Magico S3 mk2

S3 mk2's performing incredibly well in the 14 x 18 room with Ayre.

That combo looks awesome Mike [emoji3].

Yep really like the s3. Unless your room is huge I don't see the point in going any higher.
Sweet spot of magico I reckon

I agree, the S3 Mk2 would pressurize anything up to my split level/atrium room, where you might start thinking of a larger Magico model. Saving that, you would never be left wanting with that loudspeaker. I agree with Kuoppis, it is really good straight out of the box..especially that diamond-coated BE tweeter .

We have a lot of new S3 mk2 owners.

Would love to hear some updates!

I sure love mine.

The eagle has landed! :yahoo1: My mcast pewter S3Mk2´s arrived yesterday and today I have spent the better part of the day positioning them. Needless to say I love them! They are some heavy dudes with their spikes piercing thru my easy sliding coasters lol. Now the break-in process begins but I’m going to enjoy the journey!
Thanks Mike for the great service and selection help!

Outstanding Larry! Fantastic speakers. I'm glad the delivery didn't interfere with the renovations. Keep playing them. Some Daft Punk works well on the woofers.

hey mike,

any thoughts on an s3 mk2 vs s5 mk2 in a smaller room? i know magicos work great in lots of smaller rooms because of the sealed cabinet...but how small is too small? the new s5's midrange and internal enclosure are really enticing

Skandia, the midrange enclosure (pioneered in the original S3) and the midrange driver are present on both speakers. What are the dimensions of your room?

It all comes down to room size and budget of course. S5 Mk2 will play in a larger room obviously. 21 x 25, no problem. The S3 mk2 plays great in 17 x 25 down to 14 x 18 that I’ve tried.

My room is 16x18 (or thereabouts). I play hard rock and bass-heavy electronica at quite loud volumes, and my only concern is that my Devialet 220 does not deliver enough current to make my S3 mk2s perform to their capability. So I am going to upgrade my amp. I have absolutely no concerns that with a more powerful amp my Magicos will more than fill up my room with amazing sound.

Thanks for the welcome! I've been lurking here for a couple years now. I've voraciously read EVERY thread on Raidho (currently own the c1.1), magico s3mk2, and m3. Call me obsessive :)

I use a maxed out odyssey kismet in a stratos case for my amp, my dac (exclusively listen to digital now) is a chord qbd76hdsd, and my pre...well, i just sold my arc ls17se and am using my old fostex hpa-8 as my pre. it's playing nice and has got me thinking about the esoteric c03x - so this will be sorted out in some months.

I live in NYC so space is at a premium. The audio rig has been integrated into my living room which is a long rectangle. In order to make the integration i moved my speakers to the long wall...if we we were to draw a box around the listening area it would be 12wx12lx9h the whole room however is 14wx21lx9. the c1.1's play really nice, i even get bass down to 30hz in my room. i have a node at about 50hz but luckily not too much music excites that...if anything i think it will be more manageable with a magico sealed enclosure and general lack of midbass hump. no knock on raidho - just how it's voiced. i've never owned a floor stander/full range before and while i want to avoid the folly of too big a speaker for a room, i would really like to have a fullish range speaker. maybe i'll find the monitor approach better but seems like magicos are relatively easy to resell - maybe a shark will take it off my hands if it doesn't work out.

GSOphile, agreed re enclosure and driver, but isn't the m3 and s5mk2 the same driver? if i have that mistaken and the s3mk2 is in the same boat then i'm in on the s3 all the way.

A few months ago i listened to the m3 and s3mk2 at goodwin's in waltham mass (i'm from cambridge area so i go back and forth frequently). the m3's were in their main room. beautiful sound - there was a wonderful mix of resolution and treble saturation. the s3mk2 was in the smaller room and i actually left after about 15 minutes. it sounded thin in comparison. i know there were too many variable changes but after listening to the m3 for an hour i was a bit emotionally wiped :). leaving that demo, i thought my c1.1 was more impressive in terms of treble saturation etc than the s3mk2 but the m3 bested the raidho sound on all fronts. i am vaguely considering a d3.1 but the dynamics in the magico sound really caught my ear. still love raidho, but i think magico bests them in dynamics.

sorry for the super long post - excited to be here! and i look forward to being a more active member on this forum :)

Skanda,
Elbereth is our resident expert on Magico drivers (and certainly other audiophile topics), and as an S5 Mk II owner who upgraded to the M3, perhaps he can advise.

You are right, it’s the S3 mk2 which has the all-graphene configuration, like the M3.

AJR, you planning to go the D-route (Pro 440 or 1000) or something else altogether?

Hi Walesi,

I need more juice. I probably should give the Devialet Pro 440 a go and I might, but I listened to the Gryphon Diablo 120 and it sounded so much better than my Devialet 220 that I ruled out Devialet and instead wanting Class A/B - Diablo 300 or Pass INT-250.
