Lumin Network Audiophile Music Player

I have seen my Lumin skip the first track of an album while it "wakes" but I also don't beleive there's a performance loss associated with distance. My NAS is in the next room and my switch is located two floors above my listening room (80+' of in-wall cabling). The length of run should really not come into play with a gigabit connection.
 
today i got the Lumin , very nice build quality!

i'm still need the computer for downloaded HD movies , Pandora , TV shows , Youtube , etc.
it will be waste of money to use the Luxman DA-06 for that.

i thought to buy a receiver for that , i'm not sure how i should plug it to the system
or
buy a simple DAC and plug it to the computer
this one for example cost $500:

they have so many models
i tried to look on the spec what model support UPNP , can't find

i don't need a lot of space , my music files around 400GB
 
As MinimServer is recommended for UPnP serving, make sure your NAS is going to support that.

LUMIN doesn't have any requirements from the NAS other than running MinimServer.

Any UPnP AV media server should do. I tried successfully with Synology media server, although I finally preferred MinimServer for its features, such as transcoding (flac to wav).
 
bought the DS214+ and pair of WD red model
[h=1][/h]install everything

but i'm not sure i how i should transfer all my music files to the DS214+
i checked inside the Lumin box or DS214+ , there is no user guide.

maybe i need to plug the DS214+ to my computer first? not sure how to plug it to the computer

Read the DS214 manual or call Synology. You need to install the apps on you PC.

While the Lumin is a very nice sounding server it does not transcend the Bel Canto stack and certainly is not better than a dCS Puccini (at least in this system). SETUP:
Many people have already spoken about the setup. I recommend that you find a good IT guy to help you if you are not good with computers and network setup. It was a bugger and I had an ex-Boeing IT guy to install it. The problem is not technically with the Lumin but with the setup of the network disk server. We used a QNAP which worked fine once everything was installed correctly. Technical support from Lumin is first rate (in US). They are very helpful and friendly people.

OPERATION:
The app is one of the best I have used. Very easy to use. Playback is almost instantaneous (less than a second). I have not found any clicks or inter-track noises or other anomalies even when playing DSD files. A suggestion would be for Lumin to provide a good app that tags the music files and handles cover art. This is especially a problem with DSD (.dff) files.

UPGRADE: The Kenneth Lau power supply
This power supply is a definite upgrade to the standard Lumin power supply. It substantially improves dynamic contrast and reduces opacity. It cleans up the bass significantly and improves pace, rhythm and timing. I did not hear any downside to vocals or anything else for that matter. All positives and worth the price. If you are looking to replace a top transport and DAC you will want this power supply.

The new chip is only to satisfy those buyers who want Double DSD. It is overall, a step down in sonic quality according to Lumin, but it does provide the ability to play Double DSD files (if that's what you want).

So... 4 year after release, the A1 is still their best Music player ? Quite an embarrassing situation for their development team !

Re upgrade: I know The Kenneth Lau power supply, but...has someone tested the LUMIN with a High power battery supply system, like RedWineAudio "Black Lighting". This should provide a totally clean & "noise free" curent to the Lunin !

The Lumin A1 was released in December 2012. It's barely a year old.

Given that they will have several new models out this year, I think it's a nice achievement for their development team. The new top of the line model (S1) features a SABRE chip, which my understanding is one of only a handful of chips natively capable of Double DSD. The A1 features the more musical Wolfson chip.

If double DSD is your thing, then go for the S1. If not, the A1 will be the choice.

Until the S1 is released later this year, there won't be any head to head battles. Who knows, in many systems, listeners may prefer the S1.

I don't know of anyone who has tried a battery PS on their Lumin.
