Cables are not about cost but about matching!
In my all-Chord Electronics system, switching from stranded to solid core power cables (same brand, same material, "higher-end" models) did not improve the sound: actually, they ruined it - just seems that solid-core and SMPS do not match!
I would never mix'n'match cables: just stay with the same brand and try full looms of cable.
Also, "digital" cables do not carry 1s and 0s, they carry an analogue signal, and the most important change in the sound of my system came when I switched from a "decent" S/PDIF to a Siltech Golden Ridge digital cable.
Yes, there is a law of diminshing returns but if you spent $$,$$$ on gear it would be just foolish to not spend an additional 10% for decent cables! After all, retrieving most of the information from the media and treating it "decently" downstream also means the links need to not mess with it!
