All right, let's see if this works:
A waste of what?
A waste of time. To judge the validity of a person's comments by the stature of his gear???? C'mon. Would a person with ultra expensive gear have more validity to his comments than a person with budget gear???? I don't think so. You judge a person by what he or she is not by what they own. If I owned nothing, my comments would be just as valid as someone who has the best.

I think this is the key. All systems fall well short of reproducing live music (despite the hyperbole often read in audio reviews), and we all have different priorites for the audio cues that remind us most of live music. Someone whose reference is (for example) an acoustic guitar or a baby grand piano they play or hear on a daily basis can appropriately criticize anyone's system, regardless of what they themselves own. Even so, their comments and opinions might not match the equally well-informed opinions of someone else.“You are not entitled to your opinion. You are entitled to your informed opinion. No one is entitled to be ignorant.”

... no I don't, again, you've misread with the wrong intent! re-read what i wrote, it was an intention at poking fun at myself as I have recognised a less than desired human trait in myself. Just thought others may want to enjoy themselves too... ah well... I'm outa hereA waste of time. To judge the validity of a person's comments by the stature of his gear???? C'mon. For me, it all boils down to these three categories: Experience. Knowledge. Humility.
This thread has no validity whatsoever!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No more comments from me. Adios Folks.
mep said:Remember, we are talking about passing judgement on gear and recordings, not judging someone's value as a human. So now I will list one example of why the statement I bolded above is wrong. So someone comments that preamp "X" has no deep bass. You have heard preamp "X" in your system and you know it has deep bass. You look at their equipment list and see they own a pair of mini-monitors that have no bass below 60Hz and no subs. Now you know this person can't possibly hear deep bass with those speakers and they really aren't in a position to pass judgement on a component's deep bass capability when their system is incapable of playing back the FR the gear in question is capable of.
I am with TOOBs on this one. Strikes me as shallow and uninformed.Bob...my goodness; why does it have you sooo worked up? I think mep got it just right:
To reiterate...I don't think anyone is saying judge a person, by their gear; maybe just their perspective...their approach.
And even in the example mep gave: about deep bass, and his being able to ascertain the guy's probably not really in a position to comment. I don't think anyone is suggesting, you would say to such a person "your gear sucks...so you don't know what you're talking about"; not on this forum anyway
Just that you might silently take that guy's advice, with a grain of salt; knowing...his gear, or sensibilities...don't quite match yours.
How can that bother you so much?

I personally get access to listen to gear FAAAR in excess of anything I would ever own, so owning and knowing can have ZERO relationship whatsoever. And before you mention it, i am not talking about show conditions, I am talking about manufactueres dedicated demo rooms that they spend corporate kinda money optimizing…I also have pals with wickedly expensive gear.
