ;)

Back to the Lumin Kev! I owned the EMMLabs DAC2X and Meitner MA-1, both were very digital sounding IMO. I had the Lumin A1 and MA-1 at the same time for the longest time. I had a CAPS 3.0 with my MA-1. Didn't help. Lumin was just so much more analog sounding, will less fussing too and no damn Windows or Mac computer involved either.

Mike, i know you are a stalwart for Lumin & am not knocking the gear as I did like the sound but found the bass just a touch wooly by memory. For me & what i want, it's the all in one solution that i want & a macbook & the MA-1 do it, not saying they are the best, but average out to be sufficient as far as digital goes.
For an experiment I have got a macbook with no hdd & only ssd to feed the whole thing in my next step in digital. No NAS, no external hdd, just ssd.
The dac merry go round for me is over as I find them mostly a pile of junk that really should be $600 bucks for a dozen.
For me to put a turntable into my system & realise I have indeed come back to the finish, pun intended, for me , is a revelatory moment that carries more weight than any latest greatest whiz bang digital. Wine, the lights low & cruising with the AMG12 & Soulution, mmm mmmm.

SSD or regular drive matters very little IMO. The A1 is more analog sounding, the S1 likely would have been more to your liking IMO. I tell people all the time, the S1 is not better than the A1, it's different and very system dependent.

I might be a stalwart for the Lumin, but I've had more DAC's than most members on this forum (23 and counting). I've been on the DAC merry go round and still like to try out the latest flavor of the month DAC just to make sure what I'm hearing with the Lumin remains excellent (and it does).

As for vinyl, no arguments here.

now there is an area I have found to matter. we all hear different things though.

"Hi Mike,

We are working on Tidal (and other online streaming) integration since we are back from CES. We hope to release it in 3 months.

Li On

Fantastic news Mike! Yet another very compelling reason to get a Lumin... :celebrate008_2:

I'm looking forward to that update !
That's another great thing about my Lumin, the app tells me when an update is available and then I just tap yes, and let Lumin take care of it.

Kev, the Lumin S1 and A1 ARE truly system dependent. When I owned my Raidho D3's, the S1 was clearly better with less and tighter bass. When I bought Salon 2's again, the A1 was clearly superior, with a more analog sound, and more bass.
And then there's the difference cables make between the Lumin and the preamp, which is to say "A Lot" I've experimented with lots of cables, and for some reason, the cable between my Lumin and my pre makes the biggest difference of any in my system.

Totally agree.

Am I correct to understand that the LUMIN need a WIRED ethernet to be able to communicate with the iPAD application ?

So... how can I use a LUMIN if i do not have a Wired ethernet (only Wifi) in my listening room ??

You really need to run a cable from your router that the wifi is coming from and plug into the Lumin.

Mark, What cable between the Lumin and pre have you found to work really well? I'm currently using a Shindo cable which is silver.

As a DIY hobbiest working on my second DIY DAC, and a third in the wings, I would find the Lumin restrictive to my hobby. I have a turntable in my system, so a preamp is needed. I don't care to have volume control on my DACs.

OTOH, if I wanted to fit a nice digital solution into a system, or create a music server direct to amp system, it would be my choice.

I am not sure about the Lumin but I can tell you that on my Linn it is a choice whether you want variable software by control app or not, and if you want it you can choose the highest output level. Some purists told me not to use it as it negatively influences the sound quality but I have to say that I do not notice this. I preset the pre-amp volume to the level where I usually listen music. This way I can comfortably reduce the level if I want to with the same app that I use for the music selection.
I don't think this internal volume works with an external DAC though.
