JOB 225 2-channel Power Amplifier ... update ...

123,

No one is saying it's broke. There are some mods one can do to push this guy a lot father than What's possible in stock mode. Yes I will call it the Super Job 425. I guess it will go off the Rick S guy and let him have a go at it. Will report the end result when it gets back.

Oh and by the way now that my Bel Canto 500M amps are sold the 225 destroyed the 500M. Made it sound fake. I owe Joe an organic cookie for his praise of the 225! :)

Seriously, why would you want to risk voiding the warranty and possibly causing the amp to become unstable, with unauthorized mods? Why not enjoy it for what it really is... an outrageously good amp at an "insane" price! The Job has many years of R&D behind it and it is a well thought out design and I would be highly suspicious of someone claiming to be able to "improve" it ,while still maintaing the basic character and functionality of the amp.

If you are anxious to bring improvements, why not try a different power cord and/or interconnects. Or, install a dedicated line? In fact, I just did all three this week and my system has never sounded so good! If you feed" the Job good clean power and have decent cabling, it will easily perform levels above what you currently have. I"m just sayin!

BTW, you said that your fuse blew? It would blow if you used a fast blow fuse instead of a slo-blow, which is the recommended fuse type.

Ha!

I'll take it. Thank you for that. I know everyone's taste in gear is different, but I would never recommend anything that I did not believe in 100%. In the first few minutes of powering my first Job amp up, I knew it was a winner. I've had some great gear but NOTHING really satisfies like my Job. Thank you all for bringing this back on topic.

ps Keith/Bandor, truth will eventually always come out. Have faith and keep plugging away.

I know some discussion had been had around the power cable for the JOB. I just love the sweet cord! I want to get a couple for my other amps and stuff.

LoL

Join the line! Its a May thing.

What diff PCs and interconnects did you try and which proved best?

It was a SLOW blow fuse.

Don't care about the warranty of a $1.7K amp. The mods are well thought out by Modder Rick S on his site.

Have very great cables and the killer SweetCable AC cable and dedicated lines with a great passive conditioner.

It must sound great then. Seriously, the JOB amp which is a red-headed step-child from Goldmund has received tons of good press on forums. Because of the price, it seems people feel compelled to make it 'better' by changing fuses, power cords, or sending it off to Tommy Ten Thumbs the hot-rod modder to let him 'have a go at it' as the Brits would say. Let's say the JOB came dressed up in fancy sheet metal and cost $20k but sounded the same because the circuit remained unchanged. Would people still feel compelled to 'improve' it? Outside of changing power cords and fuses, I seriously doubt it.

So I get your approval to change out fuse/AC cables for improved sound and nothing else? Can I upgrade the cheap binding posts or is that to much like Tommy Ten Thumbs the hot-rod modder? How about changing out the IEC? To much Tommy?

I think Tommy 10 is a great idea to take a great amp and make it greater without taking the foundation of the amp and mucking it up.

Oh, you don't need my approval for anything you want to do so let's set that aside. I personally have never bought an aftermarket fuse and have no desire to do so. If you think that changing out the IEC connector and the binding posts will improve your sound, go for it. Even if they don't change the sound one bit it might look cooler and you will feel better knowing that you got rid of those cheap parts and the electrons will flow better both into and out of your amp.

My only point I was trying to make previously is that some people feel compelled to mod this amp because it is cheap. It's not that the amp doesn't sound great stock from the box and using the upgraded power cord that JOB sells for it. If I bought a JOB and wanted to improve it, the first thing I would do is take a gander at the PCB and look at all of the missing parts while taking a gander at the Goldmund version which has all of the parts. Having those missing parts installed on the PCB might actually really improve the sound.

So when the Job 250 Mk2 comes out with the mods I want to do with it there will be no one complaining about Tommy 10 having a go at it!

What diff PCs and interconnects did you try and which proved best?

I started with an Electrocable B-7 power cord, then a Cerious Technologies Liquid Ceramic cord and now a recently acquired Cerious Technologies Nano Reference cord. This is the best of ones I have had and I will be hanging on to it for a while. It's also a "steal" at $149 on AG. I also just picked up a set of Audience Au24 SE ICs to run from my W4Sound pre to the Job. (Another deal on AG) They are replacing Grover Huffman ZX cables and so far I am impressed... faster, more "texture" and more emotional impact.

Ok Mep you are not a Walmart guy:)

I agree with Joe that the Stock Job is on par with up to $10K selling amps. When looking at $20K amps you don't find cheap A$$ posts / connectors. I do think it can be "upgraded" to the $15K / $20K sounding amps! Having had $20K amps most of the $$$ spent goes to the air and should be priced at a much lower price as is the Job's asking price. ASR $30K Tenor $20K and the Job 225 $1.7K. Ha the Job is steal and can play with these over priced monsters if worked on a little.

Having the SilverSmith Palladium ribbon SC's and talking to Jeffery Smith about the hardwire approach I think it will be a great upgrade to do a direct hit from the internal wire straight to the ribbons.

Thanks again to all those who have taken the time to write up positive reviews of this glorious sounding amp.

Dont mess with the sweetcord or you may mess up the AC curator. DONT try to hardwire it as it may backfire.

Changing binding posts and IEC is OK.

Nope. Not even close. I hate WalMart and I gladly pay more money for the privilege of not shopping there. Why anyone would pay good money to go to a freak show is beyond me when you can go to WalMart for free.

I finally heard the amp and its every bit as good everyone testified. We listened only at low volume, as we started at 9pm or so and the associated equipment was just a KEF iQ10 b/shelf speaker and a NAD CD player and preamp. Stock power cable and very ordinary interconnects and speaker cables.

The amp was taken directly from an unopened box, so cold, no break-in whatsoever.

The amp sounded very clean and very powerful. Pity the speakers were bass challenged, as we could not really hear the full impact of the amp's bass grip. HF was very extended and clear as mountain air.

My friend was really impressed with how clean and natural it sounded in comparison to his Vincent Hybrid Tube/SS Class A amp. I think he may be hit with upgradeitis!
