Magico S3 mk2

New S3 mk2 review in Hi-Fi+ 01/2018 issue.

In my view it reads a bit unexcited, kind of been there and done that. And it is a bit sloppy what comes to actually describing the sound: no mention of the change in bass texture, no mention about the coherence, no description of the diamond coating changing the tweeter sound quite significantly. Also, I think Alan is pretty much misreading the market in the sense that I was probably not the only one thinking that the mk2 upgrade was released too soon.

In a nutshell, I’ve read much better reviews from Alan. Can’t avoid the impression that he’d rather done the review of the almost double the price YG instead (in the same issue).

Kuoppis,
I thought this was a good positive review. Alan gave a few new (to me) technical details on the speaker's construction, and he described the sound in a way that was different from most speaker reviews, yet, IMO, quite accurate.

I agree, it was definitely not a negative review. Maybe I am too critical having been admiring Alan’s talent for several years already.

But for me personally there were no news in it, as I studied the S3 mk2 extensively before buying it. Key consideration at that point in time was of course whether it would be worth an upgrade from the S3 to the S3 mk2. I also think his nonchalance regarding the upgrade cycle is a bit manufacturer colored and does not reflect what people spending their hard-earned $$ really think. At this point I of course hope there is a lightning fast upgrade cycle for the M3, so I can buy Mike’s demo pair for ridiculously low amount of money when he has to upgrade to the M3 mk2 [emoji3].

Having been listening to the S3 mk1 and mk2 in my system for an extended period of time I also feel the sound difference is greater than what is portrayed in the review.

Alan Sircom reviews have been templated for some time now. I don’t think the products he writes about have anything to do with it (they are all "good", and you can read them anyway you like). He is burnt, not much passion left in his writing. Just trying to make a living, I suppose...

Not sure I would dismiss Alan Sircom’s reviews completely just yet. I have also read some good recent reviews he’s written. Of course his role as Hi-Fi+ editor takes away some hours from the reviewing business.

But on the S3 mk2 review I do agree, he at least can do better.

+1. I don't understand any criticism of this review. It was VERY positive and if Alan didn't mention something that some people wanted mentioned, it really doesn't change the fact this is a very good review.

He didn't say better he said he "preferred" it. Different voicings, different listeners, different results. It's why they make multiple series.

Also as this was a "Product Rollout" event for the A3 with the intent to draw interest and orders the dealer would have given it the "preferred" spot in the room along with the best match of gear and cables.

Then, shouldn't it be "preferred the system with A3 over the system with S3" (not preferred A3 over S3)?

And I think multiple series means more for different price points than different voicings/listeners.

Maybe but I think his focus was to report on hearing the speakers and maybe he will say more later. As to the different series while there are different price points for them there is also some overlap. The different cabinet compositions along with different drivers and crossovers would however result in different voicings which many here have attested to. As the drivers and the A and S series are different with required crossover changes they would have different voicings if placed in the same cabinet from either series.

There's no overlap with S series and A series. At least for now.

And couldn't be but you understand my point about different drivers, crossovers and cabinet structure resulting in different voicing regardless of pricing points. So not interested in a semantics battle like a couple of the regular Magico defenders like to play. We all hear what we hear and like what we like.

Not everything is about different people hear differently. There's no way A3 is a better speaker than S3 mk2 or be preferred (without any personal agenda) if all equipments and cables are the same.
