Magico S3 mk2

Yep, Mike has the best toys! The tube combo really has a different flavor with the S3Mk2 compared to my Pass Int-60.
The bass is amazing....really tightned up. The Int-60 has a pre-amp output for a second amplifier. The original intent was to use it with the VT80 amp just for a flavor variation. But the combo did not sound good. Or maybe it was because the LS28 with the VT80 sounded so much better. Decisions decisions.

anybody have an comparisons of spod vs without spod? im thinking of buying without an spod to start....

I think kzhtoo has SPODs on the S3 mk1’s and quite likes the effect. I do have the S3 mk2’s without and am quite happy as it is.

I am at the 250 hour mark breaking in my S3Mk2 and they are sounding great.
It was well worth the price of admission to the club. I hope I can find a Magico dealer nearby  that can let me try the spods and see if they make a difference on my tile over concrete slab floor but I’m waiting till I get 500 hours on them before I try any tweaking. No Mike, not yet:roflmao:

thanks for the feedback!

wow, larry - you put 250hours on those bad boys real fast! great listening sessions no doubt

I had ordered Spods, but my dealer let me cancel the deal when I bought Constellation Pictor and Taurus. Maybee I will buy them next year when my finances have improved a little. The feedback from those who bought them is clear enough.

They bring an enhanced level of refinement to a speaker which is already refined...where you might have detected by touch a hint of resonance in the enclosure that is now gone...when you hear something new buried in a well worn favourite CD that tells you SPOD because nothing else has changed in the room or installation. Think of it as almost worthy of a Mk2 upgrade badge on a Mk1 speaker. But the overhaul impression is one of being impressed without the need to think too hard as to why.

Interesting, thanks.

Except in case of the S3 mk2 at least the gen 1/ gen 2 change is nothing like you describe. It is an entirely new speaker with new drivers, crossover, enclosure, internal brackets, damping, footers, different woofer size, broader frequency range and an additional 10kg in weight. The change is not subtle at all, so it is quite a different speaker and sound signature.

I understand all that. But Magico never did a Q3 Mk2 upgrade so you're just left to wonder how close SPOD might get you towards something that might have been but never was.

Fair enough. There might be other models where the model change had lesser impact.

What I do notice with these Q3 on SPOD. Where without them you'd hear a backing vocals layered in the back of a principal artist's performance, and just leave it at that. When you put the Q3 on SPOD you now notice, hey, there are two separate female voices making up those backing vocals. It is revealing the infinitesimally small which might have once been missed. Think of it as a Mk2 upgrade but on a micro scale, perhaps the opposite of a S3 Mk2 upgrade on a macro scale.

That is impressive, they seem to make a significant difference with a speaker as good as the Q3.

Thank you for the detailed description,

It's time, Kuoppis. The system you have, esp. now with Nyquist, no reason not to elevate it another notch. :D

Yeah right - you’re killing me.

But I agree, the Nyquist is a big step. However, the next one after that would be a new cart. And I am actually happy with the S3 mk2s and do not wish any change.

Last time I tried footers, I ended up removing them. And it would be difficult to put SPODs under other components [emoji3].

The SPOD's are definitely worth it. But what cart are you thinking about? I love the Transfiguration Proteus (after 200 hours of break in). The A95 is another stellar performer.

I think the Proteus and A95 are two good candidates on my short list, along with the Ortofon PW ti and the Transfiguration Phoenix S. Lyra Etna is another one, but it is rather pricey.
