GigaFoil v4 Inline Ethernet Filter

If Mike has it that way (and I think not) he would have no logic at all.
The filter must be the last link in the chain before the MSB, to eliminate all (or as many as possible) the artifacts originated by NAS, Nucleus, Router, Switch .....

The filter is the last step. Wall outlet —> GigaFoil —-> DAC

Not the way I understand it. His gigafoil feeds the wall outlet that then feeds his router and switch.

No. The GigaFoil is only feeding the S2.

For anyone interested in improving their ethernet signal, you might keep an eye on the upcoming UpTone Audio "Ether Regen" Switch under development.

It will be interesting to see if it is more (or less) effective than the Gigafoil.

[h=3]EtherREGEN: Early general details [Please don't ask too many questions yet!][/h]About a week ago I [foolishly] leaked word that UpTone is hard at work on a 6-port Ethernet switch--for release this summer. Unlike current audiophile Ethernet switch offerings, our piece will not be a modification of an off-the-shelf device. Rather...

Well, I did not want to say anything because it is a GigaFoil thread, but it is my hope for a few months, a switch not modified from a commercial model, if not designed from scratch to have as little noise as possible. If, when available, it does not meet expectations (as it happens with my EMO EN70HD) I will try the GigaFoil.

Sorry, if I stepped on the thread! The Gigafoil definitely sounds like a good one.

Hi.
I am an absolute believer in the benefits that for digital reproduction has the decrease of "digital noise" that I always translate as hardness in the highs, uneasiness in listening, in short "digitalitis".

For this I start by the kitchen where the fiber optic cable of my internet company arrives. Both the fiber-to-copper converter devices and the Router placed by "Movistar" are powered by an LPSU from Kenneth Lau that is connected to the wall with a Shunyata Alfa NR cable. In turn, both the fiber-to-copper converter and the Router have an RJ45 Entreq Apollo Infinity cable that goes to two Entreq Silver Minimus. The Ethernet connection between both devices is with an AudioQuest Cinnamon cable.

Now from the Router comes another Cinquemon Audioquest cable that goes through the wall that separates them, arrives at the Aqvox Switch that is in my Rack in the living room. This Aqvox is powered by another LPSU from Kenneth Lau that connects to my Denali 6000T with another Shunyata Alfa NR cable. Also the Aqvox is connected to an Entreq box, but now to an Olympus Minimus and with an Olympus Infinity cable.

All this explanation is to make see the importance that I give to this topic.
Has the sound improved with all this effort ?, oh no doubt yes.
Has all the noise gone? oh no doubt no.
How do I know? easy, while I'm playing music from my Melco, I go to the kitchen and disconnect the cable that connects the Router with the Aqvox, the sound improves instantly (naturally I stop being able to handle the Melco from my Ipad and I can not play from Qobuz).

In an attempt to improve the elimination of "noise" I bought an EMO EN70HD network filter highly recommended by some users, (it does not work as Gigafoil with optical isolation). I put it between the Aqvox and the Melco and it actually decreased the digital noise, but unfortunately it took more things than the noise. The sound became flat, harmonics were lost, in short the music lost life.

I would like to address those who have already tried the Gigafoil with an LPSU. Note that the music is maintained with all its attributes, really nothing is lost? (apart from noise).

I think that since the "bit is bit" and "Ethernet has Galvanic isolation and packet transmission, with the wrong ones, so it does not matter what the ethernet cable is used" we have advanced a lot in the knowledge of ethernet problems for music.
The industry knows this and if it is not Gigafoil or EtherRegen, they will continue to investigate until the elimination (or almost) of this problem is achieved.
Just remember the long road traveled between the first digital sound when the CD came out and the digital sound we enjoy today.

Hi Francisco,

I’ve been using the GigaFoilv4 Filter for several months with an IFI power supply upgrade from the stock power supply. I have experienced no change in the timbres whatsoever. What I do hear is more detail and nuance coming from a more silent background, greater ease in the presentation and improved imaging. I have experienced no trade offs or downsides. I will eventually look into getting one of the higher end linear power supplies when Mike has completed his research and makes a recommendation.

