JOB 225 2-channel Power Amplifier ... update ...

Ugh... 100 more pages to read... Just quickly though, is this thing still the bees knees?

Welcome to the forum sl33py, thank you for joining.

Short answer to your question, yes it is the bee's knees. System dependant of course.

If paired either with a DAC/Pre or dedicated Preamp with appropriate gain and speakers "in it's comfort zone" it is an excellent amp. If not, then not so much. I have had one for a little over two years now.

JOB sports a very high 35 dB gain, which also makes it a good candidate for those who might prefer using passive preamplifiers
Would passive preamp be a better soultion for 225 than active preamp?

Depends on the rest of your system... speaker gain, component impedances, cable lengths, etc.

I'm using a Modwright preamp with a Job 225 and did find that I had too much gain in my system (speakers are low 90's efficient). I added an attenuator at the amp inputs - LDR based - to reduce the signal and am VERY pleased with how things are sounding. The attenuator was only going to be a temporary solution until I determined the best path forward, but things are sounding so good right now I'm just leaving it as is.

I agree with the previous comments - in the right system, the Job 225 is an amazing amp.

I ordered a JOB 225 yesterday. I wish it was easier to find out when it was being shipped, etc. I talked to support at Goldmund USA and he gave me an e-mail address. He said that he did not have a phone number but he did say that the amps are built in the Goldmund factory and express shipped from Goldmund in Switzerland to the US market.

Most of us got them in much less than a week. They will e-mail you the tracking number. Are you going to run it from the Teac?

Job/Goldmund do not mess around. You'll get it in short order.

Finally finished reading this thread! Whew!

Thanks for the welcome. My situation: I have the following:
- nos dac (tako ebi2 if curious). That stays no matter what, very detailed but quite balanced (maybe 3% on the lean/bright side)
- nad T742 receiver (meh)
- paradigm monitor 3v3 (bit woolly, bit harsh at times)
- A/D/S CMs (great, but I need a more full sound down low so I don't use them)

I want to do a BIG upgrade in the future and I'm a fan of giant killer/crazy value for money gear.
I'm considering a job amp of some sort but am up in the air about speaker choice. My worst nightmare is a system that has me turning down due to fatigue. I hate it. I don't want to warm up the sound with tubes (don't want tubes in my system).
I've open to moving to floor standers and have been reading about the Goldenear Triton Three.
Any thoughts how today combo might go? Or other recommendations. Also, there's a job 225 and pre for 3300AUD in perfect condition atm (I'm Aussie) but I simply don't have the money at the moment, which sucks!

Thanks for the ease of worry guys.... I am going to run it from the McIntosh pre-amp outs. At some point I might sell the MXA70 with the McIntosh speakers and get a McIntosh D150 per-amp DAC. At that point I would probably also sell the Teac :).... but who knows, we will see :)....

Finally finished reading this thread! Whew!
I know that "Whew!" ;) I felt like it when I discovered and read this whole thread, more than a year ago... and still haven't decided what to buy, 225 or INT, waiting for the full 6moons review. Welcome

Randy

You need to get the gain figure for the preamp outs from Mc. If it is to high you will have little adjustment with the volume control, though that will be helped some by the LS-50's low efficiency. If the Teac has preamp function that may be the better sound option.

The Teac volume control is only for the headphones.... also the McIntosh has their best headphone amplifier section in it... so for now still want to try using it...

Not sure what the pre-amp rating to be looking for. This was in the owners manual: Preamplifier Output (for rated input) 3V (8V Maximun).

I would just e-mail them and see what they say. If the preamp section is SS then noise won't be as much of a factor as in a higher gain tube preamp, but if it is fairly high it will just limit the total travel you can use in the volume control and make small volume adjustments difficult. Don't get me wrong I really like the sound of my 225, but it is not just a plug and play amp due to it's very high input sensitivity. When considering it you have to, unlike many amps, consider the whole of the system. It is reputed to sound great with the KEF's. Something I used that I know works great with it is the Nuprime DAC-10. I have the unit without the headphone amp, but the one with is the one TAS reviewed.