I disagree that it doesn’t matter what Ethernet cable is used after the Filter to the DAC. I experienced a substantial improvement in sound quality when I went to a higher graded and better shielded cable. Once the noise has been eliminated by the Filter, it needs to be kept out of the signal path until it reaches the DAC. The cheaper cable sounded like it let some noise back in.

Best,
Ken

Maybe I did not express myself well, I firmly believe that it does matter. In my previous post what I meant to say is that I did not agree with the "technicians" who pontificate on the futility of changing a generic Cat 5 by an Ethernet cable "audiophile".
In fact I had AQ Diamond which is a very, very good between Aqvox and Melco and I changed it for a Göbel cable that is quite more expensive after a comparison in my house.
I asked the importer by phone (he is a friend) how about the Göbel cables ?, his answer was to be presented the following weekend in my house with an Ethernet and two XLR. My poor bank account! With friends like that, who wants enemies.

Francisco,

Thanks for the clarification. What specifically do you prefer about the Gobel Ethernet cable over the AudioQuest Diamond Ethernet cable?

Best,
Ken

If I had to summarize it with a word, this would be "refinement". For example, it is not that the Göbel extends more than AQ, but it does so in a more "natural" and silky way.
The bass is more complete than with AQ and in the media, the female voices are wonderful.
Four times better, not clear but we already know in certain levels what the improvements cost.
Regards

Now if you could get your hands on a Ethernet Analyzer you could really test the device.

I have some doubts with that. I think those analyzers are more concerned with correct transmission of the 0 and 1 bits from a context of electrical compliance and network protocols, but the aspects that affect audio SQ is not about the 0 and 1s, such as ground loop caused by shielding.

My GigaFOIL v4 arrived earlier this morning. After letting the GigaFoil get to room temperature for a couple of hours I pulled the AQ Diamond Ethernet cable that arrived Monday and I had breaking in elsewhere in my network. I inserted the GigaFoil and Diamond cable just before my dCS Upsampler. I am only about an hour into my listening session and far I can say that I like what I am hearing very much.

Since I am dealing with network devices (Orbi router, sonicTransporter, GigaFoil and Upsampler) it would be difficult to A/B the product as I seem to need to cycle all of the devices to get a stable connection. This takes too much time and my SQ memory is too short for a good A/B. My initial impression is that both the GigaFOIL and Diamond cable are staying in the loop.

I may even pick up one additional AQ Diamond cable. As I mentioned I had been "breaking in" the Diamond cable by inserting it between my sonicTransporter and the switch that sit is a closet upstairs. I told Mike I wasn't sure but I believed that in itself had improved the overall SQ. So besides having a Diamond cable just prior to the Upsampler I might put one back between my Roon device and the switch.

I'll keep you posed as time passes.

Congrats Jim. Keep us posted. I’ve selected Keces Power Supplies to offer to customers and pair with the GigaFoil V4 and Roon Nucleus.

Mike
I will let you know when/if I am ready for the Keces unit and another AQ Diamond. Thanks.

PM me more info on the linear power supply when you get time.

Wow! I have seen the photos of the LPSU Keces, and they look extraordinary. I did not know them.

Hey Jim, what are you hearing, or not hearing with the GigaFoil?

It is hard to describe. There just seems to be less of something around all of the notes. Call it less crud that you didn't know was there or a bit more silence. Vocals and music seem to be clearer. I am only a few hours into listening but so far so good.

Mine arrived last night. Use it with Keces LPS from the get go. Very positive initial impression. Smoother but more dynamics and music just flows with a ton of sweetness while keeping the same tonal balance. Today I will change the Ethernet cable between router and device to AQ Vodka. AQ Diamond is already between device and DAC.

But the thing is so fugly, I didn’t show it to my wife which I normally do with every new piece of equipment.
